Camaleon 2 Beach Studio 🏄

Casa Camaleon is located in Palm Beach Estates which is a quaint and exclusively private community of Playa Grande. You will arrive at Palm Beach first through a gated entrance and then onto a narrow stone-covered road circling our community of only around 200 homes making our community feel welcome. 5 minutes from the front door to the beach sand, we are a short beach walk from the world-famous surf break of Playa Grande as well as several other popular surf beaches including our home break right out front which we call Palm Beach Main.
The Camaleon Cabinas is a small group of 5 private, self-contained apartments, owner-run with specific attention to detail. Tropical garden. Fenced yard. The decor is ethnic boutique-style simply done but perfectly sufficient. We have 2 x studio apartments and 3 x two-bedroom apartments. Each apartment is fully equipped with kitchenware, modern AC, free WIFI, all linens and towels, boards, and bikes onsite. It's everything we look for when we travel.
We are unique in our ability to offer affordable accommodation without compromising on what we found to be important amenities whilst still being right by the most beautiful beach and also close to the ferry which crosses over into Tamarindo for those who want to feel a little more hustle and bustle for the day. Palm Beach is in the center of the Marine Park for the Turtle nesting grounds. The beach is seemingly endless and always uncrowded. Great surf, stunning beach, countless wildlife of all kinds, quaint town, very good for the soul.

No Surprises
No surprises here, exactly as listed. Communication with the Host was always timely. They turned us onto a great transport service to and from Liberia Airport. This place is on the small side but had everything we needed for our stay. It was very clean and comfortable. The king bed was on the hard side and not the foam mattress we are used to but worked fine. The air con runs all the time and makes some noise but we like some white noise when we sleep. Easy walk to the beach and 3 restaurants. Cafe Mar Azul was by far the best. George make the best Mai Tai. The market is Very basic with no prices listed. We followed other’s advice and stoped on the way from the airport for supplies. Tamarindo has many grocery stores to choose from. We did not cook, just sandwiches, but the kitchen supplies are minimal and it would be difficult to cook much. Large refrigerator, hot plate and toaster oven. No microwave in our unit. 20-30 min walk and $2 ferry ride to Tamarindo. The beach is nice and flat with no rocks. There is minimal shade but we travel with our own chairs and shade. These along surf boards and bicycles can be rented close by. We also brought our own liquor along with mayonnaise and miracle whip. We would have no problem staying here again. Tip- if you are buying coffee the airport pricing is the same as we found in Tamarindo and if you buy 5 you get 2 free which is a good added savings. Costa Rican coffee is some of the best and I always stock up when there. Pura Vida

Awesome place to stay
Casa Camaleon is a great place to stay in for all types of travellers. It is in a quiet location surrounded by lots of trees and wildlife. It’s a quick walk to the beach and local grocery mart. There are also a lot of restaurants within walking distance as well. The kitchenette in the apartment had everything I needed to prepare all of my meals. There is also an outdoor shower when you get back from the beach. I like the lockbox key system as well, so you never have to worry about bringing your room key to the beach or having to hide it somewhere. The owner Sharr is also great to deal with and very knowledgeable about the area and can recommend all types of things to do and see. Overall it was a perfect place to stay.

A perfect, quiet, private apartment for my husband and me. We loved our long walks on the beautiful beach. The location is perfect for enjoying sand, surf, and sun. Local spots to eat at were lovely. We will definitely stay here again. Sharr was extremely helpful with any questions prior to our travel and made some great recommendations! Thank you.

Costa Rica get away
Absolutely loved the place! The only negative was that the security code to access the property was changed at the last minute on the day of our arrival, and due to an unexpected power outage, we had no way of getting the communication with the new code until the 2nd day. It would have been better if the original code I received on my VRBO a couple days before our arrival had worked for the first night at least. Other than that, the place was really amazing and my mother enjoyed her stay there VERY much!!!!

This apartment is in an excellent location, a short walk to the beach and local restaurants. It is set in a peaceful shaded garden which is ideal for relaxing out of the midday heat. The nearby beach is stunning with great waves for surfing or body boarding and is not crowded at all. Parking is just outside the apartment. We enjoyed breakfast’s and dinners at Cafe Mar Azul which is 5 minute walk away with good food and friendly staff. Communication was good with the owners and we had no problem finding the apartment or with check in. We also enjoyed a canoe safari on the estuary seeing many birds, small crocodiles, lizards and howler monkeys. We would definitely recommend.

This is rental is a great location. Very efficient use of space. For future travelers I recommend bringing your own beach towel. The ones provided are simply bath towels and when I reached out to the owner to get more, I was denied. If you need a hair dryer you need to bring your own. Also you need to bring bath soap and shampoos.

Host not really a host
I loved Playa Grande. I loved Palm Beach Estates. I did not know it was an as isolated property at the end of a very bad road on which taxi drivers and shuttle drivers do not even want to take you to. I had no way of getting transport to or from grocery stores. The owner host did not communicate with me very well throughout my whole stay. What I did learn was from other locals and neighbors in the vicinity but I learned many things to late. There is no book in the room to tell you about the locality and what’s around you. When I asked the owner for some thing like that she sharply said it keeps changing so we don’t have a book. But she offered no helpful information. Also they do not change towels or sheets or anything. Unless you ask for them. Also the space was tiny. No closet. Three hooks to hang clothes on. And no desk or table inside To use a computer. The Internet connection was very weak. My PC would not stay connected for more than 10 minutes if that per day

First stop in Costa Rica
Great cabana. Just me so I only used one bedroom. Had everything I needed, and great wifi. Very close to beautiful beach and great restaurant. I ate all 4 nights at cafe mar azul, which is just past the path to the beach. Insanely low price, 11 bucks, for seared tuna, smashed potatoes and sauted veggies. All the food was fantastic and cheap. Small market just a couple hundred yards further. Walk south on the beach, catch the water taxi for a buck, and you're in Tamarindo. Everybody I met was super nice. Got a ride from Neil from Liberia to the cabana and then onto my next stop in Playa Avellanus. Super nice. Highly recommend Casa Cameleon.

