Remote Off-Grid-Rustic Tree House @ Sustainable Eco-Village

Sleep high in a tree overlooking our forested valley! And welcome to sustainable living! We have made our off grid, wilderness, mountainous, agroforestry and permaculture project available to the VRBO guests to experience.

The two beds in the Treehouse (one in the loft) are twin mattresses, tight for two people. It has fit four adults, but ones who like to sleep close to one another. Otherwise, think of it as a two person cabin, although six have occupied it. No electricity, heat, or plumbing -- it is a rustic cabin. Come prepared

This location is very beautiful if you are into nature --and remote -- so please be sure you've read through the full description and are prepared for certain elements of "roughing it" and adventure travel. In fact, let me talk you OUT of coming here....

--There are bugs here spring through fall (it deep in the wilderness) dirt in places (as the dirt/forestry roads coming in are gravel roads and THIS IS A AN OFF-GRID FARM).
-- Accessibility: This is within the Siskiyou Mountains, so, hilly/steep and 5 miles deep into the national forest. This makes some people nervous. It's a gravel forestry road with some small potholes and our driveway is a little rougher.
-- Beds. Our rooms are always clean but the sheets are likely from a thrift store, probably don't match, and may have stains on them, or tears. There won't be a fancy duvet or chocolates on the pillow. It's very rustic.
-- The Village is also a work-in-progress so we are likely to be working and there may be some construction and messes around. It is NOTHING like a resort. Just some good peoples in the middle of a vast National Forest/wilderness area endeavoring to live off the land in a self-sufficient, sustainable, holistic way.
-- Animals: Between the two Border Collies who run around at night chasing forest creatures, springtime frog concerts and the early-rising chickens, it is likely that there will be some animal noises or general forest sounds occurring at unpredictable moments during the night and day.
-- Wild animals: There are various of these that live in the forest, including skunks, chipmunks, foxes, black bears, and many birds and insects. Since we have dogs and people around, the wild animals tend to keep their distance from the areas that we use. If you are lucky, you might spot a black bear on a hike or one the forestry road coming in; they are basically like big raccoons and prefer to run away from humans.
-- But THINK FARM. As such, we might track muddy footprints into the bathhouse if its raining (this is rain forest) and there's almost always a project going on, so there could be a leaf pile outside your cabin, other possibilities, too.

If you're a city-city person, maintain LOW expectations. Think CAMPING with some perks.

Perks/Amenities
--Lighting / Electricity: Your cabin does not have electricity; we recommend that you bring your own lights as it can get very dark here.
--Bathhouse: It is a shared space (with all residents and guests) with an indoor composting toilet (bucket with seats) a bidet and an adjoining wood-fired steam sauna, cold plunge tub, and cold shower. It is about 150 ft away from the TH.
---Community Kitchen is a common area with an indoor kitchen, refrigeration, stove, and all the condiments and utensils you need. It's community space -- and you are a part of our community while you're here.
-- Swimming hole, trails (Nick's Trail)
---(Lack of) Phone / Internet: Some Verizon and US Cellular service is available, like one bar, but AT&T and T-Mobile do not service our area. We do not have wifi.
-- Our dogs, Happy and Boo will bark and look mildly invigorated while they herd your vehicle when you arrive, then want petting and tummy scratching. They are clever con-artists convincing you that they are never loved and will woo you.

There was a (mostly) ground fire, the Smith River Complex Fire, in August of 2023. We lost seven buildings and some animals. No human lives were lost. Our area is very green, but you'll notice harder burns coming in on the forestry road. Updates on our renewal progress on sustainable ecovillage do tc om

You are welcome to wander anywhere, hang out in gardens, Sasquatch Temple, our Solarium, visit the swimming hole, visit with animals, trails, etc. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

If I didn't scare you off (too much), welcome : )

There is no specific address for this tree house, even other buildings nearby. Thus, it is not easy to find it. There was fire in that area in 2023.

As long as you set your expectations to truly camping in a tree house you won't be let down! The directions were so helpful, we had a bit of confusion about where to park, and it is a cold water only place. But it was such a treat to camp in a tree house, to take the dirt roads and truly be off the grid, and the cold water added to the experience. We were charmed by the mosaics all over the farm, and my children still talk about the sweet dogs that stuck by our sides the whole time. We will absolutely come back and enjoy more time there in the future.

My lady and I were looking forward to enjoying this property as part of our recent vacation along the west coast. The driving directions northbound from Crescent City were fairly accurate. But we were unable to reach the destination at all. We were using a four wheel drive car. The 3 1/2 mile dirt road from the paved road to the yellow gate was no problem. The gate was open as advertised and easy to find. But then we got to the choice between the very make shift bridge or the river fording. Our car was not designed for high water clearance or the large rocks in the river so we tried the bridge. The bridge has no edge guards and has a very steep high ramp at both ends. These ramps and the bridge are extremely narrow and, due to the sharp angle, prevent the vehicle driver from being able to see the bridge surface at any time. Fortunately, we made it across without running off the edge but I strongly do NOT recommend others trying it. Then we were faced with the remainder of the narrow and very steep dirt road into the property. We made it the mile to the remote marked cabin parking area. But that area is still very far from and out of sight of the settlement and tree house. We could not have parked there and made it by foot up the steep mountain to the building(which we never saw or reached). The remaining dirt track was not drivable by our 4 wheel drive vehicle. After waiting for someone to come down, we eventually left without ever reaching the cabin. Had to rent elsewhere.

