Lovely Hunt Country 3-bedroom cottage with large deck & firepit on 3 acres

This charming cottage on three acres is located 8 miles south of Middleburg near the picturesque village of The Plains, VA. We are in the heart of Hunt Country (wine and horse country) in the foothills of the Appalachians, 50 miles west of DC on 66. The home is perfect for a quiet getaway. Renovated thoughtfully, it retains its charm and 19th-century stone foundation. The fully equipped kitchen/dining room has an open plan while the sunroom opens to a large deck overlooking the expansive lawn. We have satellite tv in the living room and a smart TV upstairs. We have unlimited high-speed internet through T-mobile.

Three of the beds are trundles that pull out from the twin beds (all real mattresses). The one downstairs is a pop-up. The location of the property is ideal for hiking (close to the Appalachian Trail), biking, and horseback riding. Artists will appreciate the rolling hills, historic architecture, and miles of old stone fences. Enjoy the many surrounding wineries, antiquing, orchards, and fine dining establishments nearby, or pack a picnic (we provide a basket and blanket) and enjoy "Twilight Polo" up close every Saturday evening throughout the summer in The Plains' own Great Meadow where the VA Cup steeplechases are held annually. The farmer's market in The Plains is each Sunday from spring to fall. Boarding and horseback riding lessons are possible across the road at Madcap Farm. Horses neighing or roosters crowing in the distance will remind you that it is time to relax and take in the country air.

You'll have the entire house (first and second floor) and, of course, the deck and the 3 acre lawn. We provide both indoor and outdoor games (like horse shoes and croquet) and have over 250 movies (plus kids movies) and DVD players on both floors. The basement may be used for laundry purposes only and is off-limits to children. Although we have beds for eight, it is a cottage, so we recommend no more than six adults.

Although we may not always be there to greet you, we are a text or phone call away. I have provided a house manual which lists recommended restaurants, coffee shops, parks and outdoor activities, house info and emergency info.

We love staying at the house when time allows so you will find that we leave some basics there for our use - and for yours if needed. The kitchen cupboards have staples and spices, oils, etc. In the refrigerator you'll find condiments, salad dressings, etc. Likewise, in the bathroom medicine cabinets, you will find some necessities so you won't need to run to the store for that little thing you forgot. Also, we do have a security camera in the driveway since the property is not always occupied.

PLEASE NOTE: Our base price is listed above, but we do charge $20 per person per night for additional guests after the first two. Children under 2 are free. We are not too far from the road so we expect that children (and/or dogs) will be watched. We welcome guests planning a relaxing weekend but we ask that binge drinkers and wild partiers please book elsewhere.

A house manual and area guide can also be found at foxcrosscottage.com.

Wonderful and relaxing respite from the city
Set in rolling fields and woods of Virginia's horse country, Rob and Lina's house is warm and inviting. We enjoyed the countryside, dining and shopping in Marshall, Middleburg and The Plains, and came back to the outdoor fire pit in the evenings. We plan on coming back again.

A Perfect Cottage for our Family of 3.
We had an absolutely wonderful weeklong stay at Fox Cross Cottage. The property was immaculately clean, cozy, quiet, and restful. We stayed 7 nights. We went into DC a couple of days, then visited numerous Civil War sights/battlefields the rest of the week. We loved the surrounding countryside. We drove 4 days off of the main thoroughfares so we could immerse ourself in the area while reaching each destination. As for the cottage, the beds were comfortable, the furniture was plenty and comfortable, and the location was fantastic. We didn't have time for any homecooked meals or outside grilling, so I can't comment on any of those things, but the kitchen was very well-stocked with everything I could think of needing. Lastly, working with the owners was a fabulous, relaxing process. We simply couldn't have asked for better hosts. All in all, I can't recommend this property enough for a small group. Granted, it sleeps 8 total, but that would have felt a bit cramped to me. I personally think it's best for a group of 6 or less, but everyone is different.

Two wonderful weeks
The property was exactly as expected from the advertising. Huge yard and quaint lovely house. We had family visit a couple times and it was very comfortable. One lady said it was like driving into a movie set when she first saw the property. We enjoyed the wineries and a few restaurants in the area. Communication with the owner was abundant and appreciated.

