Your Tropical Beach Vacation!

IMPORTANT: First things first.

HOW TO GET THERE: Today you can take a direct flight to North Andros on Maker's Air (www.makersair.com) or Aztec Air (www.flyaztec.com) from Fort Lauderdale avoiding any change-overs, or you can fly to Nassau and take the quick 15 minute flight to North Andros. The latter requires a taxi to General Aviation, a stones throw from the Nassau Airport. Best is to contact the owner who will help connect you with a pilot in advance and answer any of your questions or concerns. Expect to pay the pilot from General Aviation ~ $100 each passenger. There are other options that have evolved, again, best to contact the owner in advance. Currently Western Air's schedule to the island from Nassau is reduced. (www.westernair.com)

Once there! Exhale and take a mad dash into the warm, clear Caribbean waters. Pleasant Dreams is located in Pleasant Harbor on the northeast side of North Andros in a beautiful, small, wonderfully private cove. Surely your first impression will be of the ocean views seen through the house, and the tropical flora, carpet grass, palms and seagrape that welcomes you. This home is very secluded with 400 feet of private beach, the perfect place to launch one of many activities including beach combing, paddle boarding, kayaking, DIY bone fishing, snorkeling or just floating in the crystal-clear waters or walking the white sandy beach.

Before you go it is important to understand that Andros is known as an 'Outer or Family Island' that holds a special place in the heart of many Bahamians. Though there are a few resorts hidden away mostly on the south end of the island, it has escaped tourist development making this the spot to truly unwind, relax, replenish and reconnect with, or enjoy family and friends without the distractions of the commercialism on many island resorts. It is a very safe island with very friendly residents happy to share their island. Welcome to Andros is a phrase you will hear.

Known as the eco-tourism destination of The Bahamas because of it's large pristine, terrestrial and marine ecosystems, Andros is home to the third longest barrier reef in the world within a 15 minute boat ride from the house making it a spectacular diving, snorkeling and fishing destination. Bone fisherman have always enjoyed the easy access to the flats, known as the Joulters, where they can bring the whole family.

The beach out front has a large and shallow sandy area that is great for small children. At low tide you can walk out quite a ways. Adults who like to swim, float on chairs or just relax in the sun will also find this a perfect spot. For the adventurous, deeper waters and snorkeling are just a short swim out. There are several small reefs (easy to snorkel on) right off the beach where you can try your hand at spearing lobster in season, collect conch, fish or snorkel for many kinds of reef fish. Charley can take a group to reefs farther out to spear fish and lobster and see an amazing spectacle of tropical fish on a coral reef while also bringing home a cooler of fresh fish. At low tide you might enjoy the 4 mile round trip beach walk to Money Point to look out over the flats toward Lowe Sound.

Andros is also an excellent place to go for bird watching. There are more than 300 species of birds found in the Bahamas. 109 species breed in the Bahamas - including the rare and endangered Bahama Oriole that breeds next to the house -169 species migrate or winter here, and 45 species are vagrants. We have discovered lists of birds observed by birding guests.

There are local convenience stores scattered about a short drive away where you can pick up food, fresh bread and liquor. The Mennonite farm stand in season (Nov - April) offers two sizes of boxes you can chock full of a variety of fresh veggies, which in season we highly recommend. Many guests have enjoyed local home-cooked Bahamian fare prepared and brought to the house by Judy Miller - one of the caretakers. Some quests check a bag full of specialty foods (peanuts, cheddar cheese, soft tortillas, quinoa, energy bars, good coffee ) not available on the island to enhance food offerings.

The master bedroom off a screened in porch has a king size bed with a small private bath with shower. The main house has two bedrooms, one bedroom with an ocean view and king size bed and the other with three twin beds (that can be coverted to a king and one single). The bath in the main house has a tub/shower combination. There is also an outdoor shower that many prefer!

