This is a good and affordable location in NYC. We did enjoy the Pizza place, The Chicken, and the cookie places across the street, and there was a CVS right around the corner. This is an older location but has a rustic feel. Please be advised (as noted above) that there are no Elavators. Also, there is a kitty who stays in the hallways. The staff was friendly and the sharable restrooms are great, especially if you are sharing a room and need to shower or use the restroom if the one you have is occupied.
We did not stay. We booked a private bathroom but were given a shared one. (With the entire floor) The toilet had feces on it... The faucet had black mold or mildew.
There was a cat that followed us from the stairs into our bedroom and onto the bed. We left. Nothing about this hotel felt safe and nothing about it was remotely clean or hygienic. I've stayed in hostels that are better.

Liked: Staff & service, amenities
Close to everything, so very walkable. Difficult with car though because there is very little over night parking in the area.
When we arrived it took over 30 min for any one to come to the door we call the desk number seven times and ring the doorbell the desk person was doing something in the laundry room he looked and saw us at the door but came to the door about 20 min later
They do not prove wash rags for your use so bring your own the building is about 80 yeas old and the rooms are very small if you only need a place to sleep it ok the location is great right in the middle of a lot of restaurants and shops and only about 200 yards from the subway trains but I will never stay here again
Really hard to imagine recommending this "hotel" - 309 is really a just hostel to anyone with traveling experience abroad. 309 is really a rough ride - but it woul dbe better IF it had a more honest profile. I booked through Expedia - so it was probably that corporate site's fault, but it's not helping "309". If 309 was advertised as a great hostel/budget option in an amazing location, with absolutely no frills, ambiance, or extras, it would be cool. But it looks like it competes with other new pods and nicer offerings. It is not nice AT ALL but it is cheap. The people working there are VERY nice. But it's the kind of place that makes you wonder about bedbugs. The toilets on my floor (shared) were both backed up first thing on the first morning I stayed in the hotel. That's what I got.
The staff was nice.
Everything I did not like. I was scared. The bathroom was shared. There was a cat meowing in the hall and by my door. It was so creepy. The room was to small.
Like staying in a tenament. Peeling paint, thin walls, broken coffee machine, but it also felt...kind of authentic? Very starving artist, which was cool. BUT the BEST PART is that they have a CAT named BRONX and he is THE SWEETEST.
The location is amazing, it has great access to public transportation. On the other hand, I wish it was cleaner, the room was good size, but the floors were dirty and the bathroom and towels weren’t as clean as in other places.
