Sharpsburg Retreat--Civil War Home Near Antietam Battlefield, C&O Canal Towpath

Antietam Guest House is a historic log and stone home in the quiet rural town of Sharpsburg, best known for its proximity to the Antietam National Battlefield, site of the famous Civil War battle. The house has three levels. Sleeping areas are on the first and third level, a total of four separate beds. Happy to answer any questions about the sleeping arrangements. Middle level has kitchen and sitting room. Bathroom with shower is on middle level. Front porch and back deck have chairs and table for outside weather times. Motion detected flood lights at back porch for nighttime security.

Free, unlimited Wi-Fi keeps guests connected to the unbounded internet world. Full kitchen with dishwasher. All linens supplied. Washer and drier with laundry soap. Central air conditioning and heating keep the house comfortable. A fan and ceiling fan help move air through the house. Supplemental heating systems can be turned on if the weather is frightful.

The house accommodates six. Beds are on the top and bottom levels. On the top level is the bedroom with a queen bed. The bedroom has a half bath. On the top level, on the landing at the top of the steps, a twin-size day bed adds a sleeping option. On the bottom level, there is a queen pull out sofa and a twin pull out chair-and-a-half. The Pack 'n Play is usually set up on the landing area. Two baby gates are ready to set at the top or bottom of the stairs to keep your toddlers or dogs safe. The dog fee is $10 per dog per day. No fee for children still in school.

The house is one block off Main Street, 4.1 miles from Shepherdstown, West Virginia, 10 miles from Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and 13 miles from Hagerstown, Maryland. Harpers Ferry is about 14 miles the house. Gettsyburg National Military Park is about one hour from Sharpsburg.
The house is within walking distance to casual and fine dining and the famous Nutters Ice Cream Shop. The house is 1.7 miles from the Potomac River and the C&O Canal and towpath. Bikers have an up-hill ride from Snyders Landing to Chapline Street (1.5 miles) and a down-hill coast for the final two blocks to Antietam Guest House. The half-acre lot offers plenty of room for outside activity.
The house and location are perfect for weekend getaways and family vacations. Three levels offer privacy and convenience at the same time. The downstairs level features a 'living' rock wall foundation and a 'candleplace,' the stone fireplace transformed to hold real candles for the feel of a fire and romance without ashes and soot. The cable TV and DVD player with a selection of DVDs, board games, and a piano are on this level for your entertainment. Check out books and other materials from the local library using

Close to everything
Wonderful home close to many attractions in western Maryland. It’s any easy drive into Harper’s Ferry, Sherpardstown, and it’s walking distance to the battlefield of Antietam. Check out Little Brick Coffee in the morning and if you enjoy wine visit Antietam Creek Winery. The house itself was like a trip to past with all the modern conveniences. It was very clean and despite being in town it was also very quiet. Thanks, we’ll definitely be back!

Historic (Modernized) Antietam Guesthouse
I think this is a nice little property for a very small group. The best part of the guesthouse is its central location in the surrounding historical area. Hagerstown, largest town with abundance of services is minutes away. Harpers Ferry is a short pleasant drive through gorgeous countryside. Frederick is closeby. Gettysburg is merely an hour ride, by car that is. Shepherdstown, WV is a stones throw away. The house is historic. it was comfortable. Being a big city kid, I was a little uneasy with the latch that kept the basement door closed, but Sharpsburg is a quiet little hamlet, so security was not a big deal. If you know you are renting an 166 year old home, then you are satisfied. Its quaint. The slanted floors, the steep and painted wood staircase with narrow steps all lend to the idea that you are staying in a house that stood during the Civil War. The house of a C&O canal boat captain. That you are just a second away where men who swore allegiance to the flag fought against each other to rid the union of the peculiar institution. If you keep in perspective the place, the events, and the outcome that changed the lives of millions, then you will appreciate this little house.

The perfect house in the perfect location
Tracing my great grandfather’s service in the union army brought me to Sharpsburg. The Antietam Guest House was of the period and the furnishings as well. It brought the whole experience together. Truly an amazing property in an amazing place. Look forward to staying again. Will recommend to all

Lovely historic home
We enjoyed staying in this lovely home so close to the Antietam battlefield. It was full of charm and historical features/decorations. I think the rock wall in the basement along with the candle fireplace were some of our favorite features, despite so many others to choose from. I was worried about such an old house in the middle of summer, but the fans and ac units kept the house a very comfortable/cool temperature even in the middle of a heat wave. An short walk to Nutters ice cream was also a nice way to beat the heat, and the outside patio was a lovely place to drink morning coffee before it got too muggy. We look forward to coming back sometime in the Fall when we can spend more time outdoors. While I would say this house is fine for families and can sleep quite a few people with the pull out couches, I would not recommend it for those with toddlers or young hyper children given the old style staircases, lack of room to run around inside, and fragile historical items in the house. It was perfect for our quiet escape sans kids, and would be nice when our kids get a little older.

History and quaintness
We very much enjoyed our stay at this historic house tucked into neighborhood off the main street in Sharpsburg and adjacent to a farm. We especially liked sitting on the front porch overlooking the street and fire company across the street while enjoying our morning coffee. The house had everything that we needed for a wonderful visit. The yard was great for our two small dogs.

Perfect Family Vacation
We loved staying at the Antietam Guest House. The owners are avid historians. Really neat to read their published book on Sharpsburg. The house was fully equipped with all the comforts of home. The location allowed us to accomplish epic day trips to Hershey PA, 2 hr drive (one day), DC (another day, we drove to Shady Grove Metro Station, parked and took Metro to into DC). Our final day we explored Harper's Ferry, C&O canal and Antietam Battlefield. Only wish we had one more day to relax and take advantage of the books, games, movie collection and downstairs. Highly recommend this VRBO.

A Battlefield Gem
This historic house was a silent witness to the great Battle of Antietam in 1862, and it's now available as a comfortable, much-loved, well provisioned guest house. The hosts are caring and involved, and the property equipped for comfort, peace, and quiet. Perfect for hikers/bikers on the C&O canal, visitors to the National Battlefield, or city folk wanting a small-town getaway. I'm sure to stay here every time I'm in the area!

Antietam/ C&O Canal
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the house was what I had expected. The check-in was not a problem and the communications with the property owner was easy and straightforward. My only issues were that the shower and drain board at the kitchen sink needed to be cleaned. It wasn’t a deal breaker and I would stay there again.

THIS is what VRBO is all about!
From the moment I booked our stay, the owners were prompt to respond to me and provide good information in advance. The home has been lovingly maintained and was just the experience I had hoped for. The proximity to Antietam National Battlefield was perfect. I selected this home as a "surprise" for my husband's birthday and it did not disappoint. We were traveling with our 15 year old dog who did not take to the stairs in the home very well (they are steep and short which guests are warned about) but the owners thoughtfully included pet/baby gates to avoid any misstep. Very positive experience.
