## Emplacement
At the crossroads of five Alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified town in the 14th century. A Dauphiné town and the seat of important trade fairs, it is the capital of the Escartons. Located at the convergence of five valleys - Haute-Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes and Cerveyrette - the town of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical position.
The radiating structure of these valleys provided the town with relatively easy external access to Provence, Queyras, Isère, Drôme and present-day Italy.
This dense communications network has long made Briançon a land of passage, a major crossroads in the heart of the Alps, offering the best conditions for the movement of people, the traffic of goods and the exchange of cultures. Easily accessible from the resort of Serre-Chevalier, you can enter Europe's highest fortified town through the Porte de Pignerol, at an altitude of 1,326m, and be welcomed by the Heritage Department, which offers a variety of guided tours at 3pm every day, led by guides certified by the French Ministry of Culture, in French, English and Italian (German and Spanish for groups).
