IMPORTANT DISCLOSURES. PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING:
SOLAR-POWERED HOME:
-No electronic devices other than those provided and chargers for phones and consumer electronics.
-Absolutely no electric device with heating elements of any type.
-If you rely on medically necessary electronics, we would be happy to recommend a different property.
COOLED BY EVAPORATIVE COOLER: Evaporative coolers use less electricity but cool differently than air conditioners. If you prefer temps of low 70s or lower, we would be happy to recommend a different property.

Casa Tranquila, is a lovely and secluded home on twenty private acres of Terlingua Ranch. It is eco-friendly, with solar and wind power and rainwater catchment. Nestled in the saddle to two hills, the home has fantastic mountain views and lots of breezes. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy sunrises, sunsets, dark night skies, or a modern campfire at the propane fire pit.

This well-appointed two-bedroom home with a sleeping loft sleeps four to six. We recommend it for four or fewer. The house was custom built by the prior owners. The current owners enjoy it as their personal getaway and are proud to share it with others. After staying here once, you will want to return again and again.

The kitchen, dining room, and living room are open and spacious, with vaulted ceilings, lots of natural light, and windows for enjoying the views. The kitchen is fully equipped and stocked with all the cookware and dishes for enjoying meals together. The living room is designed for relaxing together, with comfortable seating, room to relax, charming décor, and a television with Dish Network and access to your Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services.

The bedrooms and sleeping loft will sleep four to six. Both downstairs bedrooms have a queen-sized bed. The sleeping loft has a full bed and two twin beds. The sleeping loft has a low ceiling and is ideal for children. However, we recommend that it not be used during the summer months due to heat rising into the loft area.

Outside of the house, there are shaded porches, stone patios, outdoor seating, a propane fire pit, charcoal grill, covered parking, and twenty acres of private Chihuahua desert habitat to hike and explore.

Located just 30 to 45 minutes from Big Bend National Park, Terlingua, the Rio Grande, and Big Bend Ranch State Park. You will have easy access to enjoy all the natural wonders and outdoor recreation opportunities the Big Bend. Take a scenic drive, hike the trails, raft the river, go for a horseback ride, enjoy a jeep tour, go for a ride on a mountain bike, watch the wildlife, view the star-filled night skies. The social scene is almost as dynamic as the landscape. Terlingua, the Terlingua Ghost Town, Lajitas, and Terlingua Ranch offer an assortment of dining, art, and music venues where you can eat, drink, and be merry. Or, just relax and unwind in the comfort of Casa del Oso.

The Neighborhood:
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.

Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.

People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.

The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

Big Bend Vacation Rentals started out in 2007 and initially managed three of the first four vacation rentals in the Terlingua and Terlingua Ranch area. We now manage dozens out of a couple of hundred options. We represent dozens of property owners and have hosted tens of thousands of guests. You can trust us as managers, and you can rely on the properties that we manage. We have become very selective about the properties and the property owners that we add to our portfolio. Fantastic Time
The house is advertised. Remote for great star viewing, clean, owner responsive, etc. Our 7 and 10 year olds loved looking at all the stars each evening. Also, the road in and out wasn't bad. There are lots of roads similar throughout Terlingua and Big Bend. Our mini van was fine for this. Great visit.

Big Bend visit with friends
Very cool house in out of the way location. Our group consisted of two adult couples. The house was beautiful and well supplied. Very clean with comfortable beds. We admired the solar and windmill supplied electrical systems. The location is drop dead beautiful sitting in a gap between two hills with spectacular views to the east and west. Awesome views of the clear night sky. Highly recommend …

Great visit with better views
The photos do not do justice to the views - which are incredible! Otherwise, the property is as advertised and there was plenty of room for us and our adult child. Everything you need to cook is in the kitchen - however, the coffee is pretty basic. If you are picky you might bring your own. I was nervous about the solar, but we stayed three nights and while it was cloudy we had no problems with power. People have commented on the road. Most of the drive is on paved road with just over 1 mile being on a graded dirt road. The driveway is a bit steep, but it certainly does not require 4 wheel drive. We have a Volvo SUV and had no worries. We will definitely return!

Great Home away from Home
This property is exactly as advertised and has everything you need to feel “at home” while also being away from it all. The home offers a feel of seclusion but also makes a trip to the area very comfortable, and also has an AMAZING view in the back! I’ve rented properties through Daryl and Janet multiple times, and they take great care of their clients and properties. This was no exception. I will be adding this home to my “favorites” in the area and will definitely look to stay here again.

