Hacienda De La Tortuga / Akumal:

The Riviera Maya is without doubt the most important tourist destination in Mexico: its diversity of attractions, the mysticism of the Maya culture, beaches and jungles as well as the exceptional quality of its services have made it a favorite for world travelers. The Riviera Maya is synonymous with paradise, and that's where we invite you to discover its best kept secret: Akumal. (Ocean Magazine).

Akumal, Place of Turtles in Mayan, is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, just 37 km south of Playa del Carmen and 27 km north of Tulum.

Things to do:
Akumal is a water-lovers' paradise on the beach in front of the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. Akumal itself is a small but thriving beach community situated on 2 beautiful bays - our condo is on the Half Moon bay which is picturesque, quiet and romantic. You can spend a whole vacation right on Half Moon bay without leaving the area, with a beautiful beach and wonderful little restaurants in walking distance. Akumal has its own small supermarkets, boutiques and several dive shops, one of them just a short walk from Hacienda de la Tortuga, and water sports facilities. Right in the area of Akumal is great snorkeling, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing.
The condo is in walking distance of Yalku Lagoon which is a natural lagoon formation with crystal clear water -- a unique swimming and snorkeling experience. Several world famous Riviera Maya attractions are close by including the Xel Ha (15 minutes ) and Xcaret adventure parks, the towns of Playa del Carmen (1/2 hr), Tulum and Puerto Aventuras (20 min) and of course the renowned Maya archeological sites of Tulum (20 min), Coba (1 hour) and Chichen Itza (2 hrs)- plus many more Maya attractions are close by.
Akumal in the Mayan language means ‘The Place of the Turtles” - sea turtles can be seen year round and their nesting season starts in May, during the months of July and August you can observe turtles nesting and baby turtles hatching. Nightly 'turtle walks' are available and can be arranged with the Akumal Ecological Center.
Akumal has several shops for water-sports including open water diving, cenote/cavern diving (for which the area is world famous), snorkeling/catamaran trips, fishing and more. They all rent equipment and all have certified guides.
Bicycles and golf carts are available for rental. Yoga classes and Spa services are available in the main beach area (1/2 mile from Hacienda de la Tortuga).

Extras:
For special occasions (such as your honeymoon) we do offer a package that includes chilled Champagne (Prosecco), Flowers and fresh fruit in your suite ready upon your arrival. (Surcharge is 600 pesos (which approx $50) – please email to order).

How to get around:
Akumal is a small relaxed beach community, a car is nice to go out to our many nearby activities but not necessary if you just want to kick back and explore Akumal. In that case there are bikes for rent (approx $5 per day) or golf carts (about $40 per day).

How to get there:
Guests should fly in to Cancun International Airport which is approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes from Akumal by modern highway. The most popular methods of reaching Akumal are rental car, private airport shuttle or taxi. Public Bus transport is also available.

We are happy to arrange a private shuttle for our guests, please email :from the form for reservations ($90 one way / $180 round trip) Your driver will meet you outside of the Cancun International arrivals hall with a sign with your name.

Perfectly situated on the Akumal coast for the best views and snorkel. Well maintained full apartment with everything you need. Daily full cleaning service with friendly staff. Great food and fantastic drinks at the on site restaurant with indoor and out door seating. Clean pool. The king size bed in apartment 9 gave me the best night’s sleep I ever had! Breakfast café/bakery right across the street is over the top with quality and selection. Full kitchen in the apartment when wanting to stay in. Visit the pueblo across the highway for fresh fruit and authentic local cuisine. I cannot imagine staying anywhere else.

Wish I could have stayed forever!
This was my favorite lodging of the entire trip! Everything was clean and comfortable. They changed our water bottle before it even ran low and we loved the restaurant in the building. In fact, we dined there every lunch and supper during our stay. The view was spectacular as were the local activities. We will be back.

Right on the BEACH!
We loved our stay at Cherri's 1 bdrm condo on Half Moon Bay. It was exactly as described in her listing. The propery manager was super helpful and Teresa our housekeeper was excellent in keeping our condo in perfect order. We especially loved being right over the beach with a perfect view of the bay and hearing the relaxing sound of the waves coming in. There was everything we needed in the well stocked kitchen and it was a great location about mid-point within the bay so it was easy to get to restraunts. La Lunita is just downstairs and they offer an excellent menu for lunch & dinner. Cherri provided contact info for an excellent transportation service from the CUN airport which we also booked for our return trip back. I would recommend looking into renting a golf cart to make it even easier to get around Akumal if you don't want to walk or rent a bicycle. There are a couple of golf cart rental services to choose from. Overall, I highly recommend this property!

