Very nice staff, free spa/public bath, and nice room. We tried the dinner buffet, but we would not recommend. Selection was limited and quality was less then expected based on price.

There were many onsens to choose from. The lobby area looks impressive. However, the staff spoke very little English. They charge 200 yen for each extra towel! We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids and they only have 2 large towels and I was told kids don't get towels! The room looked very dated and it was dusty. I am surprised that they charge much higher price for their rooms with such poor service. The only redeeming features was the yakiniku restaurant in the hotel was quite good and reasonably priced but again very dated decor. The view of the mountains is impressive.
This is a great place to stay near the National Park and Mt. Aso. Very comfortable rooms and three onsen (Japanese bath) and a personalized buffet breakfast along with three restaurants including great Korean barbecue

No English speakers working there. Very confusing staff people.
Aso Villa is probably the best place to base yourself for exploring Mt. Aso. In the wider world of hotels, it's a Frankenstein: a sprawling hodge-podge of different buildings connected by a maze of hallways. Like most ryokans, it kicks guests out each day from 10 am until 2 pm for cleaning, but has rooms with western-style beds and with a Japanese-style tatami-sitting area. This is very convenient if you don't like having to clamber around on the floor after a day of hiking. Aso Villa also has three or four different restaurants for guests to choose from. All have pretty good food and atmosphere, though the "Viking" buffet breakfast becomes a zoo each morning when the various tour groups pile in. But having that choice is key in a town with little choice for dinner options. Aso Villa also has a few onsen to soak in. If you're lucky, your room will have a view of Mt. Aso. All in all, a perfectly convenient place if not a beautiful hotel on its own.

An Ok hotel to stay at
Great stay. I would recommend it if you are in the Aso area for one night. If you can get a good deal that includes the dinner buffet, go for it. Breakfast and dinner were decent. The baths were nothing special, but nothing to complain about either.
Check-in was quick and painless. The hotel is big, so you have to do some walking to get to the public baths and buffet restaurant. The baths were Ok, nothing to write home about. The room was fantastic. Clean beds, nice bath. Our travel-mates got a room with tatami floor for relaxing. Ours had a nice big bath that we used in the morning. There was a mini fridge but it was moldy. A quick call to the front desk would have probably fixed that though. There is wifi in the rooms but no password is required, which made me feel a little uneasy. Not much to see outside, except the flower garden. There was also a nice soccer field with fake grass, but I don't play soccer. I didn't get a chance to check out any of the other restaurants, but the buffet was pretty good. I'd give it 3.5-4/5 stars if I could. Good food can make a mediocre hotel great.

Good hub location to travel in Aso areas
Located within a scenic area, Nice buffet, electric keetle is weak, rather conjested twin room with nice lobby. The Onsen facility is acceptable.
This hotel is reasonably close to Aso Volcano. The hotel has a big hot spring facilities with both indoor and outdoor hot springs. I would probably come back to this hotel simply because of the hot springs. There are other activities guests can do in the hotel. It's a good resort for families with children.
I heard friends saying that the dinner buffet was not particularly impressive. So, I tried something else. There are 4 to 5 restaurants guests can go to for dinner which is included as a package. I tried the Japanese shabu shabu. Not bad.
