Riverfront Cattle Farm Home in the Mountains

Welcome to Iola Farms! This is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home nestled in a picturesque valley on 106 acres just on the north side of Bristol, VA. There are plenty of activities to do such as hiking, fishing, swimming and tubing. You can visit the cattle from a safe distance or relax and read a book while listening to the sounds of the river and cattle. There is over a mile of river frontage to explore with the fishing pole, or you can break out the swim gear and go tubing from one end of the property to the other.

The master bedroom has a queen size bed suitable to sleep 2. One bedroom has a bunk bed with a full-size bottom bunk and a twin-size top bunk suitable to sleep 3. The other bedroom has a full-size bed, suitable to sleep 2. The living room has a pull-out couch suitable for 1 adult or 2 children.

Full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, dishware and cooking utensils. Kitchen table seats 6- 8. Patio table on the porch with 4 chairs and grill.

We have Directv Television with DVR, as well as Satellite High Speed Wireless Internet and WIFI. Currently there is no land line. The only cellular signal that works out here is through Verizon. Other cellular services can be connected through the WIFI.

Master bath has a removable shower head, 2 vanities/sinks. Guest bath has a tub with shower and single vanity. Linens, towels, sheets and blankets are provided. There is a full-size washer and dryer.

The property is hidden over a ridge, so after you crest the driveway, you will be pleasantly surprised by the amazing views. The driveway is dirt/gravel with some bumps, so you'll need to take it slow and easy. Cars that are low to the ground are not recommended. SUV's and Subaru type vehicles will not have any problems. This is an active cattle farm so there are cows and may be caretakers on the property. During the spring, summer and fall you can enjoy most of the riverfront without being disturbed by the wandering cattle. The river is fenced off along the entire property with several points to access the river. The cattle are not pets. Do not try to pet or feed them. You can drive from one end of the property to the other to picnic, swim, hike, watch birds or take in the views of the mountains.

The property is 45 minutes from the Bristol Motor Speedway, 40 minutes from Abingdon where the famous Barter Theatre and Virginia Creeper Trailhead are located. The Carter Family Fold is about 20 minutes away. And the famous Devil's Bathtub and waterfall is also about 40 minutes away. The nearest convenient store is about 15 minutes away.

Great peaceful getaway
House was very clean. Great secluded location. Loved seeing the cows and their babies. No cell service in area, but satellite wifi at house is very good. Bring muck boots to walk property to avoid stepping in poo. Bring food with you, not much in area to purchase food and drink. It is within 45 minutes of The Devil's Bathtub, Natural Tunnel State Park, Appalachian Caverns, & Bass Pro Shop.

Peaceful Country Retreat
We wanted a relaxing stay off the beaten path and we got it. Kids loved seeing the cows and enjoying the lazy river. Quaint small town nearby, with a great experience at the Carter Family Fuld and a short drive to Natural Tunnel State Park.

Holiday weekend in Mendota
This farmhouse was a nice rural setting where you can really get away from it all. We found the isolation peaceful, but it was only a 10 mile drive to civilization. Be advised that you need to be careful when walking around the property about ticks. If you do that then you can wander around on this farm to pick blackberries or wade or float in the river at the bottom of the hill. The house was well-equipped and supplied.

Very relaxing!
So many great things about this property...the first--it was spotlessly clean! Plenty of towels, soap for the dishes, everything needed to live there for several days. The location is very secluded, for 95% of our time the cattle were our only neighbors. We loved the peace and quiet! We enjoyed fishing, caught several bass. (don't eat them due to warnings of toxicity). Out dog enjoyed the fenced yard & got plenty of exercise. We would definitely return in the future. All aspects as advertised in the property description--driveway is steep up and down. We did fine in a Ram 1500 4 WD truck. I would not want to drive a car up & down it. We have Spectrum cell service so we had to drive several miles to access it. We did connect through WIFI & were able to text elderly family members that way, to keep in touch. Due to the wifi restrictions we had minimal internet connection. Direct TV was available & had many channels. I highly recommend this place if you don't mind seclusion and giving up internet for your time there.

Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival
We had a great stay consistent with what one would expect of a beautiful rural farm in the mountains! As advertised, the driveway might give some pause at first but with ground clearance and taking it slow all is fine. The property is beautiful and we enjoyed walking to a nice slow part of the river to wade in and tube. The accomodations are as advertised and served all we needed. Our dog enjoyed the fenced in yard. Also as advertised, the cell phone reception is almost non-existant. The internet provided help to do the basics of email or mapping a location on GPS but nothing beyond that. We had a manageable 35 minute drive in to downtown Bristol for the festival. Would happily stay again if we find ourselves in a similar situation. Thanks!

A Piece of Heaven
If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful vacation look no further. This location is perfect for a getaway in the mountains with beautiful views, a fun float down the river, and roaming the property with the cows. The house was clean and stocked with anything you could think of - down to a dog bin in case you ran out of supplies. Owners are very responsive and accommodating to anything we needed. Will absolutely be making this a yearly trip!

Mountain High
This is a wonderful place to get away from it all and still be close to shopping and activities. Beautiful scenery. The river was cool and refreshing. Loved floating down the river from one end of the property to the other. Watching the cattle was interesting. We didn't bother them and they didn't bother us. We did have to ask them to MOOOOOVE every once in a while if they happened to be by a gate but they didn't mind. Property owners responded almost immediately when I messaged them on VRBO with questions. There are actually to houses on the property within walking distance and my cousins stayed in the cabin while we stayed in the big house. I would recommend this property to one and all.

Beautiful solitude
Lovely house with all the amenities. Beautiful surroundings... peaceful and rejuvenating. The stars and lightning bugs at night with a background serenade of frogs and crickets was beyond lovely. The shallow river was a delight for our family (and our dogs) with fairly simple access. The cows and calves in the surrounding fields were entertaining. Nice location that is within drivable distance to numerous sites/activities. Well stocked with any/all necessities & they even had a kennel to use for the dogs. The only downside is the driveway. They are not exaggerating the description of the driveway! It is pretty steep & there are several large bumps/divets/dips that a lower car will have issues passing. We averaged a speed of 1-5mph on the driveway. We had a midsize SUV & a Scion & the Scion barely cleared the bumps. The top of the drive will freak you out a little at first - but the view from there is awesome! Would definitely stay again & my oldest (21) even said she would like to stay there with a group of friends in the future.
