Wonderful nature, long and wide sandy beaches, the Wadden Sea, the North sea, fresh salty air, diverse wildlife, well maintained old farm houses, as well as the museums and the relaxed atmosphere make Rømø the perfect holiday destination.
Sights: The Museum Skærbæk is a local history museum located in an old merchant's estate built in 1909. Here you can learn more about local culture and history (23 km). Take a trip back to the Iron Age in Hjemsted Oldtidspark near Skærbæk. There you can visit a museum, and old settlement, grave sites and subterranean tunnels (18 km). Visit Løgumkloster in order to discover the fascinating monastery created by monks in the 12th century (42 km). Or play Viking for one day in the Lustrupholm Viking Centre in Ribe, where you can meet metal smiths, bow makers, weavers and cooks along with their families from the Viking age and visit them in their houses (43 km). You should definitely visit Tønder and bask in the charming atmosphere of the old merchant town, visit some of the numerous museums and enjoy the many good restaurants (51 km).
Nature and culture: Behind Havneby lies Vråby plantation, a wooded dune area with a good number of hiking trails. Sønder beach is the southernmost corner of Rømø. A large sand dune dike protects you from the sandy wind here. Rømø consists to 90% of nature areas made up of heath and dunes. It contains a wide variety of wildlife. The northern tip of the island is a bird protection area. You can also find seals on Rømø. Ride horses or go hiking. Take a walk across the sea floor during low tide - you might just find something interesting left by the tide. Many nature experiences wait for you along the countless hiking and bicycling trails. One of the most remarkable natural occurrences of the country can be observed every year in spring and autumn, when millions of starlings are dancing across the evening ski over the marsh lands. The birds congregate in beautiful formations belying the fact that this is a fight for life or death with birds of prey.