The Kitchen has all the modern necessities with stainless steel tables and open shelving, gas stove, coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, and a full refrigerator. The Living Room/Dining Room is pleasantly furnished with a large Andros Pine dining room table, beach house rattan living room furniture, a TV/DVD player and a supply of movies. WIFI is available along with Bluetooth speakers along with a variety of games and books.

Few businesses takes credit cards but that is slowly changing (rental car owner now taking them), travelers checks can be a problem (not everyone takes them or they charge you extra to use them). Cash is the best thing to bring for money including small bills to tip baggage handlers along the way. There is an ATM on the island that you can access if you need more cash; it is located a couple of miles from the house. (update 7/24/23 - the ATM cannot be relied on)

Several small family restaurants serving local food can be found including a very popular smoke house - more up to date information on local establishments, including telephone numbers will be shared with you after booking and often guests leave or update info. You can go to Red Bays to shop for the local baskets and woodcarvings created by the people of the island. or to Fresh Creek, where you'll find the Androsia Batik Factory which makes beautiful Batik clothing using intricate carved Sea Sponges from the island. Explore the limestone caves or dive into Bill's Blue Hole, go bird, sea turtle or hermit crab watching. But mostly, Andros is known for its Bonefishing, Snorkeling, Diving, Shelling, Fishing, relaxation and beautiful beaches. It's the best place to shut off and exhale.

A word about bugs given that Pleasant Dreams is in the tropics. There are bugs in the tropics, especially after heavy rain! We spray around the house periodically balancing our need for our guests to be comfortable and our concern for the environment. During the day when you are out and about enjoying the beach you are unlikely to encounter any, but around dusk, especially when there is no breeze, you are likely to encounter the no-see-em. There are various insect repellants there and now that the FAA has lifted the 3 ounce limit on fluids, we would suggest bringing your favorite brand. We also ask for your own comfort to keep the screens closed at all times. It’s hard to predict who they will bother as the majority of guests never bring it up, but please be aware. Also - don't forget your sunscreen!

Bahamian Getaway
This is an ideal spot to stay to experience a rural Bahamian island. Not a lot of restaurants and retail close by but an opportunity to explore all the natural wonders the Bahamas has to offer. Situated on a beautiful cove providing access to snorkeling, fishing and lobstering. A couple of blue holes close by to explore and swim when the weather is warm. We will return.

Vacation memories to last a lifetime
I am not sure where to start. The house, the island and the people were all amazing. We had the absolute best time. Working with Stephen was so seamless and easy. He provided so much detail, helped with any question we had, and he is so kind and generous for allowing others to stay in his home. The location is beautiful. What a way to wake up and start your day. He had absolutely everything you could need and more. Our kids used the kayak and paddle boards, there are chairs for the beach and an umbrella, fishing gear and more. I cannot say enough good things about Stephen and the house. The best bonus of all- Judy and Charlie. They are so warm and kind. Knowing them was the highlight of our trip. Charlie took us snorkeling and caught dinner for us. We arranged to have Judy make dinner a few nights, and it was delicious. We went to several blue holes, visited Morgan’s Bluff, went to Red Bays and Androsia, went snorkeling and even swam with sea turtles. We found a restaurant on the way to Morgan’s Bluff- Below Deck Beach Bar & Grill. Kizzie makes the best conch fritters and fries and has the coldest beers. I could go on for hours. We cannot wait to go back.

Perfect beach
We visited with our 3 small children and my parent’s and had the best week. The beach and home were absolutely perfect for our group of 7. We spent the week exploring the shallow bay, spotting many turtles, and just enjoying the location. The low tide shallow bay was excellent for our small children and all the adults also enjoyed wading far out. The owner, Steve, was one of the best VRBO hosts we have had and was excellent with communication ahead of time and also while there when needed. We enjoyed a delicious meal by the housekeeper Judy and highly recommend! There was no working ATM during our visit and not everywhere accepts credit so make sure to plan ahead with cash. We really enjoyed not only the location but every person we met on the island was kind and welcoming. We hope to be back and make it out on a boat excursion next time to explore more of the reef!

