Quiet Rainforest Mountain House near Volcano Arenal. Next to Hot Springs resort

Your own Costa Rican private hilltop house located 20 minutes from the town of La Fortuna and Volcano Arenal. The Chachagua rainforest and ECO lodge next door is hidden under the trees , they just changed their pool area into hot springs .our house does not have a pool but so far the resort has allowed free access to their hot springs for our guests . We just brought New WiFi in as well as Air conditioners .This beautiful retreat is about 2 and 1/2 hours from San Jose (main airport) and about 3 hours from the Pacific beaches. This well-built ,fully equipped and locally decorated home sits on a hill overlooking its own tropical fruit and flower garden. Just beyond the exotic garden are beautiful horse pastures, a whitewater river and the jungle of the federally protected Children’s Eternal Rainforest which offers endless hiking trails and birding opportunities. Wake up to the magical sounds of the Costa Rican Rain forest (howler monkeys, gentle rain, and the songs of over 123 species of birds seen on-site). Brew a pot of locally grown fresh Costa Rican Café, and step out onto the large deck to enjoy the 270° view and lounge in one of the 2 hammocks provided. Swim in the spring fed unchlorinated pool at the hotel , sip a Margarita and watch the sunset from the large covered deck , grill some steaks from the local butcher on your little charcoal BBQ and enjoy dinner al fresco listening to the murmur of the creek below . Be surprised how few Moskitos bother you I basically never have to use any Moskito lotion .The house is very bright and well ventilated .I love to sit outside and paint or photograph the birds and flowers around the house .
We also finally after much trial and error have our own good internet in place . I had to pay for them to bring in cable but after much delay it’s here and active . As of May 2023 .

This house is very peaceful and remote yet it has the wonderful feature of being within walking distance to the ecotourist destination Chachagua Rainforest Hotel and Hot springs This unique setting offers total privacy with all the comforts of a first class lodge. The conveniences offered by the hotel include: English-speaking staff on property at all times, cell phones in case of emergencies, night watchman, laundry, restaurant serving delicious local Costa Rican cuisine, fully stocked bar, beautiful outdoor swimming pool, massage therapists, tropical gardens,, access to rain forest hiking trails, rental horses and tours. We consider this to be the best of both worlds: the security and convenience of a hotel yet the quiet remoteness of a private home.

The house has 2 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a nice new king size bed and its own porch with superb views. The guest bedroom has two beds, one queen and one twin. As of 12/2021 upgraded

There is 1 bathroom with beautiful private shower that overlooks rain forest. Colorful hand painted murals cover 2 the living room wall within the house and illustrate forest scenes (done by a talented local artist). There is a great kitchen with all the tools to cook a healthy meal. There is also a family room that opens up to the best porch in the world. The house is an awesome place to relax. Guests can spend countless days just sitting in the hammocks, eating fresh fruit and watching the toucans, parrots, hummingbirds and countless birds that visit the garden at the house.

Over the past 10 years we have planted many fruit trees. Fruits include mangos, oranges, figs, coconuts, rambatans (chinese leechis), guanabanas, tamarindos, bananas, plantains, limes, water apple, coffee, and cacao (chocolate). All ov which is available to you when it is ripe!

Not only is the house a great place to chill out, but it is in an ideal location to use as a home base when you go on adventures.

Things to do in close by La Fortuna are:
Watch lava flow from the crater of Volcano Arenal (one of the most picturesque volcanoes), visit a 100ft waterfall (Catarata La Fortuna), bathe in natural hot springs, fish and windsurf on Lake Arenal, whitewater raft, explore the Volcano Arenal National Park, take a wildlife/bird tour to Cano Negro, go on a caving tour, dine at many restaurants, dance at the local discothèque (Volcan Look), get cool souvenirs, get money from an ATM, or use the internet. Also, you are less then a 4 hour drive to a variety of nice beaches on the Pacific coasts as well as the enchanting cloud forests of Monte Verde. The Caribbean coast is only about 5 hours away.

This stay was our second of three rentals for our 18 day tour of Costa Rica. We loved it! LaFortuna was just 25-30 minutes away which worked well for us. It was great to come back in the late afternoon and walk over to the resort for a nice dinner or enjoy the various pools! What a bonus to this great house. My husband loved feeding the birds in the morning. It was great having coffee with tucans, scarlet macaws and all the various birds. While here we toured the Arenal Volcano, LaFortuna Falls, whitewater rafting with Maquique & Don Gorge Coffee Tour. Great coffee tour but the best part is taking the trail through his back yard to a great waterfall! So be sure to wear your suit on this tour. We practically lived in our swimsuits ❤️🇨🇷

Great place up in the rainforest with daily birds coming to feed on the deck. Wifi was great, super to be able to use the amenities at the resort and hike the trails and surrounding area. Only negative was the check in, but once we were there, it was fantastic and met all of our needs.

Private botanical garden and bird observatory! Just beautiful location, perfect place to return each day to from great day trips. We enjoyed the terrace in early mornings and late afternoons, you have access to the amenities in the adjacent resort, staff there was super friendly and helpful as well. The views, the sounds and the serenity of the place is simply priceless!

