About this property

Your own Petit Chateau near Sarlat, private pool and tower with battlements!

Just imagine your own 'petit chateau', set in the heart of the Dordogne, near medieval Sarlat, a region steeped in history going back for thousands of years. Your holiday home is situated just minutes from key attractions such as: Sarlat, one of France's best preserved medieval villages; Beynac and Castlenaud, two of the most famous chateaux in the region; the cliff hanging village of Roque de Gageac; the prehistoric sites of Les Eyzies and the famous caves of Lascaux. This, combined with 2 large rivers for canoeing; day and night markets and hundreds of cultural events means that your holiday can be as quiet or as full as you wish. You will have exclusive access to this very private property. While it is historic, built in 1749, it still has all the modern conveniences you are used to. En-suite bathrooms in every bed room, fully equipped kitchen, and free WIFI. Plus, this year we have a new summer pool cover to help maintain the water temperature for your comfort.

Set in an hectare of private gardens, your grande maison has a unique tower with open battlements where you can gaze out over the peaceful valley and watch the sun slowly setting. What better way to enjoy your evening aperitif?

Afterwards, lounge in the shadow of the massive stone tower, then fire up the barbecue and enjoy dinner by the water lily pond, stocked with frogs and fish. Or, as the mercury rises, simply relax by your own private pool, overlooking the valley, and catch up on that
reading you always meant to do. The breakfast area overlooks the pool at the front of the house where you can enjoy croissants, breads and yogurts from our famous artisanal boulangerie, 5 minutes walk away.

Built in the mid eighteenth century, it's thick walls a testament to older, more robust building standards, Maison Grise, nonetheless has every modern convenience. It's four spacious bedrooms, (sleeping 8 in double or twin configuration) all have an en-suite bathroom, to ensure luxury with privacy. Bath towels. pool towels and hairdryers are provided.

Living in history doesn't mean you have to abandon your modern comforts. Fibre Optic WIFI is provided, along with an IPOD/Iphone docking station, stereo speakers, and large digital flat screen TV. There is a washing machine, a drier and a spare freezer in the laundry (which also has a magnificent view over the valley), whilst the well equipped and spacious open plan kitchen will have you itching to release your inner Nigella (or Gordon for that matter). Outside, the lush gardens have plenty of shady areas to sit and enjoy a drink or just to gaze at the peaceful pastoral scene in the valley below. Total Privacy is assured as the owners do not live on site, and the pool area is not visible from the road.

There is also a Tennis court accross the road, free to use, along with a Petanque (French Bowls) area, and another Basketball/Football court behind.

Lovely week in St Andre d’Allas
The house is well equipped and spacious with lots of room to spread out and come together. We used the location to explore the region and had easy access to Sarlat, Beynac, Castelnaud, Domme etc. Highlight was a kayak trip on the Dordogne river past castles and beautiful villages. Also a day in Montignac to see Lascaux. We enjoyed the well marked hiking trials that left right from the house. There are too many beautiful places in the area to name and you could go to a market everyday if you want. After a day sightseeing we would sit out on the tower to enjoy apero and the sunset, then cook a meal. Bedrooms were spacious and everyone had an en suite bath. The front door initially gave us problems but we figured it out with some fidgeting. Weather didn’t permit us to take advantage of the pool. Next time!

Wonderful Stay in the Dordogne!
We had an absolutely delightful stay at this petite chateau in the heart of the Dordogne region! The property is exactly as described-charming, comfortable, and rich with history, but also equipped with all the modern amenities that made our stay incredibly relaxing. The views from the house are simply stunning, and we loved spending time in the various outdoor seating areas, soaking in the serene surroundings. The location couldn't have been more perfect. Nestled in a quaint village, it was peaceful yet so convenient. The local boulangerie was just a short away, and we started every morning with fresh pastries. The chateau was the perfect base for exploring the amazing Dordogne region and its' beautiful natural landscape, visiting picturesque villages, numerous chateaus, gorgeous gardens and eating delectable regional delicacies. We enjoyed every moment of our stay and would love to return again in the near future. Highly recommend!

