With the experience of several trips to Rome from our home in the United States, we chose the Fiumicino Airport Hilton (not the “Garden Hilton which is near, but not on, airport property) to avoid the hassle of taking taxis and “shuttles” whose ridiculously high rates cut into savings obtained by staying in the much less expensive Airbnb’s and “hotels,” (many of which lack a front desk, concierge, or any hotel services) located in the city of Fiumicino, a relatively short, but completely unwalkable, distance from the airport. And in so far as our goal was to wake up just a ten or twelve minute walk down the enclosed passageway between hotel and terminal to catch a morning flight after a night in a clean, fully-equipped, quiet and hassle-free room, we made the right choice.
Also on the plus side, the hotel staff and our restaurant waiter were professional, courteous and attentive.
But when rating the Rome Airport Hilton for quality and value, we note, first of all, that for budget travelers such as us, it is expensive --- the off-season rate was Euros 243 for a very standard room. And while the room was clean and comfortable. It appeared to have last been updated before UBS ports were standard in better hotels. (There were two UBS ports on a desk, but none near the bed or built into the wall.) The coffee maker was awkwardly located. We couldn't find an ice machine. Little things that made the stay okay but ordinary and over priced.
