We had a confirmed reservation made through Expedia for 1 night (arrival on Jan 18, 2024). When we arrived at the property at around 6:00pm (local time) to check-in, we were denied access to the hotel. Instead, we were asked to leave the premises, because we questioned the 19 percent VAT surcharge the owner added to our bill from an earlier stay made a few days prior. He canceled our confirmed reseravtion on the spot in our presence! just because we had the audacity to question an illegal, unauthorized, surcharge to our earlier bill. According to Chilean law, foreign visitors with a passport and legitimate tourist card (which we showed him) are EXEMPT from paying the 19 percent VAT (aka IVA) surcharge. During the same 4 week trip we stayed at various properties in Chile, including those in Santiago, Puerto Varas, Cochrane, Puerto Ibanez, Puerto Tranquillo, Villa O' Higgins and not a single one of them added the 19 percent VAT surcharge to our bill. Fortunately, we were able to find alternative accomodations for the night, because we are resourceful and able to handle difficult situations. But beware, you may not be able to! particularly during high season, and end up sleeping in your rental car or on a bench in the nearby public park. Avoid the temperamental, unprofessional conduct of this owner and book your accomodations somewhere else. We have never been kicked out of a hotel before. Wow! what an unexpected first experience.