We had an amazing time between Christmas and New Year’s at this home. It’s very quiet and peaceful, and a great place to go and unplug. You’re in good hands with Stephen-he was very helpful and accommodating to us throughout our entire trip. One suggestion-be sure you bring enough cash with you to Andros. The only places we found that accepted credit cards are grocery stores. And the ATM on the island isn’t always operational. We highly recommend staying here when you decide you need some time away from the craziness of every day life.

Little paradise!
Steve was great to deal with and provides so much information! The house is in a private cove and we were lucky enough to walk with juvenile sea turtles every morning. Charlie (this man does it all!) took us out to see the reefs, caught us lobster and referred another local, Bubu, to cook us up a 3 course meal with them! It was the most delicious lobster I've ever had. *but bring lots of cash!* They live quite different down there. Bring your favorite snacks as they may not be available on the island. Definitely rent a car and go see the blue holes! The locals are SO nice... they'll wave to you and help you get where you're going. The Smokehouse is the fairest priced restaurant we found with the most delicious food. Charlie's sister runs the place and they have the best conch shrimp chowder around! Go see the fruit stand in Nicholstown for fresh produce. It's worth it to have the internet package on your phone for GPS around the island but it gets easy to manage as you learn the town layout. I wish I never had to come home! Definitely worth the $!

private beach on a private cove
The VRBO was clean and comfortable and totally private. We waded the entire cove of crystal clear water. No waves, no seaweed. totally dark skies at night. A perfect secluded getaway with kayaks and paddleboards for a family or couple. Our footprints the only ones ever there. Everything but food provided by a great host. Having a vehicle a must. Near Morgan's cave and the blue holes.

Perfectly Peaceful and Amazing!
We had the perfect trip! The house is wonderful! Fully equipped with everything you need. Very comfortable and very clean. The beach in the back is awesome! Spent time kayaking and swimming - saw several turtles and the shell hunting was GREAT! The house is perfectly set up for families or 2 couples (as we were) with plenty of room. There are plenty of restaurants around and the grocery stores were surprisingly well stocked (sometimes hard to find on islands). Charlie, the caretaker, was wonderful and gave us a tour of the local area including some history of the place and the house. His son, CJ, took us snorkeling to 2 blue holes, found some turtles and snorkeled on 2 reefs. The stars were stunning! I can't imagine a more perfect week! HIGHLY recommended!

BEST BAHAMA VACATION EVER!
We have visited may homes in the Bahamas, but for the price range we can afford, this has been the best one, for so many reasons: 1) Steve, the owner, is outstanding to work with. Always available to answer questions, and to give you the right contacts, whether if it is for car rentals, guide services, or private charter services. He really loves sharing his place and having others enjoy their stay. 2) The beach is OUTSTANDING. Very sandy and low for quite a distance, but very swimmable at high tide ! Good snorkelling very close to the beach. You can walk on the beach for over an hour, and most often, have it all to yourself. 3) the locals are very friendly and helpful. 4) Steve has 4 bikes & kayaks and other water toys - all at no extra charge ! WE loved biking, kayaking, and snorkelling every day. 5) No need to go to any other beaches or drive for anything else - you have it all in North Andros. 6) The blue holes on the island are way overrated - have Charlie take you out on the water, and he will show you amazing blue holes ! 7) I would definitely love to come back again!

Nice house, great beach. Steve was wonderful to work with. It was great meeting the caretaker Charlie and his family. North Andros has the nicest people. Perfect Location for Family!
When we first saw Stephen's place on VRBO we knew it would be a perfect place to stay to explore Andros! We weren't quite sure how we were going to get there or what the logistics were, but Stephen explained everything in detail. With his welcome packet, but he is also reachable by phone easily! The place was amazing, we did our best to explore, but honestly we were happiest just being at this spot. The beach in front was always calm, clear, and shallow so it was great for little kids. There was plenty to explore along the shoreline as well. The kitchen was well stocked so we brought some food with us and ended up cooking several meals at the place. And the breeze was amazing too. We never even needed to turn on the ac as the sound of the ocean and the breeze coming through in the evening made for a perfect sleeping scenario. Don't let the logistics of getting to Andros steer you away! It is WORTH IT!

