Really nice mid-range hotel with a hip, less corporate, more artsy vibe than similar hotels on University Ave. While this part of town is not Berkeley’s prettiest or most scenic, there are some fantastic food and beverage choices within a couple of blocks, and the location is central, with nothing else in town too far away. Staff go the extra mile here to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. For us, that included an unsolicited upgrade despite having booked a non-refundable rate through a third party site. Rooms were very clean, and they have a parking garage next door. Mandatory valet service to use the garage is frustrating, but I couldn’t see the interior layout so it might be necessary in order to accommodate the cars. Both solo travelers and couples will feel safe and comfortable here. Rooms are really nicely laid out with an efficient use of space, good TVs, blackout shades, and comfy beds. The bathrooms are beautiful and spacious. The roof deck is a nice extra in good weather, but we couldn’t figure out how to light the gas fireplaces up there.
