We appreciated the location, and especially the staff. Most appreciated was the refund for our prepaid nights that we could no longer use due to changes in our schedule in Kumamoto.
The room was cozy but nice. Everything you need was there. The staffs were courtesy and helpful. The location was perfect too: a little walk about 5-10 min to the downtown area. Overall, it was convenient and nice. We enjoyed our stay.
Bed was very uncomfortable and thermostat was malfunctioning causing the room to be uncomfortably hot throughout the night. Shower drain clogged with hair and needed to be cleaned out in order for water to drain. Good price for location and friendly staff but would not stay again.

Standard cheap hotel more for business customers
Pretty standard for the cheaper hotels we’ve stayed in - we’ve been in Japan for 6 weeks, so stayed in quite a few! It’s very dated, but that’s normal for the cheaper hotels. The bed was too small for us both - it was a large single for 2 people, but not really sufficient for 2 so neither of us slept very well. Otherwise the bed was comfortable.
I think this is more of a business hotel - if you are looking for luxury this is not the place for you! But if you are only using the place to sleep in and spend the day out and about, it’s fine.
The reception area is large with an area to sit around in. Staff were very helpful and friendly and allowed us to leave our bags there for the day before checking in - this seems normal for most hotels thankfully since check in times are quite late - usually 3pm.
We wouldn’t stay here again, but good enough for a night if you spend the day out and about.
So hotel was really amazing. The room was really clean. The staff were amazing, they were able to understand me and were able to help me. The area is really close to food and shops, along with tourist attractions. Really amazing experience.
The location was great. Easily walked to shopping and the castle, which unfortunately was closed for renovations. The room size was sufficient and comfortable.
This hotel is easily the best value-for-money I've had in a while.
I think they recently renovated the hotel so it looks very nice with a lot of wood. My room smelt very new, was very big with two beds, and had a couple of chairs. Very clean. Beds and the *pillow* were sooo comfortable - best sleep in a while!
Reception area also cozy, connected with a cafe next door, very comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

If you need a good bed, Riverside may not be right for you. I felt like I was trying to sleep on metal wires coated in thin material. Two nights without sleep, I will not stay here again.
Great location, view, and the room was otherwise good. Staff are minimally helpful.
Booked a ‘semi double’ room so was of course expecting a small bed, basically a single bed, but room itself was very small as well. Rooms are a little bit old but for the price and location, excellent value for money.
very close to shopping area. easy to go every where.
Bk is very nice and many items choice.

Disliked: Room comfort
The location is very good close to the famous castle and major shopping area. Hotel breakfast is excellent with a lot of choices. But, the room and bed are two small for two persons.
I was staying at the hotel the night of the 6.4 earthquake. The hotel staff handled the situation with perfectly. They comforted people in the lobby, giving out food and bottled water. They brought down pull away beds for those that wanted to sleep. They set up a projector so the news could be broadcast. One of the hotel staff, who knew the most English, checked on me seeing that my Japanese was minimal.