This house felt like a home away from home. Loved the location, on top of a hill, and the spectacular view of the rainforest including a ceiba tree which we could easily spot standing above all other jungle vegetation. The garden and fruit trees around the property were another addition to the home’s attraction. Bird watching was a relaxing activity right from our decks. And the free entry to the luxurious hot springs resort, just a few minutes walk was a great benefit. A memorable vacation overall and the “Quiet Rainforest Mountain House” can be given credit for our amazing time in Costa Rica.

Beautiful location
We got stuck in traffic and ended up arriving in the rain after dark. We had a hard time finding the home where the key was, but some kids walking in the rain directed us and the caretakers were outside right away. The home itself is dated but it goes with the rustic vibe. Listening to the sounds of the surrounding ponds and trees was the highlight for us. We could even see toucans from the porch. This home is in a great spot!

Private spot near resort
We had a lot of rain but it was an El Niño year plus rainy season. Luckily, the place had a great deck that overlooked rainforest a two minute walk from a fancy resort. We had access to their pools and restaurant though I’d say when we got there some of the staff didn’t but we were allowed, though the manager and others did. It was a great place to explore the area without the tourist hubbub. The kitchen and grill were good, but we also ate a couple dinners at the excellent restaurant at the resort. Highly recommend Two Monkeys chocolate tour if you come with family. It’s very close. Also, you’ll need 4WD to get up the road from the resort. Otherwise you can park at the hotel lot and walk up.

La Fortuna
The property was exactly as they advertised with a rustic cabin style home on the top of the hill located on the Chachaga rainforest mountain resort property. The space provided ample room for our family of 5 to easily spread out while providing good accommodations for sleeping. The hammocks are a nice touch though make sure to bring bug spray or have candles to help with the pests.

Paradise Found
The house was exactly as advertised. Rustic setting but totally tranquil and 4 nights was perfect. The location gives you a chance to "unplug" and take in the natural beauty of Costa Rica. Every morning and evening was spent on the veranda reading, doing puzzles and watching the birds. We had several toucans come to visit! One of the highlights of our trip was actually the neighboring farms dogs that would run to greet us when we would arrive home and be there in the morning when we'd go out for coffee. It brought something we missed from home to our vacation! The house is 15 to 20 min to La Fortuna, where there is an endless choice of activities and restaurants. Our favorite restaurant was M&M Restaurant, 5 min south on 702 in Chachagua. The nicest family and the best service we've had anywhere! Would highly recommend a visit here.... just come prepared for a rustic disconnected getaway.

No Wifi! If not an issue for you, perfect escape from reality
Look... is this an amazing property? Absolutely. My kids will probably remember and talk about this house for the rest of their lives. Problem was the promise of wifi, and then once there, zero service and no wifi at the house (a 10 min walk down a rustic gravel path to the resort to get service). What could have been my favorite place to stay ever was ruined by this as my husband HAD to be on call and connected for work (yes, sadly even on vacation). It was VERY stressful for him to be unreachable up at the house. No response back from the caretaker concerning the WiFi. We almost had to rebook somewhere else. As everyone has said, pretty tricky to find keys and then the house. Seems like a lockbox up at the property would solve half this issue for guests. The 5 cows were gated into the property during our stay, which was hysterical, and the kids loved having a cow literally peeking in their bedroom window. Negative to this was that they would get up onto the beautiful deck while we were out hiking, and we would come back to giant cow patties and pee all over the porch. No hose, so I had to take a pot from kitchen to porch over and over again to try to make the porch livable for little feet. There has got to be a way to keep the cows off the deck.... while they were charming, it made the most beautiful "room" of the house practically unusable. Get wifi, keep cows off porch, and maybe 1 floor fan per bedroom, and I would honestly have rated this place as one of our all time favorite places ever to stay. Toucans landing right on the porch next to the hammocks in the morning. I so wanted to give this a 5 star rating, but you can't promise wifi then have absolutely no way for people to reach the outside world from the house without trekking down to the resort lodge. The goal was to spend time together as a family, but it ended up being the kids and I together with my husband trekking up and down the hill to the resort just to get service.

House is in unique location, all amenities were as described. Owner surprised us by having fresh flowers and platter of fresh fruit! The stable items were plentiful and available to use. We felt safe at all times and look forward to visiting again. The hotel restaurant provided a delicious breakfast each morning which is included in rental. We also ate dinners at the restaurant and highly recommend it. The food there was some of our favorite while in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!!

Rustic rainforest retreat
We loved the rural setting and the proximity to the Chachagua Rainforest ecolodge. We really enjoyed the many varieties of birds that we fed off of the porch, and the view and serenity were lovely. Ute was very good to deal with, and when her caretaker was unavailable because of an emergency, she made very good alternative arrangements. The pool and the landscaping at the lodge was beautiful and the trails were fun. The house is very rustic though- water pressure was low, the toilet was slow to flush , the temperature range on the stove was interesting, and at times it was a bit warm for sleeping at night even with the fan. All in all , it was good value for the money, felt quiet and serene and was convenient for exploring the area. Thank you!

