The Vicar's Tower has a long history going back to the Middle Ages.
At that time it belonged to the noble and powerful Ubaldini family and acted both as military defense and as a manor house collected to the nearby Palazzo dei Capitani.
The term Vicar has any religious significance.
The Vicar was the strongman in charge of the Florentine Republic to administer justice and collect taxes, remaining in power for maximun six months.
The tower dominates with its original stone walls the current Strigelli Place, onec the arms square of the ancinet " Castrum Palazoli" ,already mentioned in 1381.
Palazzuolo was one of the strongholds of various powerful families such as the Eschini, the Pagani and the Ubaldini but in 1373 ,after a long siege and battles, the estate came under the influence of Florence and
therefore of the Medici family.
Near the Vicar's Tower one can see the Palazzo dei Capitani .
On its outside walls one can still see various coats of arms belonging to the Captains who succeeded each other in the assignement.
This buiding currently houses the Tourist Office and two little trasures that we highly recommend to visit:
The Mountain People's Museum and the Archeological Museum of the Upper Mugello.
