Magic Underground Hobbit Hole @ Sustainable Ecovillage

Approximately 260 sq ft, earth sheltered structure within our permaculture-based, sustainable, off-grid village. There is potable fresh spring water in the Hobbit Hole and no electricity. It is one of a kind in architecture and theme with colored bottles built into the wall, stained glass windows, center tree pillar with atrium windows above, and medieval Celtic Cross above the Hobbit Hole (outside and atop) give it a Hobbity Church feel.

Heads up! This is a Rainforest and the Hobbit Hole, as lovely and fun as it is, was built into the side of a mountain with springs, which are everywhere here. There is a essentially a seasonal stream that flows through the building and runs through and under the house -- on purpose -- so there is often the sound of a babbling brook in the HH November thru May. During a rainy week, expect the floor to be wet, for there to be condensation --it's a damp cave in the winter. Bring a sleeping bag and for the best experience, and firewood for the Hobbit wood stove is a must when weather is wet.
This location is very beautiful if you are into nature --and remote -- so please be sure you've read through the full description and are prepared for certain elements of "roughing it" and adventure travel. In fact, let me talk you OUT of coming here....

--There are bugs here spring through fall (it deep in the wilderness) dirt in places (as the dirt/forestry roads coming in are gravel roads and THIS IS A AN OFF-GRID FARM).
-- Accessibility: This is within the Siskiyou Mountains, so, hilly/steep and 5 miles deep into the national forest. This makes some people nervous. It's a gravel forestry road with some small potholes and our driveway is a little rougher.
-- Beds. Our rooms are always clean but the sheets are likely from a thrift store, probably don't match, and may have stains on them, or tears. There won't be a fancy duvet or chocolates on the pillow. It's very rustic.
-- The Village is also a work-in-progress so we are likely to be working and there may be some construction and messes around. It is NOTHING like a resort. Just some good peoples in the middle of a vast National Forest/wilderness area endeavoring to live off the land in a self-sufficient, sustainable, holistic way.
-- Animals: Between the two Border Collies who run around at night chasing forest creatures, springtime frog concerts and the early-rising chickens, it is likely that there will be some animal noises or general forest sounds occurring at unpredictable moments during the night and day.
-- Wild animals: There are various of these that live in the forest, including skunks, chipmunks, foxes, black bears, and many birds and insects. Since we have dogs and people around, the wild animals tend to keep their distance from the areas that we use. If you are lucky, you might spot a black bear on a hike or one the forestry road coming in; they are basically like big raccoons and prefer to run away from humans.
-- But THINK FARM. As such, we might track muddy footprints into the bathhouse if its raining (this is rain forest) and there's almost always a project going on, so there could be a leaf pile outside your cabin, other possibilities, too.

If you're a city-city person, maintain LOW expectations. Think CAMPING with some perks.

Perks/Amenities
--Lighting / Electricity: Your cabin does not have electricity; we recommend that you bring your own lights as it can get very dark here.
--Bathhouse: It is a shared space (with all residents and guests) with an indoor composting toilet (bucket with seats) a bidet and an adjoining wood-fired steam sauna, cold plunge tub, and cold shower. It is about 150 ft away from the TH.
---Community Kitchen is a common area with an indoor kitchen, refrigeration, stove, and all the condiments and utensils you need. It's community space -- and you are a part of our community while you're here.
-- Swimming hole, trails (Nick's Trail)
---(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, like one bar, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area. We do not have wifi.
-- Our dogs, Happy and Boo will bark and look mildly invigorated while they herd your vehicle when you arrive, then want petting and tummy scratching. They are clever con-artists convincing you that they are never loved and will woo you.

There was a (mostly) ground fire, the Smith River Complex Fire, in August of 2023. We lost seven buildings and some animals. No human lives were lost. Our area is very green, but you'll notice harder burns coming in on the forestry road. Updates on our renewal progress on sustainable ecovillage do tc om

You are welcome to wander anywhere, hang out in gardens, Sasquatch Temple, our Solarium, visit the swimming hole, visit with animals, trails, etc. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

If I didn't scare you off too much, welcome : )

A place in nature
This is a good place for someone who enjoys camping and being with nature. The people are nice. The scenery and a sky full of stars at night made the trek worth it. My young daughter was amused by the animals and was thrilled getting eggs from the hens.

1. This is camping in the back hills. Worth the trip. It is as advertised. bring your own blankets and food that can be warmed on a wood stove. 2. The area had a recent fire but is recovering nicely. 3. the camp itself is worth the trip 4. Communication from expedia to vrbo to Dan Sasquach was severely lacking.

DON'T STAY HERE!!!
Easily the worst Vrbo experience I have ever had. After driving miles through a burnt out forest, my wife and I arrived at the destination only to find that someone lives in it. The unit was dirty, had the person's personal effects strewn all over, liquor bottles, it had an unpleasant odor and was not anything like the pics that Vrbo showed. My wife and I left immediately. I have every intention of getting a refund on this unit.

Interesting and fun
Loved this place and would recommend. My only minor complaint is that the pathway leading up to the building was overgrown to a point where I had to duck and dodge a rose branch and grape vines. I love wild overgrown gardens but pathways should be kept open. It made it more difficult to load and unload than necessary. After a 6 hour drive with the sun beating on you, you don’t want any more complications. Again, besides that, wonderful.

