History of the Lodge

Over the years, The Lodge has changed hands multiple times and has been used in many different ways. It was originally a family residence, and then became a general store. Years ago, the original front door of the store was found on the roadside wall with old writings still visible indicating bushels of corn sold to customers. In the 1920's it became the Mayville Lodge, named after where it was located in the village of Bethel. Two rooms with a single shared bathroom were available for rent and meals were included. The Lodge housed visitors to the fairground, which was once located where the town airport, Colonel Dyke Field is now situated.

The Briar Lea Inn opened in 1994, after extensive renovations to the1850's post and beam constructed Georgian Farmhouse. The Inn consisted of six rooms and offered a delicious breakfast after a restful sleep. In 2005, an addition was made to the Inn, The Jolly Drayman Pub, to offer guests a unique dining and drinking experience similar to those found in Country Pubs. The name "Pub" is a shortened version of "Public House," a place for social gatherings of friends to eat and drink. “The Drayman” is the individual who drives the dray, or beer wagon.

Now in 2020 new owners have purchased this historical property and with some vision along with extensive renovations have made it The Luna)Blu Lodge. Offering guests an opportunity to rent an entire Inn/restaurant/bar creating new memories in a building that is rich in Bethel History.

Great gathering spot, great host
We gathered with three other families and throughly enjoyed the setup. The restaurant and bar gave our group plenty of space to gather and enjoy food and drinks together. Layout couldn’t be better. The kitchen and commercial dishwasher were a huge plus and made preparing food and cleaning up after our large group a breeze. The privacy with separate rooms and baths was amazing. Thanks for a great long weekend. Hope to come back soon.

Nice place to stay with big group of family/friends
We had a nice time in The Luna Blu lodge. All the bedrooms have attached bathroom and it was neat and tidy. Kitchen is big with vessels and tongs. . As the house has 2 floors we observed that the Wife connectivity was getting interrupted. Other than that we didn’t face any issues and the host was responding to our inquiries fast. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend

Great place for Large Groups
This old home was the perfect hub for my family while we were in Maine for a family wedding. We were up Wednesday-Monday, and this place became home. The property owner met with us upon our arrival to tour the grounds, explain the kitchen, and answer any questions we had. He was also in touch periodically throughout our stay, but not a nuisance. The property had great rooms, each had its own bathroom. The kitchen with absolutely amazing, and made our stay the perfect family trip. Being able to make homemade meals for a large group saved us time and money. The kitchen was not only clean and well laid out, but it was fully stocked with cook wear and serve wear. The bar was also a wonderful part of the property. The sink, refrigerators, ice machine, taps (although we didn’t use the taps), and every style glass and tool you could need really made our cocktails easy. The central dining room, bar dining room, and lounge room were all adjacent and convenient. No one in our group was ever without a seat to eat. We took full advantage of the seating on the deck as well. There was ample parking for our whole group, including one family who was hauling a camper. The only part of the property we didn’t take full advantage of was the fire pit in the back. The property was conveniently located close to grocery stores, convenient stores, Sunday River Brewery, and Sunday River Ski Resort. This property was great, and we definitely recommend it for larger groups and extended stays.

Excellent "guys ski weekend" at LunaBlu Inn
My friends and I held our annual “guys ski weekend” for 4 days, 3 nights. LunaBlu was excellent. We often rent condos/houses through VRBO, and they are generally fine, but the bedding & bathroom configurations are often inadequate. (Too many twin & bunk beds etc.) LunaBlu’s mix of rooms & suites was as good as it gets – many king & queen beds with lots of attached showers/baths were perfect for our group of 13. I expect LunaBlu would also be good for “extended family” type gatherings with multiple family units. After skiing at nearby Sunday River each day, we made ample use of the bar area which was fully outfitted with glasses & barware and everything you might need for beer or cocktails or whatever you might bring. We made good use of the kegerator & coffeemakers, too. The commercial kitchen also had everything necessary to cook meals for this large group, and clean up afterwards, including the “little things” like soaps, paper goods, utensils, etc. Plenty of parking and easy to find too. A very small suggestion would be to add some more “soft” lounge-type furniture in the bar, dining, or main TV areas for when people gather for extended times like watching movies, etc. But that’s a minor critique – the couch fits 4-5 people and there certainly were plenty of extra bench seats in the bar and movable chairs in the dining room – so that wouldn’t stop us from returning in the future. The owner was very prompt in responding to a few pre-stay inquiries, and proactively informing us about what we needed to know to enjoy our stay. In short, we had a blast. Thanks Jason and Kara!

