Smell of feces
I always check reviews before booking hotels and they were all good for Hotel Ottuma. I knew it was an older hotel which did not bother me because all the reviews were so positive. The bed slept comfortably and the breakfast was good. The water took some time to get hot. But, the big complaint I have is this...My sister and I were sitting at the little table eating a meal and I smelled something atrocious. It was the chair I was sitting on! It smelled like feces!!! I went down to the front desk and told the girl and asked that it be removed and replaced. She was surprised/shocked. I told her it was undeniable. It was taken care of but no offer of compensation for the room. I should have insisted. Ecoli is no joke.

Great old hotel with lots of characters and charm. Situated in downtown made it convenient to walk around. Great breakfast choices include with our stay was a great bonus. Would recommend if you were staying in Ottumwa.

Check in was fast and easy, got an upper floor with a nice view, room was much bigger than I had expected. The lobby cafe was a really cute touch to the hotel and definitely created a vibe going through there. The staff members were all very pleasant and went above and beyond during my stay and made me feel very safe and comfortable. Might be an older hotel in Ottumwa but definitely worth staying at.

The front desk gal was very nice. The property is really neat! Breakfast was SO GOOD! Homecooked, not fake eggs and bacon. The room cooled down well, we visited during warm weather. However, I sat down to use the bathroom when we first entered our room and a roach ran across the floor. My sons comforter had strings of hair all over it as if that had not been changed but the sheets and pillows were clean. I think it may depend on the staff because in the morning I know the cleaning lady cleaned the room across the hall from us very well, I watched her bring out all the sheets and comforters, she spent a good 40 minutes in that room. Overall, it was an ok experience but the place really is neat.