The sound of the waves
This is a lovely little home for a single traveller. The kitchen had everything you could need and the welcome gift of coffee, milk and soft drinks was such a nice touch. Windows through the living room and bedroom allow such a beautiful breeze that with the help of ceiling fans I hardly used the AC. Best of all is the wonderful view and sounds of the water! Love it❤️

Great trip!
This was our second time staying at Hacienda de la Tortuga! The condo is simple but had all the necessary amenities we needed. The only small things we noticed were that the hammock on the balcony had a strange odor so we didn't utilize it too much. Also, the wi-fi was extremely spotty. This normally doesn't concern us as we spend most of our time out and about, however, this was our first vacation being away from our new baby so we were trying to stay in communication more frequently. Other than that, the space was lovely!

Far exceeded expectations!
We've only been back for four days and I already want to return. I absolutely LOVED the balcony - watching the sun rise with a cup of coffee, swinging in the hammock, watching/listening to the waves, seeing the absolutely brilliant stars in the sky at night! 1. The place was perfect in EVERY way! 2. Prior to coming, I thought there were windows only on one side of the unit. To discover windows also in the bedroom, on two walls (including a tiny patio/patio door), was just fabulous. The cross ventilation for the entire unit was wonderful. There is also a small window in the bathroom. We did not use the A/C, though I would imagine it being necessary in the coming months. We loved having the breeze and being able to hear the waves. The entire unit is just lovely. 3. Housekeeping was great but really no need for it every day, especially for just two people. 4. The beach is gorgeous and quiet. So relaxing to take a book there and read and people watch. 5. The bed is EXTREMELY comfortable! 6. Safe - we assumed the lock was broken. We were not told when checking in that we had to ask for it. (We didn't feel we needed it anyway.) 7. In the past, we have stayed at Akumal Caribe. This was our first time at HMB. We would come back here in a heartbeat! A great place to recharge our batteries. 8. Restaurants nearby - Of course, La Buena Vida - always fun. La Lunita is fabulous. We had several meals at Que Onda (had not been there before). Really good food, and service; and just a short stroll. And Yal-ku has a restaurant, also great food and cerveza! THANK YOU CHERRI, for everything.

Fun times
My husband and I stayed in condo #8 for 10 days and saw turtles in the bay from the awesome balcony. We were fortunate to see them twice. The condo is great and very comfortable. If you stay here don’t miss out seeing the Coati’s across the street in the jungle, so cute! I enjoyed snorkeling in my own aquarium every day! The ONLY reason I didn’t give 5 stars is I just turned 60 and the stairs got to be a bit much especially with groceries. But I know that’s just Mexico so I toughed it out🐢. Great little town and beautiful beaches! Thanks Cherri for allowing us to enjoy your little piece of paradise!

Quick getaway to Akumal
What a great condo right on the beach of Half Moon Bay! We arrived in Cancun around 4pm, so by the time we got the rental car (at Easy Way Rental Car-Great company!), and made our way down the freeway to Akumal, it was getting dark. The directions provided weren't as clear as I needed, but we found the right exit and made our way into Akumal. What a great community! We weaved our way around the cobble streets to Hacienda de la Tortuga. Even though it was dark, the security guard was waiting on our arrival. We loved the condo! My wife is a huge fan of mornings with coffee on the balcony overlooking the ocean and this one fit the bill. Although it is set back compared to some other condos, it was still an amazing view. The view directly below wasn't great as it was the roof of the restaurant, but still a great view. What a treat to have a restaurant on the first floor of the building! We ate there two times during our stay. Very good food! A coconut fell from a palm tree and nearly hit a lady in the head, so be careful where you sit. The beach wasn't huge, about 10 feet (3 m) to the water. If you are a fan of snorkeling, enter the water to the right of the condo. The snorkeling is good, several fish species, but I didn't see any turtles during my time. I did see one turtle while snorkeling in Akumal Bay. (Pro Tip: If you want to snorkel in Akumal Bay, when heading out of Akumal, turn left directly past the arch. There is a guard manning the chain gate. Pull up and tell him you're going to the restaurant (Lol Ha) and he'll let you in to go park. I can recommend Lol Ha, also. We ate there twice. Once the bill was really messed up, but we got it straightened out. Snorkeling in Akumal Bay can be crowded, but very cool. Back to the condo…the A/C works very well in the bedroom. We slept very comfortably. The shower didn't drain well, but there was plenty of hot water. In the kitchen, there was plenty of counter space and all the utensils and cookware you need. If you like to see wildlife, the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is a couple of miles away. We enjoyed it. Right across the street from HDLT are some coatimundis, which are so cute. I highly recommend this condo and we will be back soon! If you have any questions, let me know!