Don’t book with mobile app
BEWARE- the amenities at this property are not how they appear in the VRBO mobile app. - the communal pool listed is actually a 10 min walk to a hotel where you need to purchase drinks and food to swim (this important detail doesn’t show in the app). We had booked this property, needing a pool for our young family and were very dissatisfied when we arrived. The owners wouldn’t entertain a refund for a shorter stay but instead lent us a bucket & baby bath tub as compensation for the missing pool. We feel it was false advertising on their part and a compromise with our reservation length should have been given. Other discrepancies are: - The surf boards in the description and pictures are not included and need to be rented for longer than a day for them to get them out of storage for you. - The laundry is also at an extra price. - Bike rentals at an extra price The overall Casa (minus surf boards) is smaller and darker than appears in the pictures. With only 1 air conditioner for the whole unit the back double room remained hot and humid throughout our week. Two stars were given - one for the beach - it’s nice and quiet. And another star for being the end unit #5 - it was nice to have the privacy and not have people walking by. Overall, read the fine print for this listing and ensure that you fully understand the fine details. The inflexible nature of the hosts wasn’t super Pura Vida (something we didn’t encounter during our two month trip in Costa Rica).

Perfect!
We just came back from such a pleasant visit in Playa Grande. Casa Camaleon was exactly what we need. Room enough for all of us, clean, cosy and close to the beach. The folder in the livingroom explained everything you need to know about activities, places to visit, food shopping, etc., etc. We especially enjoyed the fresh mahi-mahi we bought from Frank on Tuesday. The happy-hour specials at the hotel behind Taco Star are really good and no-one on earth makes better tacos than Brittney at Taco Star. Terry and Sharr went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Great visit. We came back well rested. Thanks so much!

Nice spot, well equipped little Cabana for a small family
Playa Grande is a great spot. Nice surf, wildlife, safe, and not too busy. The highway is in good shape, the roads in the community were a bit rough, but not bad. The place is well equipped and in a good location, 5 min walk to the beach. Owners are a great resource. A great spot for our young family.

Perfect in every way!
Casa Camaleon is such a wonderful place to stay, in a great location in Costa Rica. First of all, Sharr and Terry were available nearly 24/7 to help with anything we needed. The location of their cabinas are within walking or biking distance of restaurants, surf board and bike rentals, groceries, and most importantly, the beach! We did not rent a car because we heard the roads were not good to drive on, but NOT TRUE! The roads are good...driving may be a bit more hectic than where we are from but the roads were in very good condition. Not sure if you really need a car, though, as you can get picked up for any activity you want. We used the water taxi several times to go to Tamarindo and back, and it was an adventure in itself. We decided to forego any excursions to the rain forest or zip lines etc., and opted instead to really do what is done best in CR...chill! Every morning we woke early and were on the beach by 6:00. The water is warm and good for swimming or for taking a beach walk. It was fun to watch the surfers and to join others in watching the sun set each day. We enjoyed walking to all the restaurants in the area. We rented bikes one day and that was great, too. Most of the time, though, we spent on the beach or at the cabina reading in the hammock or resting inside during the hottest time of the day. We spent a whole week here and did not feel like we missed out on anything, to the contrary, we felt like we fit in to the neighborhood. We loved the cleanliness of our unit #4, being able to hang things on the line outside, and sitting at the cute table in the front. If you can get along without a TV, touristy shops, crowds and long lines of traffic, stay here. It is truly peaceful and is a special slice of heaven.

Fantastic Time at Casa Camaleon!
My wife and I just spent 5 days at Casa Camaleon and had a wonderful time. The location is ideal for short walks to the beach or several local restaurants. Though walking is certainly easy, I'd recommend renting bikes if you don't have a car, which we didn't. A Cachete Surf, about a 10 minute walk from Casa Camaleon, rents bikes for $10/day. Sharr was great to work with while we were there, answering any questions that we had via WhatsApp. She connected us with a local who gave us a ride to a breakfast spot and then on to Wil-Mart (a must stop!) for groceries. Sharr also helped us book a shuttle through Xplore Costa Rica (highly recommended company as we used them multiple times). On two occasions we woke up to howler monkeys in the trees around our casa. We did multiple excursions, but probably our favorite was the canoe trip through the estuary early in the morning where we saw more monkeys, crocs, and dozens of species of birds. We would highly recommend booking Casa Camaleon and really hope to go back again in 2020. Thanks Sharr for a great time!

Easy stroll to an amazing beach!
We really appreciated the help connecting to transportation both from the airport and then onto Monteverde. The accommodation is small but we were only indoors to sleep and the kitchen has the basics for making meals. We just left the front and back doors open so a breeze flowed through and there was no need for AC at all. This is a tranquil retreat that is well suited for people who don’t want the constant din of Tamarindo.