Pleasant dreams of a blue sky on a sandy, turquoise bay
Pleasant Dreams is a perfect island getaway looking out on an idyllic bay with easy wading/swimming off a coral sand beach! From booking, to preparing for travel, to your actual stay at his beachside bungalow - Steve has thought of everything for a secluded, private yet comfortable stay! He has clearly set this house up with the comforts that he desires, but willing to share these amenities with his guests. Steve’s guidance and communications were top notch, making what could be a difficult stay, an easy stay. This is definitely for the adventurous types or those who want something off the beaten path! What makes Pleasant Dreams stand out is the level of modern comfort in a classic 60s bungalow. The house provides standard modern comfort with a variety of comfortable seating options suited to its location by the sea. Entertainment features include WiFi and TV in- house with an HDMI cable so you access your own internet entertainment offerings if a star filled sky is not enough. For my family of three it is was quite comfortable if underused and we could see it being perfect for a family or small group. Metal commercial kitchen tables and a huge variety of cookware and appliances to accommodate any style of cooking. Nice three burner grill out back finishes it off. For those wanting a little more adventure, we highly recommend taking advantage of Charley the caretaker’s expertise in snorkeling and fishing for a safe day spent on the water. Charley even makes sure you eat well that evening and likely for longer with fresh caught fish and lobster. He is a master of the reefs off shore! Plenty of national park and blue holes inland (Capt Bill’s in the National Park) to be explored if you have the time and are willing to seek them out (a guide might be recommended if you want to really see what is out there). Make no mistake, Andros Island is a quasi-remote destination for the lover of beach and sea. You don’t come here for restaurants and night life, you come here for the beautiful seascape and welcoming people. Also Pleasant Dream’s is great for the at-home cook wanting to spend their meal time on the freshest caught seafood! Most products needed for quality eating at home are available in quaint local stores or for the freshest produce as well as milk and eggs from the Mennonite farm. You will find the people of Andros are very welcoming and helpful. Pleasant Dreams comes highly recommended!

Hidden gem
Pleasant Dreams is a hidden gem in the midst of a redeveloping, environmentally gorgeous island. The house provides an oasis. The beach is lovely, serene and breathtaking. If you like snorkeling, your front yard is literally the tip of the third largest barrier reef in the world. We stayed in August of 2021 and if you’re looking to experience quiet time at the house where you’re able to cook for yourself, it’s perfect. It has what you need. If you’re adventurous and enjoy exploring to find things and are very self-sufficient, this is the place for you. Please note that due to Covid restrictions, the impact Covid has had on the economy, two Hurricanes in the last 3 years and pure Island importing life, things around the island are in disarray. To be honest, we drove through nearly the entire north Andros area to find what “used to be”. Restaurants are few and far between, grocers carry limited supplies, August is not a time where fruits or vegetables are in large supply, gas stations and banks are sparse. Things are expensive. Most buildings are crumbling and you see partial rebuilds from the hurricanes that got halted due to Covid. But!!! And it’s a big but…. The people are wonderful. The natural resources of the island are gorgeous. We snorkeled right outside this rental. We visited two blue holes and swam for hours. We brought binoculars and looked at birds. At home, we swam early morning until the hot sun hit and again later until sunset. We were happy to spend our money putting dollars back into the tourism economy that Andros Island depends on. One day, we hope to return and see the island back to its glory, vibrant in the strength of the buildings painted brightly in the colors that reflect the people that own them. Until then, visitors need to come with patience and a sense of adventure because what you don’t get in modern conveniences is certainly made up for in natural beauty!