Off grid adventure
Our first drive into the property has me anxious, because the road was on the side of a mountain! Once there, it was truly a sanctuary. We loved our hobbit hole! Each day we spoke with wonderful people living at this property, including the kind owner, Dan. The bed in the hobbit hole was very comfortable. The smell of the hobbit hole was like old burned wood which took getting used to. There was also spiders and eggs around the hobbit hole- thankfully spiders aren’t so scary to me but I could imagine this being a problem if you don’t like spiders. The composting toilet was really best too- not gross at all and now I’m convinced we all need them! We love the hobbit hole!

Hobbit house
We were not fully prepared for staying here. We forgot a few essentials, but we made it work. I would definitely bring your own pillows and blankets. I would also suggest a solar powered or battery lantern or flash light. There is a sink in the room, but the bathroom is a short walk up the hill. The hobbit house was fun to stay in! The only complaint is lack of air flow and the mice. Even with the door open, not a lot of cool air got in because there are no windows to open. The community is pretty cool! It's off the grid, so there is no electricity or service. There is a working stove and refrigerator in the community room. It was nice to be secluded for a couple nights. Over all a cool experience!

Provides adventure but has seen better days.
We wanted an adventure and this place provided it. It is cut off from the rest of the world, providing extraordinary forest beauty, peaceful surroundings and no electricity. It is very run down since the pictures were taken and the room was filthy. After making the reservation we noticed that no updated reviews are posted since 2020 and that scared us a bit, but we chose to go anyway to add intrigue to the adventure. Thankfully, the perennial flowers that were planted years ago were blooming in abundance, but so were the weeds that are taking over. The room really needs a good cleaning. The host seemed like a very nice person but he either doesn't care about cleaning and providing some of the bare essentials (linens, towels, soap, candles, matches were all missing and all needed) or he is overwhelmed with all he has to do on his large property. The only toilet is in a shared facility which is an uphill walk and dangerous to maneuver at night if you are not familiar with the area. You really should be in good physical shape to go here because you are either walking uphill or downhill wherever you go and some areas are steep. The best parts of the stay were the billion stars in the sky at night, the sound of the birds, the soft breeze and sunshine (lucky weather days for us), and Happy the friendly dog. It also helps to have a traveling companion with a sense of humor and a sense of adventure.

No clean bedding and there was a bucket for going to the bathroom. We were supposed to put wood chips on our feces in a home depot orange bucket. We did not stay there.

The place was great, but I was double booked
I booked the Hobbit Hole for the night of July 10th. I got to the room and put my things in the room. I loved it...so cute! I then sat outside to have some wine and cheese and read my book. About an hour later another woman came and said she was booked in that room. I had to gather up all of my belongings and move up the hill to the half moon cabin. This cabin was very cute and very clean. Other than the confusion, I enjoyed my stay.

Nice permaculture hideout with the Hobbit house
Nice permaculture hideout with the Hobbit house. Primitive, and the 20 minute forest rd to get there is remote. Such a cool experience. Def enjoyed it.

retreat wish come true
Me and my beloved wife/partner/goddess needed to find a place that would serve us as a reflective get away over the holidays. We are going through a momentous change in our journey together, indeed it has taken up until now to do this write up because the new year has been so hectic, and, looking back, our time at the Hobbit Hole (there and back again etc) was just about as perfect as it could have been. We were given room to breathe as guests whilst at the same time invited into the homely world of our hosts. We were invited on a goat walk which was meditative as well as joyous (a phrase was introduced to our lexicon "not so much running with wolves more walking with goats") and Dan gave us some real insights into other ways of being in the world. This fitted very much with the theme of our time there. It doesn't really matter whether or not you are into JRR Tolkien's canon or not, this place is delightful and I highly recommend it to all.

Extraordinary Experience
We absolutely loved our stay in the little Hobbit Hole at Maitreya Mountain Village! Like the listing states, it is a bit primitive, so do not expect luxury. But certainly expect to be impressed! This little community has done wonders with their property, and if you're looking to get off the map for a short getway, this is the perfect place. We drove all the up from the Bay Area, and I can say without a doubt it was worth the trip (it also helps that the drive is full of fun stops along the way). The Hobbit Hole is a bit of a walk from the Communal Space and the Bathouse, but there is a little camping toilet so that we did not have to leave the hut in the middle of the night to go pee! The fireplace keeps the hut nice and warm at night. The only issue we had, which pretty much goes hand in hand with the outdoors, is bugs. They can and do get into the hut, but if you're an outdoorsy person than you should be used to this. Highly recommended for a couple for small group of friends!

One of a kind Experience....Magical, private and relaxing
The pictures don't do the property justice. It's even more beautiful and magical than anticipated. It's located in lush green forest. There's a swimming hole with crystal clear water that's perfect for cooling off and enjoying a picnic. The property is a short drive to the ocean if you wanted to hangout on the beach. Although, we didn't leave the property until we checked out because once you're there you won't want to leave. This is a must stay.... I will definitely be going back!!

Very unique. Enjoyed 1 nite. Nobody around to check in so we just went into the Hobbit Hole structure. No running water in Hole even though sink & knob were there - just a minute amount trickled out and it stopped. Had to use our bottled water for washing hands & brushing teeth.
