About this property

The Casita at St Francis de Sales Church, Hatch, NM - Experience the History

Have you had a chance to sleep in a Church before? Well now you can. The Casita is attached to the Historical adobe church, through its sacristy. You can make this a spiritual experience, or 'just' a unique experience! The Church property plays out over an entire city block. It is available for contemplative walks, watching the sunrise, observing the sunset; playing a game of horseshoes or trying your luck at badminton.

The Casita is a 700 square foot open living area. You have 2 queen beds and one daybed to choose from. There is a kitchenette consisting of a sink, microwave, 2 burner hotplate, refrigerator, coffee pot, toaster, dishes, and utensils. The Casita opens up onto the large Spanish courtyard which is shared with the Rectory building. The Spanish courtyard consists of multiple sitting areas, as well as a gazebo available for your use. The Casita also has its own private patio from which to watch the sunsets and use for your enjoyment. The private patio is near a garden which you may putter in, if you so desire! The Casita has a full bathroom with a shower but no tub, and you will have access to a second (public) half bath.

The property has a manager on site at all times in the Rectory building. Since the property has many nooks and crannies dating from the 1860's with additions and improvements since that time, guidance may be needed to complete your experience. The grilling patio and kiva fireplace located near the front of the Rectory, is also available for your use and enjoyment.

Hatch is known as the Chile Capital of the World. Each Labor Day, the Chile Festival is held over that Saturday and Sunday. Chile enthusiasts from all over the world come to participate in the "red or green" event. During non-Chile Festival times, the surrounding areas are calmer. We have fields of growing cotton, wheat, onions, as well as Chiles. The pecan orchards provide resplendent towers of green in this lush valley. A drive down Highway 185 between Hatch and Las Cruces is one of the more scenic drives around.

The Church compound resides 1.5 miles south of Hatch in a village called Rodey. The Church's bell tower can be seen from Highway 185. You will turn on El Colorado Avenue into Rodey, and go 2 blocks to the Church. Find your way through the front gates and you will be met by the property manager.

Many attractions are available in the area. Truth or Consequences provides hot springs for soaking enthusiasts to the beaches of Elephant Butte reservoir to cool your toes. Silver City is an old-west town near the entrance to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. And how often do you get to sled down white sand? Well you can at White Sands. Petroglyphs abound in the state; just find your starting point. Dripping Springs near Las Cruces heralds a gentle hiking trail to see a piece of history in the Organ Mountains. These are but a few of things to do in the immediate surrounding area. Ask us, we can help you in your destination selection.

The Casita has heat and air conditioning. It also has heat provided by a wood burning stove with backup electrical heaters. Due to the thickness of the adobe walls, finding the internet connectivity can be tricky, but connection is assured within the Rectory walls. Cell phone service is good in the area.

Due to the age of the buildings, most rooms have slight steps between them, so we are not wheelchair accessible. You will need to watch your step at all times. And this is very tough to do, as there is so much beauty to see within and outside the walls of this historic property. We hope that you will enjoy it.

Absolute Gem!
What an amazing, unique experience for our family. The main living quarters were well-appointed and the grounds/church were something something special if not spiritual. Celeste was 100% cool and there for us when needed for questions about the place or recs for food in Hatch. Would stay again in a heartbeat and you should too!!

Diamond in the Rough!
My husband and I drove to Rodey for a one-night get-away and found this gem. Spent our time walking the beautiful grounds and driving the Geronimo Trail. The history of that area could be seen not only in the de-commissioned church, but also the ghost towns and army fort in the area. Thank you, Celeste, for sharing your beautiful diamond in the rough of Rodey!

This was a unique property. There is one room guest room that could easily sleep a family of 5. It's large, appointed with quaint details that are authentic...and it has the feel of rectory...which it was. Arriving to find no one here but a room that was left open for us was different, but I get it. Maybe a note on the door would have been nice. But overall we liked it and slept well. We're just traveling through, but we are in the area at least once a year. Would consider a return stay if it worked out.

What a wonderful and unique accommodation.
My husband and I chose this VRBO because of its unique character and because of its stellar reviews and photographs. We were not disappointed. We were greeted by a smiling Celeste who gave us a tour of the property before we settled in. In a nutshell, this VRBO is exceptional. Our unit was spacious, well appointed and perfect. We had access to the entire grounds including the deconsecrated church. Our stay was perfect in every way. Two things to note: the rental does not have TV and internet connection was spotty. We didn't care, We fell in love with this unit. The surrounding area has few restaurants, thus its important to do your homework before arrival in terms of dinner choices. If we could give this place 10 stars, we would.

