A quirky restoration, sleeps 4 people & a dog WiFi, numerous walks from the door & a pub nearby!

Mill End Cottage, Gunnerside is exactly that! This Yorkshire Dales holiday cottage is situated at the right gable end of The Old Corn Mill which dates from at least the 17th Century. A quirky restoration sympathetically designed by the current owners which offers a traditional Yorkshire style of welcome from the sound of the tumbling and rolling Gunnerside Beck to the friendly glow from the multi-fuel stove housed in the Lounge inglenook.

As you enter this dales holiday cottage and step into the fitted kitchen and dining area for four, you feel very much part of the Dales’ history as you can see the Beck flowing past from the dining area window and can imagine that wheel being pushed round and round. The stone flagged floors lead you into the Lounge with comfortable seating, wooden floor, beamed ceiling, stone walls and sash style windows all lovingly resourced. Within the lounge there are additional doors to the back of the holiday cottage. These doors when open can only be used as a viewing point to the beck due to the steep and rough bank. However when the doors are open guests can absorb the view and sound of the beck from the safe comfort of the lounge.

The wooden staircase leads to the first floor of the hoilday cottage. On the right is the double bedroom with vaulted beamed ceiling and windows which outlook the court yard, flower borders and pond.

The first door on the left is the entrance to the second bedroom with wooden floors….on this level here there is a built in small wardrobe for the storage of hanging clothes with the benefit of a chest of drawers for smaller items, then another staircase to the small but accommodating twin room with velux window. As you return to the landing area, the second door on the left opens to a spacious shower room with w.c., basin, heated towel rail and large shower cubicle with the facility of a power shower for relaxing those muscles after a strenuous hike or cycle ride.

From the kitchen door of the holiday cottage you can stroll around Gunnerside Village known for its tranquil setting now, but once it was a busy centre for the thriving lead mining industry of years gone by, In the late 8th century the area was a Norse settlement and the subjects ruled by Gunnar a Viking Chieftain.

On Friday nights the Fish Van arrives for that tasty evening meal to take home. During your visit you can taste the delights of the local café/bistro, Ghyllfoot Tea Room with home cooked food and take away meals and traditional ales and great food from the Kings Head pub. On your return to Mill End Cottage on the left you will pass the Old Working Smithy and Museum where the sixth generation of Black Smith still works and farms in the area. From this point one can only admire the surrounding panorama and hills of what many consider to be the gem of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The courtyard, gardens, pond, bbq and there is even an outhouse for the secure storage of cycles and ample parking behind secure gates. This cosy dales holiday cottage is suitable for couples or a small family, but it is suggested that the second bedroom would not be advantageous for the infirm or children under the age of twelve. Care would need to be taken by any water’s edge and children should be supervised at all times when close to the pond or nearby Beck.

Mill End Cottage is one of our dog friendly holiday cottages, one well behaved dog welcome. There are a number of dog friendly pubs in the area and plenty of walks locally.

To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible towels, kitchen and bed linen are provided. Electricity, central heating, and initial supply for the fire is also included in the rental price.

Superb location for walking or biking holiday in the northern part of the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage is in a very pleasant setting and provided a comfortable retreat in which to rest and refuel between excursions and exertions.

Lovely area
Gunnerside is a very pretty village but quite remote from any major facilities. It depends what sort of holiday you are looking for really. The roads are not great for traveling on and it takes a while to get to anywhere you want to go but thats not always a bad thing it you enjoy the drive. Gunnerside is situated on the Swale and the cottage has a beck running at the base of the cottage but it isnt really accessible as the area surrounding the cottage is very overgrown. Its lovely to look out on though. Our children loved the River Swale and skimming stones and we went on a lovely walk to Muker although when we got there the pub, tea room and shop were all closed. This was a bit of theme for the holiday as things had not quite got back up and running due to covid. There is no phone signal either so best to book any restaurants in advance including the local pub who dont take kindly to none bookings as we found out. The cottage itself is quite dated but cute, and as said in some other reviews could do with a refresh here and there. Also we found the bed quite uncomfy but that could be just down to personal taste. The chickens were fun and the dog thankfully didnt chase them as we feared he might as that would have been a disaster. Cottage was well equipped and had a really good shower. We enjoyed a trip to Richmond, Thorpe Perrow and Aysgarth Falls.

Wonderful stay in an exquisitely beautiful area.
Absolutely loved staying here, the cottage is rustic, but that was perfect for us. The house is set on the river and there are many walks directly from the front door. Loved watching Mandy's chickens and their shenanigans. Very well priced and located in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National park. Stairs might be a little tricky for littles and elders.

Fabulous host
The cottage was gorgeous. Well designed, well furnished and comfortable. I stayed with my two dogs. It is a good place for walkers. We cannot walk far and some of the fields close by had animals with their young in them, so that was not a good option. However, I found a place near Richmond - Round Howe. It is a car park with a picnic area and if you go across the bridge there is a National Trust area. You can walk either to the left or the right. We enjoyed walking to the left. The river Swale was very low so we could go to the water's edge and the dogs could play in there. The host was really welcoming and kept checking that everything was ok for us. I would highly recommend this place to stay.

Ideal for chicken lovers
Gunnerside is a very nice little village but the local road network is not ideal for getting out and about . As a walking holiday excellent. Cottage location within the village excellent and very quiet apart from the cockerel. The property itself would benefit from a deep clean and some rug replacement. Crockery also to be replaced where plates are chipped. Stairs not ideal for young or old as they are tight but as a bolt hole for just 2 who are fine with tight stairs it is ok for a short break.

Peaceful Cottage in a beautiful location.
I have just spent a lovely 4 days in this property. It is very well equipped and tucked away in the centre of Gunnerside. The local pub is a 2 minute walk (The King’s Head - book ahead of you wish to eat here as it is busy and only open Weds to Sunday). The cottage is part of a larger mill in which Mandy, the owner, lives. She could not have been more helpful and was the ideal host. Gunnerside is surrounded by truly beautiful countryside and this property is the perfect place to stay to enjoy it.

Excellent cozy cottage. Nicely presented and nothing that one could find fault with. Very attractive village with a pub that does good food not 5 minutes walk away.

Delightful holiday with the chickens!
We had the most wonderful stay in Swaledale in this lovely stone cottage. The owner lives on site, and is so kind and helpful. We really felt like we became friends. We also made friends with her friendly and gentle dog and cat and many chickens. A highlight of the week was the emergence of seven chicks, born in a hanging basket! The location is just amazing for exploring the dales and we had many lovely pub meals too. Unfortunately, the 'summerhouse' pictured in the advert has fallen into some disrepair (as well as having to house the chickens during bird flu). However, there is access to a lovely little walled gravel garden with dining table and chairs and plants and flowers overflowing from every raised bed. We were the first guests for a very long time, and this may explain why the house was a bit damp on our arrival. But a couple of days with the fire on soon improved things. As it is a dog-friendly cottage, there was inevitably some evidence of dog hair on the rugs. Regardless of these minor points, we felt immediately at ease, with the sound of the beck and the birds as the backdrop to a delightful stay. The children loved it, and you can start the most amazing hikes or cycling tours straight from the property.
