Casa Mango Puntarenas, Costa Rica

A Great Place to hang out !

We offer a fantastic pool, sun chairs, rocking chairs on our deck, Bluetooth sound system, WiFi, HDTV, and Netflix. Refrigerator with Ice Machine, Ceiling Fans, a spectacular Deck over the water, super quiet A/C in the bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen, secure parking, hot water, water tank with pump ( constant, on-demand water supply ), outdoor mini Bar, smoke detectors, lockers, comfortable mattresses, washing machine.

we also have a tour boat that leaves right from the property that does tours to Isla Tortuga, Gitana, and others about twice a month.

Casa Mango is a quaint, rustic house restored to its former glory and updated with new comforts that will amaze, right on the tip of the peninsula, Santa Eduviges, Fray Casiano. The place is located right on the Estero and River from Puntarenas. We have a great view from our deck over the water to the "Angostura" from Puntarenas. There is NO other place like this in Costa Rica. We are also conveniently located only 5 miles to the Ferry, supermarkets, bakery, pulperia are located close. We are in a "Real Tico Neighborhood" this is NOT a setup for the tourists, not a million dollar villa on top of a hill where you don't see or hear a soul as long as you are there, our place is right where life goes on, this is how people really live in Costa Rica. The neighbors are mostly fisherman and retired people, all are friendly, humble and working class. There is always some movement on the water, boats come and go all day, sometimes at night we have a couple of shrimp fishers 3 meters off the deck. They will sell you Jumbo Shrimps if you ask for cheap. It's great, sitting on the deck never gets boring, there is always something to see. There are also hundreds of birds around all day, different species, coming and going, water landing, fishing, fighting, floating around, fishing vessels, small boats, big boat, you can even see the cruise ships coming and going to Puntarenas at night - Spectacular

The bus stop is on the next corner, the bus will take you to Chacarita, Puntarenas Center, El Roble and other locations. Taxi's can be called, the public bus station is just 100m away.

Our time in Puntarenas...
We enjoyed staying at Casa Mango. True to it's name, there are mangos hanging off the big tree ready to eat or as we did, make mango margaritas! Josh is an excellent host and his girlfriend, Mariela, is an great cook. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast (gallo pinto/eggs), fab dinner (Arroz con Pollo) and the best pina coladas ever! The river/estuary views are every changing with the tides. Overall, it's a hidden paradise in a typical Costa Rican neighborhood.

Casa Mango
Josh and Mariela are great and he casa was okay, an oasis in a poor area, at the end of a bus line to Puntarenas only 75m away. Bird watching on the estuary is great. The neighbors dogs and roosters start early along with 2 stroke fishing biats around 4:30. Worst things are a bar 50 meters actoss the river open all night sometimes, very loud and throwing garbage into the riner. The neighbors are burning every day, many with the wind pushing smoke into tbe unit.. Make sure to have ear plugs and binoculars

Real Costa Rica
This property is located in the typical Costa Rica village. People are mostly fishing for leaving there. The owners are very nice and helpful. We had a beautiful balcony right on the river for all our meals and relaxing time. It is a birds paradise. We enjoyed watching them especially during low tide. A pool was very nice after a hot day. You also can walk to the ocean through the village. It takes about 10-15 minutes. We really took advantage of 2 bikes on the property. There is a biking trail along the ocean. To get there we had to ride bikes to the bridge over the canal. The bridge looks a little scary but once you cross it and see local people using it every day, it becomes normal. The river the house is built on is beautiful. Our only regret was that we could not rent kayaks. We can only imagine how many days we could spend on the water. This property is about 2 hours from Arenal, Manuel Antonio and other popular attractions. Make sure that it fits your trip. Thank you Lisa and Mike for a beautiful stay.

Really Enjoyed our time here
We spent 5 nights at Casa Lilu. We enjoyed visiting with the hosts, Mike and Louisa. They are wonderful people. Their dog, Oso, was such a joy. My husband and I played with him daily. The house has everything needed to cook and feel comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the fishing boats come and go. It was also where we had coffee every morning and dinner every evening. It was a thrill to watch the birds catch fish. We swam in the pool daily and read books in the lounge chairs. It was a super nice experience to stay there.

