Whilst there are better hotels in other parts of HCMC, Trung Mai is a decent place to stay, where staff speaks Cantonese and some English, besides Vietnamese. The room reminds me of 1990s hotels in Asia, basic and not modern, but clean, with decent bedding and quiet from street noise, which to us was the most important. There does not seem to be a breakfast option, but standard food can be ordered in the room at reasonable prices. Within walking distance of Thien Hau temple and 10-15min walk from Binh Tay market (closed for renovations between Nov.16 and Nov
17) and St Xavier church, it is also a convenient base to explore Cholon area. We would consider staying back for the overall convenience but keeping in mind the outdated look and feel.
