Crater Lake National Park and Oregon's famed Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort, and the City of Bend are within an hour's drive. Warm weather makes paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking popular vacation pastimes for those who love the outdoors and enjoy the mountain views and lakes of the Central Oregon Cascades.
The area is full of outdoor recreation opportunities. Here are some options within an hour's drive:
-- Take a 10-min. drive to Crescent Lake for swimming at Simax Beach (we provide beach chairs & beach towels), boating, paddleboarding or fishing (also at Odell Lake). Both have resorts that offer rentals, but check availability on their websites at Crescent Lake Resort or Odell Lake Lodge and Resort.
-- A quick 15-min drive gets you to Willamette Pass Ski Resort for downhill skiing, sledding, or xctry skiing (rentals available). The Gold Lake Sno-Park a few minutes southwest on Hwy 58 offers excellent trails for seasonal hiking or xctry skiing and snowshoeing. Plenty of maps and information are available in our "Welcome" guidebook.
-- Heading a little further southwest (20-min from the cabin driving toward Oakridge), stop at Salt Creek Falls to see Oregon's 2nd highest waterfall. It will be on your left after passing the Gold Lake Sno-Park or Gold Lake Road (on the right side). A brief 100 ft walk from the parking lot near the restroom will unfold to a magnificent view of the falls. Stay and hike the trails while there.
-- Head north on Hwy 97 for a 45 min to one-1 drive to visit the Lava Caves, the High Desert Museum, or the city of Bend, Oregon (known for great microbrews and fun downtown vibe)
--Within 20 minutes, enjoy two fly fishing-only lakes (Gold Lake and Davis Lake) for rainbows, brookies, and bass. Both Crescent and Odell lakes offer fishing for lake trout and kokanee
-- Boat rentals are available at both Crescent and Odell lake resorts. Thirty-minute plus will get you to Wikiup, Crane Prairie, and Waldo Lakes. Drive 45 minutes to enjoy beautiful flyfishing-only at Hosmer Lake with outstanding views of Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters (also known for paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing on the lake's calm water). An hour away takes you to the famous Diamond, Paulina, and East lakes where boat rentals are available.
-- Need more ideas, feel free to contact us! Or, refer to our Welcome Book and brochures.
IMPORTANT NOTES TO GUESTS:
* BOOKING REQUIREMENT: The renter must be verified by VRBO to rent this property and have positive host reviews on their profile page. A condition of renting this property is that all guests shall comply with all house rules and check-out instructions.
* WINTER MONTHS: Snow and ice may be present. Vehicles with 4-wheel drive, snow tires, or chains are best for navigating spots of ice that may be present in this mountain area and on our driveway, which is on an uphill slope with curves. Before guests arrive, we have the Diamond Peaks snow removal contractor blow snow off the driveway, but spots of ice may still be present and AWD may not be sufficient. Come prepared. Please inquire.
* INTERNET WiFi: This is a mountain and forested area where Internet reception is suitable for standard use, but streaming on devices can be limited. A Verizon extender at the cabin enables Verizon devices with hotspot abilities to boost the Internet signal for internet use on Bluetooth-enabled devices, but keep in mind that WiFi bandwidth can also be affected by weather conditions.
* BOATS/TRAILERS: Our driveway may be challenging for large boats/trailers. Large boats can moor at Odell Lake or Crescent Lake, 10 minutes from the cabin. Smaller boats/trailers are fine. Please inquire.
* PERMITS: If you plan to visit recreation areas (lakes, trails, etc.) in Deschutes, Willamette, or Umpqua national forests, day-use parking permits (Sno-Park permits) may be required. Refer to the US Forest Service website for these national forests. If you have a federal "America the Beautiful senior pass," check to make sure it can be used at any recreation area you plan to visit.
