The only reason to stay in Rausu is its proximity to Shiretoko National Park. Unfortunately, the park and Hwy 334 are both closed in April. We were hoping mid-April they'd both be open, and the online information, at least in English, wasn't clear on the point. The drive between Shibetsu and Shari was pretty though with lots of snow in the mountains and roadways clear of it.
So the hotel was practically empty. Staff were friendly and the meals were good. We ate locally sourced deer as a small part of a large dinner, and it's the first time I've enjoyed eating deer meat. Our non-smoking, western-japanese room (essentially a slightly raised platform with two twin beds) was small, well maintained, and clean. The geo-thermally supplied onsen, both indoors and outdoors, were nice and soothing. We used them twice daily and had them mostly to ourselves except for a few locals. Wifi was fine, but only a few TV channels were available (all Japanese, poor picture quality).
In sum, this hotel is functional and OK for a short stay.