Amazing stay!
We loved our stay here! The house is very private and nestled in the rainforest. We woke up each morning with toucans on our back porch. It was such a relaxing stay. The restaurant at the eco lodge next store made delicious food and the kitchen was well stocked enough to cook dinner if you didn’t feel like going out. We highly recommend staying here if you are visiting the La Fortuna area!

Rustic and Remarkable
Instead of telling you what a superb time we had here, I'll give you some "head's up" stuff that will help when you do choose this home: The check -in procedure is a bit interesting. The owner has a manager that lives in the area. You pick up the keys from them. The house is not marked with a sign, nor are there any address numbers on houses in C.R. But all the neighbors know which house you need so they'll help you out. The owner does provide detailed instructions. But, even at that, it could be difficult if you arrive after dark...If you speak Spanish, you can easily communicate with the manager, a lovey woman. If you only speak English, the manager has an English-speaking family member that lives next door. They are all more than willing to help you out. Once you get near the home itself, you will drive up a steep mountain road, about a block long. 4wd or high clearance is recommended, but know that the road is cobbled. Meaning it is fine to drive on. It's not a muddy mess that you may get stuck in. This was our concern when we approached for the first time. Once you get up the drive, you will see that it is made of cobbled stones. No problem. The property is very well taken care of. Large yard. No neighbors. Very private. Perfect. The home is rustic. We had no hot water, but got along just fine with heating water when needed. We had plenty of ant spray to ward off the little buggars. Once done, we had no problem. The online listing stated that there is a T.V. here. Not. WIFI is available at the resort near here. The kitchen comes fully stocked. The beds are very firm. We stayed for 3 weeks. We came to love our little "home". The actual design of the house is brilliant. There is a large deck that overlooks the rainforest, a pond, and you can hear the babbling brook just below you. The house sits up on a small hill which provides an awesome view. A perfect location. Our focus was birding. The variety of bird species was amazing. We found that we enjoyed just staying at the property many days and not have to venture out that often. The resort/restaurant is a short walk away. They are very accomodating. Great food/pool/trails. Well, I hope I've covered some of the necessities that might help you once you choose this lovely home. Well done to the owner, UTE. Thanks for providing the opportunity for the perfect vacation.

Join the toucans for breakfast
This was the highlight of our week in Cost Rica. Relax in this private property in the rainforest. We appreciated the fresh fruit that was left for us and shared it with the birds on the beautiful deck. It seems toucans love papaya and banana! We took advantage of the relationship with the Eco Lodge and enjoyed the restaurant, pool and activities they offered. A unique experience.

Great place to unwind and relax
The house was perfect for me and my wife and teenage son to unwind after fun filled activities during the day. While a bit difficult to find on a dark rainy night, once we did it was perfect. We loved hanging out on the covered patio in the hammocks and just listen to the rushing water below and the sounds of nature all around. Being able to use the nearby hotel facilities and restaurant was great. While the internet didn't work on the property, nor any cell phone signal, I actually consider that to have been preferable. No connection to the world except through the birds! Whenever we just had to have internet it is a short walk to the hotel. We enjoyed watching the birds come grab snacks we left for them. The location near La Fortuna was close enough to do our activities, but also far enough to be away from touristy stuff. Great, just great! Loved it all!

can i stay here forever please?
Ute's house is absolutely stunning. This is one of those houses where you really could spend all day and be happy. Of course there are also the many other charms of the region. We drove up from Dominical and went through the mountains into San Ramon and then Chachagua. The drive is tricky -- very easy to get lost. The views on this route were jaw-dropping. Ute provided good driving directions, but some of the landmarks are hard to find - BE ALERT. We arrived early but were still able to get access to the house early. The property is adjacent to the Chachagua Rain Forest Lodge which provides many benefits - delicious restaurant, walking trails, impeccable landscaping, helpful staff (for info on the region). We ate several meals at the restaurant. The pool looked lovely although we ran out of time and didn't use it. The house is up a hill from the lodge, very private. The house was warm inside (stayed there in July) but the porch is PERFECT! Seriously, we wanted to spend all day on the porch on the hammocks. You will see TOUCANS and an amazing variety of moths (really, we took so many pictures). Even though the house felt warm during the day (again ...porch time!!) it cooled down well in the evening. The house was very well stocked with cooking implements, soap, towels, paper towels...better than many places I've visited . Chachagua (five minutes away) has options for gas and essentials. La Fortuna (about 20 minutes away) has tourist attractions and many restaurant options. TRY OUT THE RAIN FOREST CAFE!! Be aware, many of the most popular sites have fees. If we had been there longer, we would have explored more of the local (less touristy) areas. La Fortuna waterfall is worth seeing. Arenal Volcano Park is nice (again, a minimal fee but with less hiking than I expected). CHECK OUT THE HOT SPRINGS. There are some local coffee tours available - we didn't do any tours but did enjoy a lovely cup of coffee at one of the coffee plantations. Regrettably, I don't speak much Spanish, but everyone I met in CR was very hospitable. Ute's house is good for couples, families, friends...really, anything! We are DEFINITELY eager to go back!!!!!!!