Gorgeous Historic Property
Stayed here a night with my Mom and sister while driving up from West Texas to White Sands. Beautiful place. Celeste was super friendly and was kind enough to give us a tour of the property. We really enjoyed exploring and learning about the history of the church. There is also a vegetable garden with grapes, tomatoes and other fruits that we were allowed to pick from, so we left with fresh produce that morning. We had a great time here and would definitely stay again.

Unique and Unforgettable
Such a cool place, full of fascinating history. A former Catholic church turned event space/B&B, with multiple small shrines on the property, a bell tower, even an intact, still-functional sanctuary. Although the building itself is 100+ years old, our space had all modern conveniences (except TV, which was fine with us). Celeste and Alice were lovely, warm and generous. Recommend unequivocally!

A must stay place!
A beautiful place, wonderful hosts, great location. As soon as we arrived, we realized that we had to come back for a longer stay. The property itself, the former historic St Francis de Sales church, it worth a detailed exploration. It has been turned into a very welcoming, comfortable and charming place. The area around, the historical Hatch, only a couple of miles away is the next gem. The chile fields and pecan orchards are everywhere. Many fun shops and restaurants to enjoy the local flavors.

Where to start... As my family is dwindling in size, for the Thanksgiving Holiday I decided to take a roadtrip with my mother, with the main goal being to visit the White Sands National Monument. I broadened my radius for a place to stay, and, I like to think a divine intervention led me to this listing... A more special place to spend Thanksgiving with mom I cannot imagine! I love history and Churches (couldn't come up with an accurate count for how many I have wandered around in in the World), so being able to read deeds and historical information (I am a real estate paralegal) and walk down a hall to investigate the details of the church (my favorite detail, the carving of the word "Travail" in a doorframe) was worth a lot on its own. Then, you get to the current owners, Celeste and Alice, who are just two of the most pleasant, cheerful and helpful people around, and you feel even luckier. The casita itself has everything you will need to feel "at home!". Then, you get to the town of Hatch, where you will encounter shops filled with more chili options than you could imagine manned by lovely and hard working shop owners. And, last but not least, it is the perfect base for day trips to Truth or Consequeces (who doesn't love hot springs... Riverbend found by me and seconded by hosts was divine) and my main goal, White Sands National Monument. If you are looking for a special place to call home on a trip, do not hesitate to book the casita, staying as long as you can!

Very original, great atmosphere
I picked this place because it looked 'different'. And different it certainly was. The Casita is very large and very comfortable and it does not mention having a stove but it does have a small one. Just large enough for your egg and tea in the morning. A better cook than me could probably cook a complete decent meal on it too. There are several beds and the one I chose had a very nice, firm mattrass. When I arrived Celeste, who was great to communicate with from the start, showed me around. I had been afraid that I would not have enough privacy (a great issue with me) but I need not have worried. I had my own private patio - which was large! - and I could also sit in the large patio without being disturbed. I took loads of pictures. Of course I visited the church which is very beautiful. And two cute kittens visited *me* and I only discovered that they had hidden my favourite slippers when I was about to leave the next day and could not find them. They were under the sofa so I suppose the kittens had fun hiding them when I was outside reading a book. But I am a cat person! So no 'bad kittie!' from me! When they were not hiding stuff but cuddling up to me I could not have been happier. And when they did do the hiding they reminded me: that's what cats do when they are still babies. I have a senior cat now so I had almost forgotten. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes something different. And who likes peace and quiet and an overall feeling of well-being.

If you’re looking for an extra special out of the ordinary place near Hatch, NM this is it!!
We stayed here for the annual Chile Challenge, Four Wheeling and Rock crawling event. That’s put on by the Las Cruses 4X4 club at Caballo State Park. The accommodations were excellent. The atmosphere was incredible, the grounds were immaculate and the history is outrageous. The owners Alicia & Celeste went above and beyond to ensure we had the best away from home experience ever. By the end of the stay we felt like friends.

Talk about unuques, comfortable and charming. The casita was very large and attached to a beautiful church and very spacious Courtyard. The hostess and her sister we're both charming and hospitable. The town is very small but s great place if you want to go to nmsu or Tijuana for the day. This would also be a great venue for a wedding or family reunion. Thank you for everything Celeste.
