Charming cottage on Piney River. Host your Thanksgiving in our chefs kitchen.

The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Slice of Heaven
We so enjoyed our stay. From the moment we walked in the home, we were filled with beauty. The home was beautifully decorated…even had a cook’s dream kitchen. Then walking out back by the river was even more surprises and beauty. We will be back!

The best rental we have ever been to!
My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at this cabin. We always fly fish on the Piney River and watched this house get remodeled and loved the look of it once it was finished. We were so excited when we saw it listed as a VRBO rental and knew we needed to stay in it. The house was a dream!! The location is perfect, and it is so peaceful sitting out by the river. The house is so cozy, clean, and set up beautifully! The owners even had some things like spices, eggs, coffee grounds, and much more that was very helpful! We will definitely be staying again!

Amazing Riverfront Retreat
We visit this area every year and this was, by far, the best mountain cottage I have ever rented. The host was amazing and very hospitable. The communication with the host was top notch. We were greeted with a note, farm fresh eggs, and some local beer to try. The mountain and river views were beautiful and the front porch with rocking chairs was a great place to relax. Down by river, we relaxed in the hammock, sat on the deck, fished for trout, and took a quick dip in the nice, cold spring water. Inside the cottage was pure elegance with a farmhouse flare. I especially loved the kitchen. Another highlight was all of the beautiful reclaimed wood utilized throughout the house. We were there during a recent tropical storm and although the power went out, the generator kept everything running perfectly. I was so glad that the owners had the whole home generator in place. We will definitely come back again.

Perfect Stay on the Piney River
We had a great stay at the cabin. It's a fantastic location right on the Piney River, offering serene and picturesque views. The cabin is everything it says in the description and more. Beautifully refurbished with a charming rustic touch, it features modern amenities to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay. The interior is cozy and inviting, with every detail thoughtfully considered. The fully equipped kitchen, comfortable bedding, and ample living area made us feel right at home. The outdoor front patio was perfect for morning coffee, and nice fire pit for evening relaxation. While the proximity to the river allowed for peaceful nature walks and some fun fishing. Everything is provided for a comfortable stay, making it an ideal retreat for anyone looking to unwind and enjoy nature's beauty.

Wonderful Getaway on the Piney River!
We had a wonderful experience on the Piney River! We stayed for a week and never felt the need to leave. Host Maria was fantastic—gracious, patient, and always ready to answer our questions. The cottage itself is a dream, offering all the amenities we could ask for while feeling like a home. The grounds were well-groomed and the access to the river was amazing. The cottage was well-stocked with everything we needed; it has a vibe of a boutique hotel. Checking in and out was a breeze. The setting was incredibly peaceful, making for a truly relaxing vacation. I can't offer enough praise for Maria, she is exemplary in every way as is the property. Highly recommend!

Luxury hotel or Vrbo?
This place was the most impressive vacation rental I’ve ever been to. EVERYTHING was perfectly planned and executed from house design to decor to extra touches. They have thought of everything. If you want to play (and fish —there are some pretty big trout) on an awesome river and then go inside and pretend you are at a 5 star hotel this is the place for you! I don’t return to many vacation rentals because there is so much world to see, but I may return this one!

Beautiful and peaceful
My wife and our dogs stayed at the Chestnut House for 3 nights and we loved every minute of it. The owners did a phenomenal job making the house comfortable and cozy. The house is pristine, clean and beautifully decorated. It is a gorgeous piece of property with several outside areas to sit and relax. Our dogs enjoyed running around and sniffing every inch of the property. We loved sitting on the deck and listening to the Piney River. The owners had everything we needed- from a coffee maker, washing machine, and even little touches like a first aid kit and toiletries. We loved our stay and are grateful the owners wanted to share their home with us!

Beautifully renovated property on the Piney River
Maria and Randy have done a truly outstanding job of renovating this house into a luxurious retreat in the mountains. The accommodations were beyond what I expected. The details within the house itself are seen in every room. Randy kept as much of the original structure as possible so there is a rustic feel alongside the modern finishes. The rooms are well laid out and there is plenty of space to enjoy. The kitchen is well stocked with any sort of cookware needed as well as many items that you would need for meal preparation. I realized that I hadn't brought certain spices with me but I found exactly what I needed in the spice cabinet. The house is situated along the Piney River and even though the water was low during our visit it was great just getting to hang out by the water. Randy went out of his way to talk with my son and I about trout fishing in the river as well. As mentioned in the listing, the water pressure in the house is less than you would find in the city or even in a house with a deep artesian well. We didn't find this to be a problem but it's just something to be aware of if you have multiple guests. I visited with just my son and we just had to time our showers separately to allow adequate water flow for each of us. Pretty much you only want to have one stream of water going at a time.