Perfect location, perfect views- exactly what we were looking for!
We are a family of 3 (we have an 8 year old), and were looking for something other than an all-inclusive resort. My desire was to get us off the beaten path a bit, and this condo i Akumal was perfect. We stayed March 17-23 for my son's spring break week. The weather was beautiful when we were in Akumal- it rained once, but mostly mid 80's. The condo is in the best part of Turtle Bay, in my opinion, for snorkeling. If you snorkel straight out from the shore, or veer either left or right out to the break, you can see a ton of sea life. A person can walk from there to anywhere in Akumal, essentially. We rented a golf cart for 40.00 per day for part of our stay- it makes it easier to get groceries, etc. The condo itself is light and airy, and we did not use the air conditioning at all (located in the bedroom only)- we just left the windows open and turned on the ceiling fans. We were never hot. There were a few stocked complimentary items- coffee, seltzer, milk, dry creamer and sugar which was nice, since we got in extremely late on Sunday night. The kitchen is perfect to cook in for a short time. The king bed in the bedroom is very comfortable. My son said the bed he slept on in the living room was "OK" as well. The view from the balcony is unbeatable- waking up to that ocean view every day is just amazing. The maid service was great (you don't have to have them clean every day, but if you do make sure to tip). Roberto at the front desk is fabulous and speaks very good English (my Spanish is minimal). he was very accommodating and can arrange anything you need. Cherri, the condo owner was very accommodating as well, and extremely helpful and flexible with us. I loved this place and did not want to leave! The one drawback is the restaurant downstairs, located directly beneath the balcony, can get a bit noisy until 10 pm or so, but we were so exhausted each night and slept so well it really didn't bother us. As far as drawbacks go, it's a small one. We will definitely be back to this beautiful, amazing place!

On the beach, friendly, & well-kept
We enjoyed our stay very much. We liked being at a small condo building with services similar to a hotel. The building is well-maintained with a modest charm. Half Moon Bay is beautiful and quiet, yet with nearby activities, restaurants & shopping. The 1 bedroom unit was lovely and light filled with a balcony looking out at Palm trees and the Caribbean. It seemed secure and safe. There are good snorkeling opportunities in the bay and a short walk away at Yal-Ku lagoon or Akumal Bay. Lots of transportation options meant we didn't need a car to explore sites near and further away. Kitchen was well-stocked. Daily maid service was good, though it would have been okay to have it less frequent. Other guests were welcoming and friendly; mostly retired couples. On the down side: not having a/c in the living area meant the apartment was often very humid and steamy. There was a limit to the hot water for showering. And despite great efforts at removal, the sargassum piles up on the beach and in the water. These negatives aren't necessarily in the owner's control, but to be aware of. Cherie, the owner was prompt and provided helpful info. She has designed and furnished the condo in a cheerful, serene way.

A Little Heaven in Akumal
My husband and I just spent a week at Hacienda de la Tortuga and really enjoyed our stay. For three days the beach was extremely windy and brought in a surprising amount of seaweed that made it difficult to swim. Nonetheless, the beach is beautiful. We made peace with that and chose to find other swimming opportunities not at our doorstep, like a local lagoon and other beaches. The condos are very well equipped and furnished with a gorgeous view of the sea. Ours was particularly private and we relished that. Having the opportunity to cook rather than dine in restaurants nightly is also appealing and relaxing. We enjoyed shopping for local ingredients to cook. However, if dining out nightly is your thing, there are three good restaurants in the area (walkable). In fact, one of them is right downstairs from the condo. BONUS: The seaweed miraculously disappeared midweek and the beach became a picture postcard shoreline with excellent snorkeling. We would go back!

