He was happy with his home. The idea of looking for a new one was nowhere near his radar.
He’s also a very methodical thinker. Impulsiveness is not one of his strong suits.
However, that all took a 180-degree turn when Jonathan Lobel happened upon photos advertising a home on the market in Mesa’s Savona development. They were very persuasive. He called the number on the listing immediately.
“I’m usually a rational thinker. This time, not. In this case, it was completely the opposite,” Jonathan said.
What was it about the house that sparked this uncharacteristic behavior?
“There are 50 different things about the place that are super appealing,” Jonathan said. “StTropez is my favorite place in the world … and this place very much reminds me of the Mediterranean.”
Its influence went even further. When Jonathan informed his wife Heidi that he made an appointment to see this incredible house on the other side of the Valley from their Laveen home, she wasn’t able to accompany him but she did go along with the idea.
This was also very un-Heidi like.
“Apparently, she was moved by the way I was moved. She must’ve seen the look on my face, the smile … she seemed to know from that alone it was worth proceeding,” Jonathan said.
After Jonathan returned, she also agreed to go with his wish and make the purchase, sight unseen. Just six weeks elapsed between Jonathan seeing the photos to the Lobels’ closing on their new Mesa abode in October 2019.
Heidi admitted to being a little surprised.
“He takes six months to buy a TV,” she said, smiling and laughing with the hyperbole.
Health issues have required Jonathan to walk with a cane for years. A difficult spine surgery exacerbated the condition. Yet, his vivacious personality, wit and gift for storytelling bursts through when he’s able to muster it through pain and physical limitations.
And Heidi saw a glimmer of that when he told her about this house.
“Life has been very hard for him. This seems to make him very happy and I wanted to see him happy,” she said.
A TOP LEVEL THAT SITS AT GROUND LEVEL
The villa-esque home sits on more than an acre and spans just over 6,300-square feet plus 3,200-square feet of covered patio. From what the Lobels can tell, nearly every facet is custom in the home that was built around 2009 or 2010.
The front door is comprised of a set of iron gates that allow cool air and warm morning sun in. It’s positioned at ground level but it actually is the entrance to the top floor of the two-story home. Once inside, the foyer is flanked by two waiting areas each flaunting a stone fountain, making them picturesque mingling spaces for party guests to linger with their cocktails. Access to garage space is also through this top level.
This floor hosts four guest rooms, three guest bathrooms, an office and a master suite that’s the size of a large studio apartment. The master bath features all the amenities appropriate for an estate this size, including his and hers closets and a huge bathtub at the entrance that beckons for soaking after an exhausting day.
Two staircases lead to the lower floor. While the top floor is mostly made for slumbering, what lies below is all about action.
WHERE IT'S ALWAYS 72 DEGREES
The lower level sits roughly 25-30 feet below grade, giving it near basement conditions with the functionality and design of a fully equipped first floor living space. As a result, the temperature is always around 72 degrees, which has reduced the Lobels’ electric bill anywhere from 30-50%.
There are no walls and the staircases are the only dividers in the very open floor plan. A chef’s kitchen features custom wood finishes, extensive granite countertops, two sinks, high-end Frigidaire appliances and lots of space for prep work.
It flows into the living room, which leads into a dining room that the Lobels plan to turn into a game room. A separate bar is adjacent and includes a wine closet.
A movie theater accommodates about a dozen and features sumptuous recliners, huge screen, popcorn maker and surround-sound system. Two cozy nooks are created within the barriers of the staircases and feature fountains and seating.
‘BUILT TO ENTERTAIN'
From this level, guests can stroll to the covered back patio that shows off a full outdoor kitchen and massive pool with areas for leisurely wading yet long enough for serious lap swimming. There’s a putting green and ample dining and standing space for large gatherings.
Beyond the property line, on the other side of the wall that borders the pool, a nature space resembles a miniature preserve with raw desert landscape, rabbits and other wildlife.
A few feet from the outdoor kitchen, a spiral staircase leads to the rooftop deck that spans 2,250 square feet and grants 360-degree mountain and nature views. Jonathan was told that the previous owners hosted a cocktail party of 75 people on this roof.
“It seems apparent that the house was built to entertain and designed with a singular purpose, to host wonderful events with family and friends,” Jonathan said.
A HOUSE THAT FITS INTO THEIR FUTURE
Jonathan and Heidi both come from corporate IT backgrounds, with Jonathan also having found success as a solutions and efficiency consultant for large corporations.
The couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day and live with their four rescue dogs, who move with eagerness and ease in their new home.
Jonathan is retired. Heidi is employed at her corporate job but realizes those days are numbered.
Like her husband, Heidi has endured auto-immune issues for years. Not long ago, while she was not yet walking with a cane, her physical therapist told her she was headed that way.
Today, they both use canes to get around but are able to manage the stairs, although Heidi confessed that at first, “the stairs were scary.”
“We’ve got 20 canes in this house and for some reason they all end up on the top floor or all on the bottom floor. How does that happen?” Jonathan said.
With this knowledge, they looked for an income generator that wouldn’t require a lot of physical exertion or working from locations outside of their home. They had rental properties in the past and saw that as their best viable option. The ultimate goal is to transform their new home into a bed & breakfast or a venue for events.
“This house fit into what we were talking about,” Jonathan said.
