Great Cabin in the High Peaks Region
My wife and I spent five days in Carrabassett Valley to hike and explore the High Peaks region. We focused our adventures on hiking the 4,000 foot peaks at Saddleback, Crockers/Redington, and Sugarloaf/Spaulding. We also checked out the Narrow Gauge Trail and the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, which look like great mountain bike destinations. The cabin was perfectly located for this kind of adventuring. The trailheads were also very quiet compared to the White Mountains or Adirondacks.
The space is beautiful and comfortable with lots of windows, a cozy dining area, comfy couch and chairs, and tasteful art and lighting. The king bed in the master offered both of us a good night's sleep. We cooked all our breakfasts and about half our dinners and found the kitchen was well equipped and easy to find what we needed.
Restaurants in the area are good but not great. We had fun beer and burritos at Rolling Fattys, a fine dinner at Longfellows - both in Kingfield. We also had a good meal in Rangeley after a hike, which was an hour away. Grocery options are basic, but we found what we needed at the local stores.
Only criticisms are trivial - a little bit of road noise (nothing disturbing our sleep or enjoyment), not much in the way of landscaping, and the road coming off of the main highway was easy to miss (I drove by it at least 3 or 4 times).
Five stars - highly recommended for an outdoor getaway.