Tucked In a Rural Commune
The stone house, created from a blacksmithy, was quite a change for us Americans. The older parts of the structure accommodated to modern life in fascinating ways. The setting is delightful, with gardens and a well-tended swimming pool on the grounds and a splendid view. We quickly began a custom of playing cards after dinner at the top of the turret, where we took in the late sunsets over the Perigord forest. Wildflowers bloomed along the roads, and gardening was in full swing. It was the time of hydrangeas and artichokes. Our initial happy visit at the nearby boulangerie finished with dashed expectations as we found that they would be closed the next two weeks for vacation. Charles, doubtless you had not idea, but we felt you had broken a promise! We found a few more places to pick up bread and pastries as we traveled in and out of Sarlat and over to Les Eyzies. Being near the caves was good, as they were one reason for being in the Dordogne. And canoeing was delightful and handy. There are plenty of markets, so that we could find one every day if we liked. The narrow D roads were picturesque everywhere we went, with the added feature of castles on many hills. We visited a few, including Puymartin and Les Milandes. All in all we returned happily to our little castle each evening, where many nights we fixed dinner in the well-equipped kitchen, and had our choice of beautiful dining settings.

Paradise in the Dordogne
We spent a lovely week in this beautiful historic property. From the terrace amazing views surrounded by nature .The magical sound of the scop owl and saw deer grazing in the field. Pool just the right temperature despite the unseasonably cool weather. Boulangerie was walking distance from the property lovely bread and patisserie daily. Downstairs bathroom really is room with a view got to be seen to be believed! Plenty to do in surrounding area whatever the weather, picturesque villages spoilt for choice. If interested in archaeology very informative tour at Cap Blanc rock shelter. I would recommend this petite chateau for a very memorable stay.

Dordogne trip
Beautiful location and perfect for 3 couples who like to travel together. There is a good boulangerie within a short walk and a fish and chips truck that was excellent that is set up once a week near there. The house has great outdoor spaces, but the weather did not cooperate for us to use the pool(which appears to be very nice). The house is in a lovely rural area but is an easy drive to Sarlat and other places of interest. The owner was great to deal with and we had no problems. We would strongly recommend staying here!

An enchanted September at Maison Grise...
marred by the absence of A/C. Méteo-France marked September the hottest since measurements began in 1900. I booked the house last September with family and friends for the entire month and the A/C was listed among its facilities/equipment. It is still to this day. Due to the high temperatures, the three upstairs bedrooms turned into veritable furnaces, and the downstairs area, which tended to be somewhat cooler, did not provide much relief either. To spare future renters the disappointment, I recommend to those who plan to visit the ‘petit château’ during the summer months, to first verify with the owner to ascertain that, in the meantime, an A/C system has been installed or book the house during the cooler months because a holiday in Maison Grise is truly a wonderful and unique experience with its shabby chic furniture and décor, magnificent view and lovely gardens and pool, and its exceptional location for touring a region that boasts of splendid castles and gardens, and fine cuisine. Kudos to the house managers, who are friendly and efficient. On a final note, during the first 2 weeks of September, the huge fig tree opposite the entrance to the house and the front verandah was bursting with ripe fruit and, therefore, attracted armies of wasps. They became a nuisance and could present danger to those allergic to stings.

Incredible home and incredible property in a lovely area. We walked for fresh bread and croissants every morning, explored the region and then refreshed in the pool and listened to the frogs in the pond every evening. The home has such incredible history and we spent the entire week exploring the Dordogne and Vezere river valleys, gardens and castles and falling in love with the medieval town of Sarlat. We hope to come back again soon.