When booking you are warned to temper your expectations down. That’s no lie. We camp frequently with a trailer in BLM land and have very low expectations all the time in New Mexico. Don’t ask questions before arriving because you get snarky answers. Also don’t hang anything on the treehouse porch rail because the sweet Aussie they have will climb up and pee on it while you’re sleeping. But for the price this is worth it and we think it’s cool we got to say we stayed in a treehouse in the Redwood Forest.

Unique stay
We were looking for a unique stay near the redwoods and this was certainly it. The description was completely accurate as far as how remote it is, and what the amenities are. It is a shared community, bathrooms, kitchen, ect. There is no power in the tree house - It is over 20 miles away from any town. Up a dirt gravel windy road. You will have to park away from the tree house, and be prepared to walk on uphill ground. We thought this stay was perfect for us, and what we were looking for. It was clean, beds were ready and it was exactly how it was described.

Dirty cabin - but wonderful unexpected find
I came with 2 friends later in the evening, found the treehouse easily after the owner's detailed instructions in the comments. However, the tree house had obvious signs of someone staying there, the sheets were clearly freshly slept in, and someone's belongings were scattered all throughout the cabin. There was no way to contact the owner to see if there was a schedule mix up or not as the service was poor. We didn't even know that there was no one on sight to ask. It's very much a community of cabins where everyone is independent of each other. Once we got over the dirty and unclean cabin (in the COVID world, that's a little scary), and found out how GORGEOUS the land was....it was amazing. It is such a wonderful community area with a self sustaining way of life. The way of life up there left a positive impact on us, self sustaining and doing our best to leave a small footprint. It turned out to be a fantastic stay and a wonderful experience!!!

Fun overnight experience
The drive into the mountain was nice, it's located off an old logging road. The tree house was clean, included plenty of linens, additional sleeping bags and a board game. The weather in July was nice in cool for sleep and the views were peaceful. The dogs on the property were a little nervous upon arrival but we made friends with us and kids real fast, they would actually run alongside my kids when they went walking. People working at the site were nice. Never met the owners and check-in would have been nicer if we knew exactly what to do and if someone could have showed us around. The only warning I will provide for future guest is I wouldn't recommend the tree house for small kids (4 and under) there is a large gap between the tree house structure and stairs, my 3 year old (wasn't there) could easily fall through it, not safe. Thank you for a great overnight experience.

True getaway
The host description is spot on and the directions are exact. If you are not up to unpaved roads up a mountain and compost toilets, then you will not appreciate what this place has to offer. Beautiful views, friendly on-site people. Enjoyed conversing with all present. Community kitchen was fun, dogs were friendly, the cat who let us know he owns the tree house was entertaining, mountain air was refreshing, enjoyed being unplugged for a bit.

Not what we expected
About five miles off the highway. Road is kind of step. When we arrived at the tree house there was no locks on the door or curtains on the windows to be able to have some privacy while staying. Bathroom is a little walk away and was very interesting to have to use a bucket to go. Tree house had lots of bugs and the commons area to cook felt very messy. We opted to not cook our dinner and not even stay our second night. This is basically a place to camp, kind of expensive place to stay For camping. Just didn’t feel warm and inviting.

If you are looking for a very minimalistic, great night sleep experience with nature, this is for you! The driving directions were very detailed and easy to follow. The road coming in and driveway to the property is very rough so be careful but this was properly communicated. Just make sure you come in during daylight.

If you are looking for a beautiful adventure, this is the place. Dans directions are perfect and will get you there easily. The treehouse was amazing and the views beyond amazing! We loved the entire property...the other little cabins, the main house, the goats, chickens, rooster, and dogs. We even took a little hike out the trails past the main house. We will definitely be back!

Unique experience. The 4 mile dirt road was a little bit more of an adventure than expected. Definetly rustic, and a pretty uncomfortable bed didn't agree with an old mans back, but a fun experience, all in all.

I liked the treehouse and the ride to the property. The problem for me: I have a non-aggressive dog and the three dogs running free on the property were quite dog aggressive. As such I didn’t really get to explore the property.

Not the experience I had in mind
The treehouse is neat, we have always wanted to stay somewhere like this and were 100% okay with no electric, etc, however, our experience just wasn't what I was hoping for. When staying in a treehouse, I wasn't expecting it to be "clean," but the one thing I do expect are clean sheets when I pay to stay... we arrived the sheets were clearly slept in. The woman there that night was extremely apologetic and took care of it right away. The bathroom, although a bucket that you scoop soil into after you go, was actually not bad... it didn't really even stink. However, the bugs are BAD, we camped and hiked all around upper Cali and Oregon and the bugs on this property were by far the worst (maybe all the fruit trees or compost? Not sure). The air is not the fresh air that you would think you'd get in an off-grid location either... again, not sure what causes the smell, but it is distinct. Also, the cancellation policy is very harsh compared to all other places I've stayed or considered... 0% refund if it's 60 days or less. Even a few weeks would be fine, but 2 MONTHS? The view from the treehouse is beautiful, and the inside is cute but overall I would not recommend staying here.