Best place to stay on Andros
In the week we were on North Andros we visited many of the communities and beaches. We played in the water. It was too rough to go snorkeling on the big reef. We found 62 species of birds. Mr Samuel Nelson is an excellent source of information about the birds of the island. Because of the wind we only had fish freshly caught by us one day for lunch but that was a great meal. Fresh vegetables were available at the Mennonite farm. We especially liked their strawberries, cabbage and sweet potatoes.

A true gem! Delightful!
We reeeaaaally loved this place. One could not find a more serene and relaxing location than Pleasant Dreams at Morgan's Bluff. The house itself is fantastic - not fancy, but a true, laid back beach house on a lovely, secluded cove with everything you could possibly need. We cannot remember enjoying ourselves as much anywhere. We stayed from Dec. 29, 2019 to Jan. 10, 2020 and it did us wonders. We feel renewed and relaxed. The house is very well laid out with one bedroom and bathroom off away from the others. There are levered windows throughout so you can get a lovely cross-breeze. We got there in the dark and I could hardly believe it the first morning when I opened my eyes to see a lovely palm tree in front of me and then the turquoise ocean a little further out. No vendors, no hassles. Yes, there are "no see'ums" outside but only at dawn and dusk - they do not get in the house AT ALL as long as you keep the screen doors closed. The beach is right in front of you - down a short, lovely path in powdery white sand.... sea grape bushes around, could not be lovelier. The best part was the people of Andros. Friendly, helpful and kind without exception. We felt so relaxed and accepted. Each person we met became a friend. A big shout out to Charley Bowleg, the caretaker, who helped us with all our questions and needs, led us to some great local food and dancing and took my husband bone fishing. Such a good guy. The flights using Glen Pratt were great too. Good, reasonable, local food from Vanessa at Island Comfort - we ate there inside once and got take out at least four times :). We really enjoyed driving all around North Andros, down south as far as you can go. Other great spots to eat are Little Anchor (very casual - be sure to stop across the street at Big Anchor for a cocktail while you wait - bring mosquito repellant) and in the south Brigadiers and Sammy's (also very casual but great food). We were so happy NOT to find sick and starving dogs and cats - the ones we met were healthy and pretty well cared for. This is thanks to a great organization called BAARK that does Spay & Neuter in the Bahamas - we will be sending them a donation - they have prevented so much misery by conducting 11,000 spay and neuters in the Bahamas in the last ten years. Diane Knoll, the lovely neighbor up the road, volunteers for them. So if you want super relaxation, definitely rent this house.

Beautiful beach home on remote out-island
We visited Pleasant Dreams with our 3 small children (6, 3, and 1), and we had an amazing week. The beach is incredibly secluded and the shallow, calm water was perfect for our little swimmers. The sand is so soft that you'll actually sink up to your ankles in some spots! The kids also enjoyed exploring the area on the kayaks, and my daughter even did a little snorkeling on the reef near the point. The house is clean and comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook all our meals for ourselves. A lot of the previous reviews talked about the bugs, and we did walk away with a few mosquito bites, but not enough to negatively impact our enjoyment. We did struggle a little bit with the large biting flies. The bites are painful and the kids really didn't like it. Fortunately, they don't bite for a few seconds after they land, so you have time to swat them off. They also don't show up until later in the afternoon, so we usually took them as our cue to head inside and start making dinner. The one thing that you really need to understand about this property is that it is in a remote part of the Bahamas that does not have a lot of amenities for tourists. While the idea of that might seem charming, it can make parts of the vacation stressful. This area was hit hard by a hurricane (I think Matthew in 2016), and the effects are still visible. There are a lot of buildings that were never repaired, and some businesses didn't reopen. I only gave 4 stars for communication because some of the information that the owner sent us turned out to be outdated. We were able to find a store with groceries, but the selection of food is limited and everything is very expensive. None of this was enough to ruin our vacation, but it is something you need to be realistic about before you go. Finally, I'd strongly recommend going on a snorkel trip with Charley. My wife and daughter went and they still haven't stopped talking about it. My wife has snorkeled a few different places and says this is the best she's ever done. Also, the only sharks we encountered were some small nurse sharks, which are very docile.
