Bernard and Bass Harbor are serenely just outside the tourist scrum of Acadia, and they also happen to be two of the most beautiful of its harbors. We've rented in this area many times, but Coveside is far and away the best rental we've ever had here, or, in fact, anywhere on MDI. The cottage is a tasteful but modernized version of an old Maine cottage. It's absolutely lovely and tranquil--with a sunrise watching platform, in addition to a large deck, both nestled in the trees but with water views. It's also brilliantly efficient, especially the kitchen, which is fully equipped--we used it and the very large propane grill almost every night. Although it's tempting to just enjoy the serenity of the cottage at mealtime (or any time), you're also just steps from Thurston's Lobster Pound, and from restaurants in Southwest Harbor. (There are also terrific grocery stores in Southwest--Sawyer's two outlets, in particular--and Beech Hill Farm for produce.) Ingrid was a gem--reliable, organized, but respectful of our privacy. We slept well here and enjoyed both the tranquility of the site and the proximity to Acadia. I can't recommend the cottage more highly. It was very hard to leave, in fact, and we're planning to come back soon. Reserve early--this is an absolutely wonderful rental and it books up well in advance. No wonder--it's absolutely adorable.