AMAZING LODGE
Christmas 2022 at Luna)Blue was magical. Our family of 18 is a mixed generation group age 79 to 10 yrs old. We all feel in love with the Luna)Blu Lodge . I had just lost my husband of 53 yrs and the owner's wife reached out to me and shared her similar struggle to celebrate after the loss of her dad and how traveling to a different location lead them to purchasing Luna)Blu - hoping to share the lodge to accommodate large groups of families and friends to share good times and make memories. The Lodge did not disappoint! We never felt crowded - often breaking into small groups- hanging out in the bar area relaxing doing puzzles, board games in the dining room (that accommodated all 18 of us for family meals.) The game room was always in use with someone winning at PacMan. The living room is a very cozy place to sit by the fireplace, read and share stories. The Commercial Kitchen was enjoyed by our 2 family cooks. The kitchen is separated into Stations for: grilling, baking, a coffee bar, toasting/microwaving, salad prepping, dishes & cleaning area with an awesome "professional dishwasher". The kitchen is so large we seemed to congregate there a lot to help/supervise meal prep and never were in each others way Multi comfortable bedrooms with private baths What a Bonus! Of course some skied at near by Sunday River- but surprisingly we all were content to be together and enjoy the amenities at Luna)Blu. Again we had a Magical Xmas at Lun)Blu, making new memories and traditions. We will be back!

Excellent location for skiing !
We stayed at this former inn over the week between Christmas and New Years for a ski vacation with 4 families. There was plenty of space for everyone and a huge kitchen are to prep. The bar area was a great place to hang out and play games. There were a couple of issues when we first checked in but the property opener corrected them immediately. Also, someone in our party left something at the house and they mailed it back and don’t even charge shipping!

Great accommodations minutes from Sunday River
We went with 5 families to the Luna)blue and had an amazing trip. The location was great and was less than 10 mins from the lifts. The space was excellent for the size of our group. We were able to spread out through the weekend, while the kitchen, dining room and bar all worked great to accomodate the 18 of us whenever we came together for meals, drinks and games. Jason was a tremendous host who was very responsive and informative. This was our first time skiing at Sunday River and we will definitely look to book again the next time we come up!

Rob’s 60th Birthday
I rented the inn for my husband’s 60th celebration. We hosted 7 other couples, our dearest friends. Everyone had their own bedroom and bathroom. We used every space. The bar! The Dining area ! The living room by the fireplace for coffee in the morning. The kitchen was amazing for cooking breakfast and we served buffets there every evening, catered by “Good Food”, just up the street. We had awesome bonfires in the early evening. Jason and Kara were always available for us. Highly recommend LunaBlu!

Fantastic property, great location, incredible vacation memories
Our stay at the Luna)Blu Lodge was incredible. The property was perfect for our family get-together (18 total). The kids really enjoyed the game room (classic video games, chess, etc.) and the evening campfires out back. The commercial kitchen is incredible (fully stocked with cookware, dishware, silverware, spices, etc.)... we boiled a dozen local-caught lobster, roasted a pork shoulder, etc. all with ease and we kept the built-in coffee maker busy. The rooms were comfortable (we stayed in the summer and really appreciated the air conditioning in each room) and it was nice having access to private bathrooms and showers, and the washers/dryers. Jason could not have been more responsive or accommodating. He was happy to shift our reservations when asked, and gave us excellent recommendations on what to do (we really enjoyed the 10-mile kayak/canoe float down the Sunday River and the waterfall hike) and where to eat (Good Food was also a hit). We HIGHLY RECOMMEND the the Luna)Blu Lodge for large families looking to enjoy some time in Maine!
