The New River Farmhouse offers a country atmosphere –in the vintage farmhouse, the decorating and in the setting. Situated just across the lane from the New River, with frontage along both the river as well a stocked trout stream, you'll find this country cottage the ideal spot to rock your cares away on the front porch. You might be mistaken for a local if you offer a friendly wave to the occasional passing car.

The vintage wood cabinets in the kitchen will take you back to yesterday and possibly your own memories of living in or visiting family who had one of these beautiful pine kitchens. You'll find all the basics you need to settle in for a few days or a week as you use this cottage as a base for your explorations. Of course, you may just want to stay close to home and explore the river and creek.

The pine paneled dining room has a table for 4, and adjoining bar offers seating for two more. Or you can dine al fresco by the river at the picnic table, enjoying the early evening light, the sounds of the water flowing past, watch the fireflies as dusk settles upon the region, and maybe spot a trout taking advantage of the shifting light. In the mountains, outdoor living is at its finest, and this property's setting by the river provides so many options.

In the evenings, you and your friends or family might choose to gather around the fire pit by the river – we are thinking maybe some s'mores are in order? Or you can all catch a movie – Netflix's vast selection is available at your fingertips. If you can't decide on which show to watch, there's a second TV in the bedroom with the Queen bed. You'll also find a DVD player and some options from the owner's collection of movies.

The farmhouse sleeps up to six people, with 3 bedrooms offering a comfortable King-size bed in one, Queen in another, and a full in the third. Quilts on the bed bring you back in time. In true vintage cottage living, they share a bathroom. Wood floors throughout the farmhouse add to the charm, and you'll enjoy the sounds of the rain on the metal roof.

Explore The High Country

The New River Farmhouse is located on the eastern side of Ashe County, and northeast of the town of Jefferson. From this location, you are able to get to the New River State Park's main location, which has an interesting and educational visitors' center, where you'll learn about the local hellbenders, which make their home in the river. We won't tell you more about these intriguing creatures – you'll have to find out for yourself.

You can also head up north to Grayson County, just over the line into Virginia, for a visit to the outstanding Grayson Highlands State Park, just barely over 30 minutes north, which is loaded with history in its cabin displays, hiking trails, and a wonderful display at the visitors' center. While there, you might get lucky and encounter a few of the wild ponies. You are an easy drive from West Jefferson, with all the shops, restaurants and galleries, as well as Mount Jefferson, and a leisurely drive to the town of Sparta in Alleghany County. All three towns host a variety of festivals throughout the year. If you like history, then definitely visit the Museum of Ashe County History in Jefferson, which offers the most amazing diorama of the old Virginia Creeper railroad as it progressed through the county.

Dogs Welcome! Must be well behaved, leash/crate trained, 2 years or older and 45lbs or less. $50 / per pet. 2 dog limit.

Beautiful and peaceful
We picked this spot out because it was pet friendly and we had a wedding to attend in the area! This was the perfect, peaceful, clean old farmhouse. We loved the country feel of this home. We plan on staying again in the summer so our son can enjoy the creek and river right across the road that hardly no one comes down. So quiet. So beautiful!

New River Farmhouse
We were very happy with this vacation. The location was great. It was private and everyone enjoyed the river experience. It was a little bit tough for some to get in and out of the river, but once you were in the water it was a nice part of the river to walk around in. I had fun fishing in the New River. The creek was nice also but not good for fishing.

Great location but fishing challenging
Property is in great location off the beaten path and has everything for a couple night stay you need. If you are wanting to fish, however, it's a difficult spot to fish from the bank and the creek is really small and low this time of year. For the hardcore fisher, I'd come early spring or later in the fall. for the family that wants to float the river, it's awesome. And the fireflies at night were spectacular. We'll be back definitely!!

Perfect center for hiking
My husband and I, and our dog, stayed for 3 nights and visited Mount Jefferson SP and New River SP, both very close. The property is on a very quiet road, right next to the river, ideal for walking, too. We had everything we needed, (except a hairdryer!) and recommend the place.

Very cozy and pleasant.
Overall very relaxing place. Personally could have done with a few less dust collecting "tchotchkes" that seemed to set off my allergies. That being said, I would stay again. I will just remember to bring some Zyrtec next time.

Great location for outdoor activities
Very close to New River State Park where we went hiking. Others there were kayaking. We spent another day biking down the Virginia Creeper Trail. It is a very short drive to the quaint downtown of West Jefferson. The house is very cozy. We had a nice relaxing weekend.
