Holidays in the monument combines heritage preservation and tourism. Historically valuable construction tools are taken over, gently renovated and rented as holiday apartments. The model makes a double profit: the monuments get a new future and holidaymakers experience a stay in an extraordinary building. The idea is realized by the foundation Ferien im Baudenkmal (FiB), which was founded in 2005 by the Swiss Heritage Society.

Eichhölzli - moderate modernity
History & Information
Built in 1933 by architects Hans Wildbolz and Max Rikli, this apartment building is a good, straightforward representative of the moderate modern age. It is located in a very heterogeneous residential area with a beautiful view. Originally the apartment building was isolated, with only one neighboring house, in the vineyards of Biel. Even today there are vine trails that lead from the monument directly into the old town.

The three-storey building, a clear solid construction with a flat roof, resembles an ocean liner by its rounded corners and balconies and is undoubtedly an architectural example of modern construction in its aesthetics. Like all art movements after the turn of the century, the architecture took over motifs based on a traffic and machine romanticism. In keeping with the spirit of the dawn of modernity. 
The Eichhölzli is structured by an east-facing staircase risalit, recessed attic and balconies. Characteristic of the style of the moderate modernity is the elegant, like a Eckerker protruding balcony on the southwestern corner. For the 1930s typical design features are also drawn through cornices over the corner windows and narrow vertical band windows in the stairwell. The front doors, including those on the ground floor, are more recent. The large garden is built according to the principle of "Form follows function" according to the layout of the house.
