We could have burned up
I was travelling with students and because I booked through hotels.com and wanted two rooms (I paid online with one credit card in one payment) they separated the rooms into two separate reservations and put us on separate floors. Then when I finally got us into the two rooms my room was cold so i wanted to shut off the air conditioner and I switched it to heat. Assuming the smell was because it was newly turning cold I didn't think anything of it. That's when the smoke detector started blearing in my room. Assuming the fire alarm was going, ishut off the power to the unit and we took off our into the hall where we realized the alarm was only in our room and no one cared if we did burn up. I went back in and opened the window and dealt with the blearing noise of the alarm. Still 5 minutes of beeping and no one even noticed.
