Kumamon Details
Booked the Kumamon themed room. Thought it would be a bit more better detailed to charge extra. The room detail on bed and table were nice. The Kumamon mug cups were nice too. But the bathroom was lacking in detail other than the shower curtain, that felt lazy. Maybe put more Kumamon details in the bathroom area and entry way. The twin room with extra bed also felt small. Very low to the ground and uncomfortable.
This was a launching point to visit Takachiho Gorge abs Mt Aso. So thankfully we were out most of the time. If u are travelling as a couple, pls do not book the Standard Double room. The savings is NOT worth it. Better go for the Standard Twin. It was so crammed without even a side table and a lamp fixed on the headboard which your head would have a little accident with if 2 pax slept on the bed.
I think the location is ok. It’s close to some of the major attractions and shopping belts, but I would prefer to be either closer to the Kumamoto station as there are more shopping there is that is your thing. Otherwise it’s a short tram ride there from your hotel. But it’s the size that made me drop my rating for this. Should not market the room for 2 pax. Apparently there is parking onsite, but as u was driving a SUV, there is not enough headroom to get in. So I had a discounted off site parking which was about 10mins walk away and next to a mall with a bus interchange.

Room size was typical. Good for one person but pushing it for two people.
Toiletries were slightly dated and showing age.
It's a nice and clean hotel in heart of Kumamoto. Just few minutes walk to the castle and some nearby attractions. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful through check-in & check-out. Hotel is very clean & tidy all around. Rooms are not spacious but similar to any hotel in main cities in Japan, it's reasonable.
Hotel room is clean, good wifi, spacious with amentities available for pick up at level 1 lobby. 3 tram stop away from kumamoto station and near shopping walking street with wide range of food choices.
Good: Close to food shops. Easy checkin with english speaking receptionist. Decent choice of breakfast options. Lots of covid awareness. Eg gloves and barriers when eating breakfast. Liquid cleaner in room. Bad: small room. No place to store luggage in room. No small hand towels.
It was overall a good experience. The staff were friendly and the rooms lived up to standard. It was clean and tidy when I checked in. I just wished that there’s a button to activate the ventilation fan in the bathroom. It got incredibly steamy when I took shower at night, which made it hard to breathe. The air-conditioner was also limited to heating only. I need an air conditioner to sleep well but the staff told me that it wasn't available during particular seasons. One last thing to note is that the walls are quite thin. I was able to hear conversations from other rooms and it was considerably noisy in the morning when the cleaners were vacuuming the carpet. I’d stay here again for the price point that this hotel offers.

For reference, we went when some of the COVID-19 restrictions were still in place.
We arrived on a rainy day. Hotel staff greeted us outside with umbrellas and carried in our luggage.
The hotel lobby was equipped with hand sanitizers, face masks, and they checked our temperature. Due to restrictions the usual morning buffet was suspended. They had 2 food options which were both great. Before entering the restaurant, we were required to do another temperature check.
The rooms were amazing. Having a 5 year old we chose the Kumamon room and it was a hit. The room was also equipped with a bottle of hand sanitizer and special bags to dispose of used masks.
Staff was completely friendly and professional. Spoke enough English to understand each other.
We can’t wait to stay there again.
