For a 1* pension hotel the room I had as a solo traveller was superb !
Good sized room, sink, fridge, and balcony was just perfect.
Also the property has clearly been renovated as everything appeared new and the common WC/ shower rooms are very modern with a very hot power shower.
Raphael and Carlos keep the property spotlessly clean and do a great job.
I highly recommend Pension Alcala, but its best to try and book a room with a balcony
Place sucked! AVOID it if you can. Had an angry guy get in my face (claimed to be the manager) saying I was playing music all night as I was asleep! 2nd time at a hostel lesson learned to spend extra money even for a hotel/motel! Nothing great about this dump. ..again AVOID!!

Xenophobia & discrimination at Pensión Alcalá.
I am a 64-year-old Norwegian citizen of Venezuelan origin who witnessed and experienced xenophobic and discriminatory treatment from the staff at the Pensión Alcalá. The owner and receptionist refused to assist an elderly Italian man, asked for an undue deposit, and made vile comments about Italians in general, forcing the man to leave. I was was denied a late check-out, insulted and verbally abused with demeaning references to Venezuelans, and kicked out before check-out time. I am demanding a refund, compensation, and action and sanctions from Expedia to prevent such behaviour. I plan to invoke Article 21 of the EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Good price and location
First the bad. My room had no TV, no phone, one small cupboard in which a fold away table and chair was stored. Electricity cut out twice. Service (ie tidying of room and change of bedding) didn't happen once in my 5 night stay. My room had it's own bathroom but had a musty odour from the drain. No meals available. Now the good. The hotel location is excellent, easy walking to local bars and the town harbour and beach-footpath. WiFi is excellent. My room was clean and I think secure and whilst bedding/towels weren't tidied or changed it means it's sustainable. A bathroom external to my room for common access was very good, no issues. The price is good too, far less than some of the overpriced (in my view) opulent nearby hotels. So in short this is excellent for a short stay if you don't mind 'roughing it a bit' and you want very good value for money, not so good if you want a longer stay as the lack of facilities would become burdensome.
Great family run hotel. Simple rooms but nice to have a fridge and sink in the room. My single room had use of a shared bathroom which was always available and spotless. I was able to keep my bicycle secure.
I got the impression that guests were a necessary but unwelcome fact of running this sort of business. Room was sparse and the bed creaked so much if you moved you work up. Having said that it was cheap and only one night.
I stayed here two nights first time on Tenerife so booked a bit blind not knowing the area and I hit a winner. Excellent location in a small village with everything I needed close by - bus stop (I decided not to hire a car for this trip), supermarket at the end of the street, cafes/bars a few doors down, quiet and very clean. There are rock pools near by and a great walk all the way to Los Gigantes which I took my time to do for an entire day. Very clean room and bathroom which can be hit or miss for a pension. Not being able to check-in between 3-6.30pm is I have to say annoying - this is a long window of time and when booking cheap flights it's not possible to align both. My flight arrived early afternoon so by the time I got to the area, I had to wait 2 hours to check in - this is wasted time and part of what I pay for. Seemed the bar wasn't open or serving food or I didn't know about it. This is a shame because the walls and interior hold a lot of history and has a rustic ambience. Be great to hang out in the space over a drink. Nonetheless, I'd stay again for a few nights.
My son and I have just returned from spending 2 weeks at Pension Alcala and we had a wonderful time at this hotel. Also, the village and beach (la playa) were beautiful. We swam in the sea everyday! This hotel was the cleanest I've ever stayed at, the staff worked tirelessly everyday keeping the place immaculate, especially the toilet and shower, which was cleaned repeatedly throughout every day. I will definitely be returning to Pension Alcala. A wonderful trip. Lindsay Clark, Scotland x
I am giving this Pension an excellent review because it was an extremely clean , comfortable and friendly place to stay.Yes it was simple and basic but was also reasonably priced allowing me a winter break. The owner and staff are charming and could not do enough for me.It is in a beautiful area.I loved sitting on my little balcony having breakfast.Everything you need is close . Lovely restaurants, bus stop and supermarket. Will I go back? Definitely ! Will try owners restaurant next time,I promise.