Unbeatable View
Let me start with running the gauntlet of vendors on the main entrance road trying to get you to pull over and take one of their turtle tours. Pay them no mind and just keep going. We got there on a Saturday and it was super busy in the main part of “town” but once you get past the main area, it quiets down. The condo is on the third floor, so be prepared, but you can’t beat the view from the patio. It is well stocked with pots, pans, etc and does have a coffee maker. It does not have A/C except in the bedroom, but once you are used opening everything up and letting the tropical breeze run through, it is very pleasant. We spent most of our time on the patio soaking in the breeze and the sound of the waves. The owner noted the best place to get groceries is in Playa Del Carmen, but there are is a good size grocery store in Puerto Adventura and a couple in Tulum near the one traffic light. However, we didn’t find the small stores in Akumal to be terribly expensive for smaller items. There is also a great restaurant that is on the property that opens at 1:00. They have an extensive menu and a super friendly staff and they are relatively inexpensive by US standards. Also two other places to try are the Mi Buena Vida that is on the beach side on your way into the condo and the La Taverna that is in near the entrance. Again, great food, nice people. A few things to note: The sandier, and more popular beach in Akumal is not the one this condo is on. Half Moon is has a fantastic beach, but its rocky in the water, you will definitely need some sort of shoe to get in and out. However, the water is GORGEOUS once you are in and it stays shallow and calm, great for kids or folks looking for something a bit more calm. The most popular beach in Akumal is the sandier of the two and you will need to pay if you want to use it. Lastly, I don’t know if it was the time of year or recent storms but there was a crazy amount if seaweed from Cancun to Tulum. On a good point, it wasn’t really that bad in front of our condo, and you did not have to wade through it to get into the water. Over-all it was a great place to stay and would definitely stay there again in the future.

Wonderful Experience
This was my wife and myself’s first trip to Akumal, it was beautiful. The condo was great for us and the view from the patio was awesome. We had no problems and the staff was great. Lots of seaweed washed in several days while we were there, but the guys keep the beach as clean as they could. Again it wasn't a problem for us (Mother Nature). Cherri answered all of our questions regarding the condo and things to do in the area. I would suggest you go over the bridge to what I'll call old Akumal. Several great little restaurants to eat away from the tourist. The produce market on Wednesday and Saturday was great. We will be planning a trip back next year. My wife and I rented a car and drove down to Akumal. We visited Playa De Carmen and the ruins in Tulum. Great day trips. Driving out of Cancun was a little crazy but we made it.... FYI. Make sure if you rent a car get the insurance directly from the car rental company in the states. I would not recommend using Hotwire or Priceline, etc. Our vacation started out bad when we thought we had taken care of all this prior to our trip. We finally got it worked out but it was a big HASSLE and I mean BIG.

Clean, efficient condo w/spacious ocean-front balcony & view to die for
My husband and I enjoyed 4 nights at Hacienda de la Tortuga #9. The 1 bedroom condo is clean and comfortable. The kitchen is nicely equipped with more than enough cookware, a full size refrigerator, a small gas oven, microwave and coffee maker. The bedroom air conditioning worked great and was appreciated on hot April nights. The electronic situation is limited, so if that's an issue for you be aware, but for us it mattered very little. A handful of cds and dvds are provided, but we couldn't get the cd player to operate and the dvd player only played in black and white. There is wifi in the living room, but it doesn't work in the bedroom. This just prompted us to "unplug" and spend our evenings on the balcony, talking and listening to the ocean. The balcony is unusually large, with a handful of chairs and tables. The daytime view of the ocean is to die for and the nighttime sounds of the waves crashing was equally restorative. The restaurant, La Lunita, is located right beneath the balcony. I suppose the sounds of dining might bother some, but we didn't mind it at all. We intended to eat lunch at La Lunita our final day in Akumal, but unfortunately we discovered that it didn't open until 1pm and our airport pickup was at 1:25. We have eaten there on prior trips, though, and thought the food was excellent and the ocean-side dining phenomenal. We rented a golf cart from Mexicarte (by the arches) this trip, as we have done on prior trips, which served our needs well. We were very worried when we realized we wouldn't be able to charge the cart at the condo in the evening, something we were able to do when we rented a house with a garage, (in all fairness, we were warned of this in advance, but thought if we offered to pay, that we could surely talk the property manager of the condo into allowing us to buy some electricity - we could not). However, by eating at some very nice restaurants near the arches, we were able to put the golf cart on a charger at Mexicarte for sufficient time to keep it running. The battery never died on us and we really enjoyed the relaxed way the golf cart offered us transportation without having to stress over paying for and finding parking. We are so appreciative that the security guard at Hacienda de la Tortuga always found us a place to park the cart and kept an eye on it. He was wonderful. Overall, for a couple, we found the condo to be a nice size and a great location for staying in Akumal.