If you are on the fence...this is the place!!
Our family of four (including two teenagers) stayed here between Christmas and New Year's Eve. We were in search of the perfect place to disconnect from work and electronics and we found that perfect place in Terlingua! As Vrbo newbies, we weren't really sure what to expect but all of our expectations, plus more, were met during our stay. From day one, Daryl and Janet were top notch communicators. There had been a few days of freeze prior to our visit that led to some plumbing issues at the house. Daryl reached out on Christmas Day to update us on the situation and Janet called as we were en route to Terlingua to let us know that everything was fixed. They must have worked round the clock to get everything repaired before our arrival which was greatly appreciated, especially with the holiday. The views from the house and the quietness were unlike anything I had ever experienced. We enjoyed sunrises sitting on the back porch drinking coffee and amazing sunsets sitting around the propane fire pit in the front of the house. And coming from the suburbs, we loved the amazingingly clear skies. Although we spent quite a bit of time in the Big Bend state and national parks, we could easily have been satisfied just hanging out at the house. If life ever takes us back to Big Bend and I sure hope it does, we'll be staying at Casa del Oso! Thank you, Daryl and Janet, for all that you did to make this a vacation to be remembered.

A Bit Rustic but Overall Great
It is a very nice house in a very beautiful setting. The views from the front and back porches are breathtaking. We had no issues whatsoever with the solar power - just follow the directions you receive. The owner and maintenance person were wonderful and the communication was great. My only issue is the road out to the house is rougher than I was expecting but you can manage it with a normal sedan. Would be better with a more rough road ready vehicle.

This house was a great spot to relax under the stars after long days exploring and hiking Big Bend. It had everything we need, and it’s impressive how much we did not notice being in a house that’s off the grid with its amenities. Would recommend.

Terrific Terlingua!!
This property is absolutely wonderful for viewing the night sky and getting away from everyone and everything! We stayed here while hiking and sight seeing in Big Bend. We were slightly worried about being off the grid but had no issues and were perfectly able to carrying on with our normal daily route. The sunsets were gorgeous!! The directions to the house were spot on. Just make sure you arrive before sunset it gets dark in the desert!

Beautiful stars
This house is exactly as described and very , very clean. Kitchen very well equipped. Plenty of water supplied by owner. We very much enjoyed the views and watching sunrises, sunsets, and the stars. We downgraded the overall rating only because of the driveway. It is described as well maintained gravel drive ok for sedans. That is technically accurate but it is very washboard like so our car really shook. This bothered me a bit as I sort of baby my car. However we would stay here again and bring a different vehicle.

peaceful desert seclusion
We stayed at Casa del Oso for 4 nights in March 2021. The property is exactly as described. We enjoyed the total seclusion of this desert ranch, so quiet with beautiful mountain views. We enjoyed sunrises, sunsets, and stargazing under the dark night skies. The kitchen is well stocked and we took advantage of the charcoal grill. We loved exploring the property. It is close to Terlingua and Big Bend which is why we stayed. Thanks!

Amazing stay
Just 2 of us, staying at Casa del OSO for a few nights, we loved it. This secluded place is a great gateway to Big Ben National and State Park. The view from the house is amazing and very serene, great for relaxing. The property had all the amenities we needed, we particularly enjoyed sitting by the fire pit at night enjoying the peaceful night of West Texas. Check-in and out was a breeze, everything was well detailed in the communications we had with the property owner, everything was handy to make it easy and smooth. We will be back to Casa del OSO as soon as we can ! Highly recommend if you are looking for a getaway in the Terlingua area.

This is our second stay within 2 years and it was again excellent. It is very quiet and seated well away from everything else. We had ample energy to power everything we needed. Definitely book here if you enjoy a feeling of quiet and isolation...while still knowing you're not too far from the closest store or Big Bend National Park.

Casa del Oso did not disappoint!
1. Make sure you download the PDF sent by email BEFORE the trip - I didn't and we just happened to notice the 1400 sign and a house that looked similar. We saved ourselved a DAY of frustration because our guts told us to turn around. GPS does not take you to house. 2. It took some getting used to the power system. We ran out of power the first night around 1:30 am. We didn't realize we could have called for assistance at that time via the landline (didn't dial 1 then the number) - Daryl was super helpful the next morning but it was a restless night due to a storm and no power. Daryl was super responsive and helpful the entire week. 3. The 4 out of 5 on cleanliness is due to the not usable mattress on the pull out couch. It was too hot to sleep upstairs but the mattress on the couch took that option off the table too. My 19 year old son slept on the couch each night. 4. I would visit Casa del Oso again with family and friends. We loved the remote location and felt good about leaving less of a carbon footprint on our vacation.

Very private and secluded, just what we wanted
We loved our stay at Casa Del Oso. The views from there were amazing, especially the sunsets. You can see a billion stars and the milky way at night. We stayed over spring break with our 16 year old son and enjoyed every minute. The house was very clean. The only minor issue we really had was with the coffee maker and that was probably just our user error since it was a camp style Mr. Coffee maker. But we discovered the percolator on the counter and it was perfect. We were careful to conserve water when showering, etc. The owners provided plenty of bottled water for our use. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend to others. The owners are very nice. Looking forward to our next visit.
