For the price in China, this hotel was not worth it. A water bed? Also, the shower did not properly work and the front desk staff was pretty unhelpful. Wouldn't have expected anything too fancy, but for 20-30$, you could easily find similar accommodation in Qingdao.

A unique experience
I always return to this hotel. It is truly a unique experience. Every room is different. The staff is friendly and there is always someone that speaks English. The facility is getting a little bit old, but it is very well maintained. There are many excellent restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. The buffet breakfast is one of the best that I have seen in China.

Great stay in a cool hotel
We read a mixed set of reviews expecting it to be beautiful but musty, but instead were treated to a lovely and creatively designed room, very clean furnishings and lovely staff! We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay of three nights here, it's in a safe and good district, and the hotel itself has a very pleasant atmosphere. Sometimes the amenities were not completely well furbished, but we only had to notify the staff and they very quickly and courteously helped us out.

Great location and tries hard but needs more work
Location is great and hotel has lots of character. Service at the front desk is nice and helpful. But their cleaning staff needs more training - details in room not cleaned well and they tried to say I used one of their lotions which I definitely did not. If you get room on the first floor, ask for a dehumidifier which helps a lot. Overall, for price and location and character I would still recommend!

An inexpensive place to stay in Qingdao
The hotel is interesting, but the room was small and the air conditioning did not cool the room. The bed had only a comforter and no sheet. Checking in was a bit difficult, since there were no English speaking staff, and minor/irrelevant issues seemed to be exaggerated. In the end, everything worked out OK, but it seemed more difficult than most other hotels that we used.

One of a kind hotel.
This is a very unusual hotel. Almost every room is different, and the hotel is decorated and furnished in traditional Chinese style. It has a much more intimate, friendly feel than the major hotels. The service is excellent, and there is usually someone that speaks English. They have a breakfast that is about the best I ever saw in China. There is a great variety of Chinese and western breakfast food. The location is good, with many restaurants in the area. It is about a 1 km walk to the ocean near the Qingdao Sailing Center, site of the 2008 Olympic sailing events. It is easy to get a taxi by walking out to Minjiang Road. Don't be confused by the hotel address which is Minjiang 3 Road. I have stayed in this hotel six times on trips to Qingdao, and I am very satisfied.

Extremely nice staff. Most didn't know English well but a few did and went out of their way to help me. The room and hotel looks awesome and location is pretty good!

Lovely place and lovely staff
Although the exterior is a little plain, the hotel is lovely inside, with many beautiful art objects. The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. Someone is always around who speaks adequate English. The hotel is within walking distance of the bus line and Western restaurants. The breakfast is very Asian, so not everybody will want to buy it. The only caution I have is that my room was VERY small, with no view at all (more hotel rooms faced my window). It was fine for me, a single traveler, but even a couple, I think, would need more space. I would definitely stay here again.

Chinese style
Excellent. Most of Chinese hotels which face streets are very noisy. This hotel is located in the complex. One complaint is that a front pond smell fish.

Beautiful, Unique & Artistic Hotel
The Laozhuancun China Community Art and Culture Hotel is like a Contemporary Arts Gallery and the restaurant is like a Circular Music Hall. Avant-garde architecture, every direction you look is a work of art, rich in local culture, interesting artifacts and the lobby vibrant in the Shandong provincial colours. Buffet breakfast or buffet dinner for in-house guest is the price of a cup of coffee in Sydney, extensive a-la-carte menu available as well. You'll have to be crazy not to eat at the restaurant. I had three breakfasts there and I love the variety of food. I booked two nights in a King room. Before I left, I asked for a tour of the rooms which were all so different and so tasteful. I deliberately asked for an attic room for when I returned to Qingdao for one extra night. The whole ceiling in the bedroom was slanted glass which took a bit to get used to at first but I enjoyed that attic experience. The sheets and pillows were beautiful, the room new, comfortable and very artistic. All the staff were very helpful and sensitive to my needs - especially Yang Luying from reception. It was my first trip to Qingdao and I travelled alone and I was late rushing to the airport for a long international flight back to Sydney via Singapore. The service of Laozhuancun Hotel was first class. I was so glad I found such a beautiful and unique hotel.

the hotel was ok..however, there was a problem with the air-conditioning in the room. The breakfast buffet is great value but i found the dinner a bit expensive. Limited choice of TV channels (no BBC or CNN).

Great experience for first timer to China. The hotel staff was very friendly and most spoke a bit of English. The assistant director is from the States and was more than kind and helpful. Made a big difference in my enjoyment of the trip. The breakfast in the attached restaurant was a wonderful buffet style with a wide variety of choices. Would definitely stay here on next trip!

Enjoyed the restaurant in the hotel
Overall, a nice change from the typical business type hotel. This hotel is infused with a lot of china culture elements throughout the hotel decor. Room was small but acceptable for a short 2 night stay. Enjoyed the buffet breakfast as the spread was rather good for a local hotel. Also ate a dinner at the same restaurant and enjoyed it too. Prices were reasonable , food was nice and there was also nightly performences of Chinese opera.

Location is ok, though it will be much better once the metro system currently being constructed is complete. We arrived the first day of the Qingdao Beer Festival from the train station at 5pm on a Friday, and it took us 2 hours via taxi to get to the hotel! Traffic was terrible. Hotel staff helped us figure out what public buses to take, and though they could only provide a chinese language map, the map included bus routes on it which we found essential. Housekeeping service was hit and miss. One day they didn't empty our garbage, clean our used tea mugs, or give us new large bath towels, even though they took the ones I had hung to dry to reuse. When we left on a Tuesday at 10am, hotel staff told us they couldn't call us a taxi to the train station due to the beer festival. We found that hard to believe, but weren't able to hail one down on the street ourselves. Luckily we had enough time to take the bus and traffic wasn't as bad as when we arrived. The hotel provided us with tickets for the breakfast buffet, which was pretty good, but every morning we got hassled, getting asked for two tickets even though we were only given one per day. Language barrier was a big problem. We ended up not having to pay extra for both of us to eat breakfast, but it was really annoying that it was an issue every morning and caused so much confusion. The hotel includes a tea house and artist shops, which was nice. Lots of good restaurants in the area.

Nice hotel that need a little more maintenance
Booked a "Harmony residence" room from 12 - 16 July. As I was traveling alone, room size was alright. However, the King bed was actually 2 single bed joined together and the spring of one of the bed was making noise, hence I can only sleep on one side. One of the hanging light was buzzing away and I have to turn it off. Television channels "run" when I was turning down the volume and the shower head drip water once a while after shower makes it difficult to sleep sometimes. Shower and toilet was separated which is good but shower area only comes in curtain which might not be convenient if you are traveling with friends (my local friend have to wait for me in the lobby while I took a quick bath). The room that I was given was a facing internal building room. There is a distance from the window to the wall and I was able to open the window, plus I was on the 3rd floor, hence there was enough daylight and I have no problem with this. Wi-fi in the room was strong and the general one in the lobby is good as well. Service of staff was good and I have no problems with them. They even serve my local friends with tea when he was waiting for me in the lobby. Although my room comes with breakfast but I do not have the chance to taste it as I woke up late.

Great Hotel with a lot of local flavours infused
The Hotel's restaurant serve good Shandong cuisines. The only issue - they only issue breakfast coupons for 1 room (not by how many people in the room).