Beautiful surroundings behind the green gate
We were leery as we approached the “green gate” but once they were opened a paradise revealed itself!! Mike and Luisa couldn’t have been more attentive and helpful on the area, with where to shop and suggestions of tours to take. Oso their dog made us feel closer to home and our pups on the ranch who we were missing.

All we were looking for and more
We wanted to get away from our daily, city-like routines, and have some peace and quite while enjoying ourselves in a marine setting. We got it! The facilities were beyond our expectations in all aspects. The greenery around us, the swimming pool, the deck by the water, the fully-equipped house, the cleanliness, the privacy and safety within the property... everything was perfect. And above all, our hosts! Welcoming, friendly, respectful, helpful, interesting... always willing and ready to make our stay perfectly pleasant. Thank you very much!

Quaint spot in true Tico town
We very much enjoyed our stay at Casa Lilu. Mike and Luisa are so helpful and kind. The house and grounds are unique and so inviting. Sitting areas except for dining table are outside, but outdoor patio is covered and has a TV. Felt a bit unsure as we drove down the road to the house, but we felt very safe and liked spending time in a less touristy area. We could do many excursions in the morning and then enjoyed spending the late afternoons relaxing at the house. Mike runs a boat tour business that goes to the Tortuga Island so if you are there on the weekend you might be able to book with him to make that visit too!

Wonderful Puntarenas Estuary views
My husband and I enjoyed this truly hidden gem. The home was very clean and large with air conditioning in bedroom and a very well supplied kitchen. Our favorite pastime was sitting on the patio with front row views of estuary and canal and watching the many birds including pelicans, frigate birds, egrets, ibises and others. Many small boats passed by throughout the day. A lovely pool, nice gardens and great hosts made our stay special. The owners also have a boat and we enjoyed an affordable day trip to Tortuga Island. We also drove to nearby peninsula for casual eating and walking around with many locals doing the same.

Wonderful stay for our first trip to Costa Rica!
Mike and Luisa were probably the best hosts we have had through airbnd and vrbo. And we have had quite a few vacations in Canada, Europe and Scandinavia. They were very welcoming and helpful. I believe we have made some friends and if we are ever back in CR, we will stay here! And the pool was a great asset! Thank you Mike and Luisa!

Your own oasis in a typical Tico neighborhood.
My daughter and I had the pleasure of staying on this beautiful property. Our stay was at the end of January and we got to enjoy the beautiful river views, nice-sized pool, and comfy living space. Mike and Luisa were wonderful hosts! The location was close to the ferry, which took us to the other side of the bay. We spent the days lounging in the sun or exploring the city and its attractions. Mike had great recommendations on where to go and what to see. Staying here allows you to see what it really feels like to live in a typical Costa Rican neighborhood. We would highly recommend this listing!

Highly Recommended!
This was an ideal place to spend four weeks experiencing neighborhood life in Costa Rica. There are small shops within walking distance for most of what we needed and door-to-door vendors for produce and eggs. The bus stop is just outside the gate providing convenient access to Puntarenas which is an interesting place to explore. We enjoyed our time on the deck watching birds and wildlife, boats and fishermen, and the changing tides. It was a convenient base for day trips including San Ramon, Natuwa and Tivives Beach. Mike and Luisa are tremendous hosts - friendly, kind and helpful. The description and photos had us knowing exactly what to expect. We also really enjoyed meeting the campers that stay in the parking area, that was bonus.

BEST 16 days of my life!!!
Mike and Luisa are friends for life! Like I said when I said "Hasta luego" you can't get rid of me this easy - I WILL be back! I just cannot impress upon you enough the hospitality and joy Mike and Luisa brought to my first Costa Rica adventure. I learned so much about Puntarenas and neighboring areas during dinner and/or drinks on that fabulous deck. Luisa took me everywhere I needed to go when I was at the house and introduced to people who gave me the VIP treatment on boat tour w/o paying the VIP prices :) She even took me on a bike ride and we a rode in a "cup" across the river! LOL had to be there...... When I was traveling all the many places I went they were well w/in a 2 to 3.5 hour drive. This is the ONLY place to stay if you want to keep a home base while traveling all other areas in this beautiful and inviting country. That was one of the best parts was coming "home" after a 3 to 4 day trip. They were always there to open the gate and welcome me HOME! Love you guys!

