About this property

Historic Old Farmhouse and Angus Cattle. Family and Pet Friendly!

Welcome to the iconic Higgins House, a beautiful farmhouse nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy the secluded mountain farm life and relax on 6 acres of private property with a bubbling mountain stream and Black Angus Beef Cattle, you won’t have to worry about neighbors!! Easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway and conveniently located between Sparta, NC and Galax, VA. Within easy driving distance of the New River Trail, Blue Ridge Music Center, Stone Mountain State Park, Doughton Park, and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area for lots of outdoor fun.

Construction of this historic house started prior to the civil war. The house is built upon a rock foundation with mortise and tenon logs and features interesting historic features such as hand planed interior boards, three chimneys with two wood burning fireplaces, two covered porches, and original hardwood floors. Outbuildings include a spring house previously used for refrigeration and a barn built over the nearby stream.

Renovation started on this farmhouse in the early 2000s. Though full of historic character, enjoy modern comforts including fully functional kitchen and stainless steel appliances, claw footed soaking tub and shower in the large bathroom, efficient heating and air conditioning, gas logs, and double filtered mountain spring water.

There are 4 mini-split heating/cooling units in the house located in: Kitchen, Den, Master Bedroom, and Upper Queen Bedroom. Please leave the mini-split settings for the vent direction and fan speed on the automatic setting as it will heat/cool the room more efficiently and without excessive noise or temperature variations. To use the remote, just select heating or cooling, and direct the remote in the direction of the indoor unit and select your preferred temperature setting. It is best to leave the remote to each mini-split in the middle or far side of each room.

There are gas logs in the living room and an included remote. To use the remote, stand close to the gas logs and direct the remote to them to turn on and off, or select the desired automatic temperature.

The upper bedroom with the standard bed and twin bed has ancillary heating and cooling with an eden pure heater and window a/c unit. The bathroom’s heat is also provided with an eden pure heater. Adjust to your preference.

There are two wood burning stoves in the open fireplaces of the kitchen and den. If you build a fire, please be responsible and don’t leave a fire unattended. There is firewood on the porch for your convenience if you plan to start a fire in one of the wood stoves. The damper is open to the wood stove when the bottom rod is pulled out toward you, you may close the damper after the fire gets hot to last longer and control heat. There is also a galvanized bucket on the porch for ash removal if needed.

Cellular service is best with Verizon in the mountains of NC, however you may still have service with other carriers when you are connected to the fiber wi-fi that is provided.

Checkout procedure is as follows by 10 am of your departure day:
• Start dishwasher with any left over dinnerware
• Place used towels and bedsheets (not comforters) on the floor near the laundry room
• Place trash in garbage can behind kitchen outside
• Replace furniture, pillows, etc. to their original location
• Lock the door
• Please come back!

Visit back home
The farmhouse was perfect. I went back in time to my grandmother's. My sisters and brother live close and were able to visit on the front porch, have a family meal in the kitchen.and play Farkel. Could not have been any better. Will definately be back again. wleaving home y

Excellent Weekend
We had a wedding not too far away and this was the perfect location for a few couples to use instead of the hotel that was both further away and more expensive. We would 100% stay again!

Nostalgic getaway
My husband has mobility and health issues that prevents him from traveling. I found this farm on VRBO 2hrs from our home on charlotte and a few miles from Galax where we lived in the 70's. It was a perfect few days for him to enjoy rocking on the big front porch, and "inspecting" the1600's farmhouse! Its a great place to stay and Sam a generous host!

2nd Stay
This was our second stay in the Farm House. The charm and character of the home are just wonderful. Nice modern appliances make food prep easy, and there is a nice gas grill if you want to cook out.

Awesome for Peace and Relaxation!
We loved, loved this property. The bathroom is off the charts - especially the claw foot tub!! We stayed 4 nights and highly recommend. We wanted to get away from the daily hubbub and relax, and this is definitely the spot for that. We plan on staying again :)

This place took me back to my great grandmothers house when I was a kid 50 yrs ago. If your used to or grew up around those types of homes you will love this place. The only thing I would warn about is that there is only 1 large bathroom, and while it is a good size including a claw foot tub, the door from the bathroom to the living room is a barn sliding door that does not close all the way for total privacy. It wasn't an issue for us but may be for some... The host is great, very responsive and we really had a great time there.

Wonderful Farmhouse
The home was just as advertized. It is a wonderful old farmhouse with all of the character you would expect. It reminded me of my grandparents home of which I have many fond memories. The modern appliances and convenience amenities were great, but the character of the house was the best part. My wfe and I had a very enjoyable stay. We will definitely stay again.
