A deal
A great deal for the price. A little out dated and worn, but still functional. Bathroom had a nice tub, which was the first we’ve seen in Vietnam. Ac worked well

Hotel close to the centre.
I had a good experience, the stuff is very friendly and helpful, the ubicación is great as it is close to the centre.
Photos in ad seem to be fake. My room looked nothing like the photos and I suspect none of the rooms do because the building interior seems completely run down not modern like photos suggest. The room was filthy eg the lamp on the roof was covered in grey grime. Generally unpleasant and uninviting. To get to rooms you had to walk through a darkened stairwell which was very foreboding. And the place seemed almost desserted.
We made a hotel reservation and paid online and received a confirmation both from hotels.com and the hotel itself. However upon the arrival they told us they had forgotten the check the online bookings and the hotel was full. We were transferred to another hotel, where we had to pay for the room separately. After a long discussion the staff member promised that she would sort out the matter, but apparently she did not and we ended up paying twice. To be avoided.
Kangaroo Hostel is a nice place, accessible to all the places you want to. The room is nice and clean. The staff is very warm and welcomes you with a smile. They are friendly, approachable and accommodating. Additional to that, you will be entertained with the kid who loves to laugh and make friends with you. I recommend to everyone to book into this place and you will not regret it.

Great Hostel for Travellers and Backpackers
The Kangeroo Hostel staffs was very helpful, patient, friendly and pleasant. Both did helped us with our taxi and train bookings, gave us a map to explore the city of Hanoi, explain and clarify tours and attraction in Hanoi. It was a great experience.
It would be better if they provide a kettle/boil hot water for us to prepare our meals and drinks upon request.
Great location and price. Staff are super friendly and very helpful. Easy to book tours to Sapa and Halong bay, and at competitive prices

no so good
don't perfer stay in 2nd floor, it's very noisy.
you can hear people walking down the stairs . this hotel have a baby,it cry all days and very annoying
The plusses first, the hotel is located in the heart of the old quarter so everything is within walking distance. Also the tour we did through Halong Bay which was recommended by the hotel was awesome.
Then the negatives, when we arrived our room was not ready as they had let someone stay late, they had our flightdetails and arranged our pick up at the airport, but we still had to wait another 2 hours before the room was ready. Our double room was a twin and they just pushed the beds together. It was a very cold weekend but the hotel provides no heating in the room and there is no warm common area to relax either. The heatpump/aircon machines in the pictures don't even work, half of them don't have remote controls.
The rooms are very damp as the showers don't have any ventilation and because it is that cold after you shower the bathroom stays wet until they clean the room. The hairdryers seem to all be hidden in 1 room so if your unlucky dont count on them finding one.

Moved to another hotel
I booked a stay with this hotel on the day I wanted to stay. I turned up and found that they had not checked the web bookings, and had given the last room to someone else. They were kind enough to put me into a sister hotel chain. This hotel room looked nothing like in the pictures. Given I was there for one night and just wanting a place to sleep, this wasn't a huge problem for me.
They are lovely people, and honest. I felt I could trust them.
I wasn't experienced with hotels, so for 8 USD a night it was good, but for me I had to upgrade
The staffs here make all the difference. So friendly! They helped me arrange for my adventure trips out of Hanoi upon my arrival and provided tips and directions to the various locations. It's insightful chatting with them every day.
The egg & coffee breakfast is just right prior to stepping out for an whole day of exploring. One day the staff even got me to taste some of their own local breakfast favourite, which was steamed in some fragrant leaves and tasted wonderful!
Didn't feel like a business; more family-ish and inviting. Plus the hostel is right in the midst of action, follow the road and direction of the traffic and you will reach Hoen Kiam lake in a few minutes. Serious bang for the bucks and than some if you're travelling on a budget.
Oh and don't forget to High-Five the cute cute baby (Ha Phung?) at the lobby!
I broke a tooth because a stone was in the bread...cost me 500.000 dong to get pulled out..the internet did not work at any time...and 3 times they told me that they would change my room...but in the morning a new staff was there and they dident...overall I was not happy
Internet in hotel so unstable...broke a tooth because there was a stone in the bread one morning...cost me 500.000 to get pulled out..if i had it fixed i would have to go 5 times to dentest at least costing 4.000.000... the hotel dident even seem sorry...If you need a BED for ONE night ok...otherwise I would stay away