A private resort devoted to relaxation!
When driving to Casa Lilu, you get an appreciation for the Tica experience mentioned in the description. Then the gate is opened and you are in your private resort at the confluence of the two rivers and the ever changing tide convinces you to sit back and watch the world go by. The house is very well stocked, particularly the kitchen, the rooms are comfortable, the A/C works well (for the 20 or so minutes we had it on because the weather was perfect !), the internet is strong and consistent, the pool is crystal clear, and the grounds are well maintained by the on-site manager. Security is important for us and Casa Lilu is a tranquil spot in the midst of an authentic/genuine working Tico town. Our week was wonderful and although it was hard to leave our oasis, we were able to visit many coastal area towns and beaches nearby, always certain to be back by sundown to relax on the deck, check on the tides, and enjoy the marvelous sunsets!

Casa Lilu
Our month stay at Casa Lilu was everything we expected and more. First and foremost, Mike and Louisa are genuine, caring and quite helpful with local as well as country information. We explored the Tico neighborhood that is just on the other side of the gorgeous morning glory hedge, shopped in the local stores and made frequent visits to buy freshly baked bread just down the street. Being away from the common resort type establishments was refreshing and allowed us to experience and immerse ourselves in the rhythm of everyday life in Costa Rica. Casa Lilu is in itself an oasis with a lovely and well cared for pool, a deck where we spent much time relaxing, having our meals and watching the local fishermen pass by on their way to the ocean to fish with many stopping in the canal or estuary to cast nets or to throw hand-lines into the water. The lot is spacious and well maintained. Jonathon, the on-site overseer, is expert at his work and was always prepared to assist us with our needs. He was very discreet, gracious and kind. The house suited our needs well with two bedrooms and each with its own bathroom, a large common area and a well-stocked kitchen that facilitated our cooking needs. We even learned how to make Gallo Pinto (a popular Costa Rican dish) and enjoyed that meal several times during our stay. Casa Lilu was a great location for us as from here we were able to drive to many other areas of interest. Quite a few were day trips and we did choose to do two “over-nighters” one being in the Arenal area and the other was a sojourn to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica all the while leaving most of our “stuff” safe and secure at Casa Lilu with Jonathon. To give one an idea of the areas that can be visited on a day trip our trips included Monteverde, Montezuma (on the Nicoya Peninsula), La Fortuna, Manual Antonio, Jaco, Uvita, Atenas/San Jose and the Poas volcano area. We made quite a few trips into Puntarenas proper as there are markets there, several good restaurants, the ferry and of course just people watching. We enjoyed exploring several different areas in Puntarenas and walking through the vendors’ stands near the pier where cruise ships dock. Thank you, Mike, Louisa and Jonathon, for being such lovely hosts and making us feel so welcomed. Through our stay you have become friends that we shall forever cherish and yes, if and when we return to Costa Rica, we would enjoy revisiting Casa Lilu.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________ A special place in a non-tourist area........ A little away from the house lives Victor, the man who maintains the property and the land. Very discreet, he is extremely kind. There are also 2 nice dogs. We stayed there a wonderful month. The house is comfortable and well equipped. The site is very nice. We had all our meals outside. What a pleasure to enjoy the terrace! It is beautiful at any time of the day! The owner, Mike, was very attentive and very helpful in answering all our questions. He gave us some good advice. We would return with joy!

Extremely well built and maintained property. Michael and Louisa are great hosts, very accommodating, and friendly. The grounds keeper is a very nice person, and will help in any way possible. This property had the best equipped kitchen that we ever seen, good cookware, spices, oils, and sharp cutlery. The pool is great, nice and clean, nice for a cooling dip in the afternoon. The neighborhood is real Tico, very safe, and friendly. Fresh baked bread only one block away that is a must try. Coffee in the morning on the deck with fresh baked bread watching the birds fly by, and fish jumping in the river was the highlight of the day. We enjoyed staying here so much we even gave up an excursion to spend more time on the property. We feel that Michael is a friend, will defiantly be coming here again to spend more than a few days.