My group of 4 really enjoyed staying in this Petit Chateau in early July. It was perfect as we visited the surrounding areas during the day and were able to cool off in the pool every evening. Exceeded our expectations!
We were very excited to stay here and our family had already nicknamed it the petit chateau! The house did not disappoint but rather exceeded our expectations. The communication with the owner was very easy and cordial. Having the rooftop to enjoy the view and watch the balloons in the evenings was very special and the kids really enjoyed it. The pool was a lovely temperature and in easy proximity to the house. There is no air conditioning in the house, which is to be expected for a building of this era but what is a nice surprise is you can leave the bedroom windows open most evenings without insects flying in and the interior cools off nicely. We met the property managers upon departure who were also great to deal with. My only suggestion would be a plush topper for the mattress and a larger pedestal fan in the Master bedroom but these are relatively minor observations. All in all and really enjoyable and successful stay… thank you Charles and Anne!

Petite Chateau
This is a wonderful property in a wonderful location. We really enjoyed our stay here. The only problem we had was that I was not able to access the key from the device they had set up when we checked in. When the property managers came to check us out, they had no problem with it so it was my unfortunate inability to figure it out. Luckily there was a back door open and we were able to get in. The only other thing to note is that sometimes the birds made a great deal of noise at night. Otherwise, we really enjoyed staying here and exploring Sarlat and the surrounding area. All very beautiful with many castles and beautiful scenery to enjoy.

Unanimous five stars from three generations
This house is quite unusual, with its spiral staircase up the tower to an amazing view over the Dordogne valley. It's comfortable, well equipped and family-friendly. We particularly liked the fact that upstairs is carpeted, while the thick walls and tiled floors downstairs meant it was always cool inside. It isn't isolated, with a small school and public tennis courts opposite, but it is secluded and at night the only sound was croaking frogs. Apart from swimming in the lovely pool, there's lots to do in the area for all ages (ours ranged from 4 to 70+) - we would love to go back.

The property is well-located in a small village near Sarlat, just a short drive to many attractions and a 10 min walk to a bakery, which I went to every morning to get croissants for breakfast. The property has a lot of character and great outdoor spaces. The best part was the pool which we really enjoyed during the heat wave we had. The owners were very responsive to any questions.

Amazing stay
Where to start? The amazing view? The huge pool? The turret to watch the sunset and hot air balloons from? The bathroom for every bedroom? Falling to sleep with the sounds of sheep and frogs? This house is amazing. It was also clean, which we have found other “old houses” not to be in the past. The location is great as well. Note that the pool is not heated, so at the end of June it was still slightly chilly, but still warm enough to enjoy. There is no AC, but due to the thick walls of the house it never got too hot inside. Would rent again in a heartbeat.

The property is better than the pictures and description implies - some amazing views from the tower and generally such a special place for enjoying a slower and quieter pace of life! There’s a space for every occasion and so many lovely quiet spots to just escape. We were very lucky with the weather, especially for the area in mid-October, but the property was absolutely brilliant. Hope to return next year!

A property and location that exceed expectations
The photos don't do the house, garden and view justice. This is an incredible property with innumerable quirks and gorgeous nooks and crannies. Highlights include: the roof terrace; the view from the master bedroom and it's phenomenal bathroom; the pond with its community of frogs and fishes; the pool area; the plethora of choice for places to sit outside and enjoy a drink or eat a meal. My daughter got great pleasure out of seeing sheep from the nearby farm come up towards the edge of the garden, and out of spotting the hot air balloons on the horizon. The location is also excellent. The wonderful towns of Sarlat and Beynac are just a 15 min drive away, and so many of the region's best attractions are very close by. When we wanted to find a pony ride for my daughter at short notice we realised there are scores of equestrian centres within a half hour drive! The owners are very discreet but helpful and approachable. Everything went very smoothly for us. The only negative I feel I should mention is the cat hair... I'm allergic to cats so I suffered a bit in the areas where there was cat hair in evidence (rugs and sofas). This is easily rectified and I'm sure the owners will do so quickly. If you want to add a bit of magic to your holiday I'd highly recommend the maison grise.
