Hotel Stratford, despite my advance, confirmed reservation through Expedia, had no room available for me, and instead gave me a room in a "sister" hotel called the Bartlett, which was about a half a block away. It appeared the hotel was undergoing renovations. It was shabby, cramped, with the barest of furnishings. I'm not even sure there was mattress on the bed, it was low to the ground and very firm, like a box spring. The front desk was unmanned, and one accessed the main door, a second security door and the elevator using a room key. When I originally checked in at the Stratford, and they advised of the hotel change, I asked them how much for the room, and they advised me it would be no charge and advised me that they would initiate a refund through Expedia, but that would take sometime to process. It seems like some type of scam... You book one hotel, then when you arrive, the switch you to a lesser property. I stopped back to the Strttford front desk a couple of other times and each time heard them doing the same thing to other customers with reservations. If the Stratford does not request a refund of room charges, I am requesting a refund. I feel that I was mislead and cheated out of the hotel and room that I had originally reserved and booked. Thank you.

This place is more of a hostile than a hotel or motel. It definitely shouldn't be listed as a hotel. Almost no amenities. No vending to even get water. No ice machines. No closets. No dressers. Just a room with a bed and a bathroom.

Good but could be better…
Good location, nice rooms. Major complaint no real veneration the whole room smelt like mildew. Lots of dust on fan, windows, window screens, blinds, could have been from hallway carpet? Or outside when window is open. However was dusty upon entry before opening window to air out mildew smell. Beware if you have allergies.

Things you need to know when you stay here: - No coffee at all in the hotel or rooms. Great walkable spots all around the streets - No fridge in room or in hotel for guest use - No view - we looked at a brick wall but we didn't care! - No closet or dresser - you get 3 hooks and 6 hangers for your clothes. - The twin bed room is just big enough, think a large euro room. - You should be very comfortable with the person you stay with as there is NO sound proofing at all between the bathroom and the bedroom. A barn door does not cover any sounds. We turned on the tv whenever someone was using the bathroom. - It was super clean and updated! Beds were comfy. This was exactly what we wanted at a pretty dang good price - location was superb, right in Union Square and easy to walk to BART and surrounding areas. My sister and I loved the twin bed set up, the room had just what we needed and not a touch more. Purified water dispenser in the lobby. The free drink coupons for the bar around the corner was a nice touch and we took them up on it. I wanted a clean room with a nice bed for not too much money and this is exactly what we got. Can't wait to stay there again!

The hotel is in a central area with many restaurants and bars within walking distance. However, the hotel itself does not have parking available. If you have a rental, you need to park in a nearby parking structure. Unfortunately, the area has a lot of people experiencing homelessness which doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in leaving the car somewhere unmonitored. The most unpleasant experience during my stay was with the noise from protestors. Multiple groups of protesters were under my window protesting wages from a different hotel. The protesters used drugs and loud microphones to get their message across which made getting a good nights rest impossible for me.

Amazing location, close to cable cars and many other transport options. Walgreens across the road for anything you need. Rooms were cleaned and daily and spotless, towels replaced etc. Maybe a little noisy like could hear my neighbours beside/above/below but barely, I was tired from walking so it didn’t interrupt my sleep and I’m a light sleeper. I’d recommend Pine rest Diner nearby for an early breakfast. And don’t go to power street cable car stop and queue, walk right out of the hotel and get on at the next stop, or just go before 8am!