We spent three months at Foxcross Cottage while we searched for a new home here in Virginia to be closer to family. I cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our time at this lovely, quaint and cozy home which is nestled the beautiful bucolic area of historic northern Virginia. Our hosts were absolutely wonderful and couldn’t have made us feel more welcome! You won’t be disappointed!! Enjoy!

Peaceful perfection
Fox Cross Cottage was a perfect getaway for peace and relaxation. The home is larger than the pictures portray and was very clean. The true gem for us was the large back yard and fire pit area. Although the home is set close to the road, there was great shrubbery as a barrier so when we were outside we couldn’t see the road and felt comfortable with our dog off leash... although she’s not a wanderer either. Location was great for close trips to wineries, middleburg, and we drove about an hour to Luray Caverns which was really awesome. Wonderful stay!

Absolutely Amazing.
We rented Fox across Cottage for the winter during the pandemic to escape the city. From Day 1...it was exactly what we needed. Actually, even before Day 1. Lina and Robert were absolutely wonderful. They were always available to answer any questions, etc. And they have put so much love into Fox Cross...you can’t help but notice and love it all. Fox Cross became more than just an escape for my friends and me...it became a part of our pod family! We will miss it so much. But we will be back. Do yourself a favor and rent this cottage. You won’t regret it. And chances are you’ll be back!

Beautiful retreat in The Plains
All I can say is: the photos alone don't do this place justice. My family and I had such a wonderful stay here, just the reprieve we needed during this time-melts-together COVID age. With the kids doing their classes online and with us having meetings every day, we were at first hesitant about heading away from our usual routine, but we needed a break - and this lovely house fit the bill to a T. Lina and Rob were wonderful to work with - really warm, friendly, responsive - and it was my correspondence with them that really tipped the hat of perfection to our stay. It really felt like we were staying in a home filled with love and care, not just at a mere rental. This house provided everything we needed: comfortable beds, internet connection, kitchen with all the tools we needed to cook our meals, and a gorgeous field out back where our family dog loved chasing down the deer/bunnies/chipmunks that came to visit - who, decided after some initial encounters with her, chose to vacation elsewhere for the balance of our week. (They even had a little pet bed out and ready for her that fit her perfectly!) Greeting the rising sun every morning together as it cast long lines across the field, enjoying our leisurely walk as dew gave way to warming air, seeing my kids having so much fun running around outside with our dog while I worked, and relaxing as the day's glow faded to dark - everything about this place just helped melt a lot of the stress away. And the house situated equidistant between The Plains and Marshall made it super easy for us to head one way or another for wonderful treats. As soon as we can, we most certainly will be back there again.

Quaint cottage conveniently located
Had a wonderful stay at the cottage, where every detail appears to have been thought of and everything is in excellent condition and well-maintained. I enjoyed the convenient location partway between The Plains and Marshall and it was an easy stopping off point to head farther out to visit other parts of the area, including Middleburg and little Washington. I rated the location a 4 instead of 5 due to the busy nature of the road and lack of shoulder; I found I couldn’t easily walk my dog directly from the house - although the property itself certainly had ample room to take her out. (See note below about nearby park.) The owners thoughtfully provided a notebook with many recommendations for area eateries, drives and hikes. I especially appreciated the nearby N. Fauquier County Park where I walked my older dog in the mornings and evenings; a family visiting with young children would also enjoy the playground there. Part of my stay included a “girls weekend” - my friends and I enjoyed dinner on the back deck and talking late into the evening by the fire pit. We loved the perfect skewers for s’mores too! The kitchen had everything we needed. One note for groups is the the upstairs bathroom is located in the master bedroom, so perhaps more ideal for families to share the upstairs bedrooms. What a comfortable and restful experience. I hope to return for another stay!

Amazing stay in beautiful hunt country
We loved the house. It is perfectly situated between the quaint towns of Marshall and the Plains and also very close to Middleburg. It was beautifully decorated with such nice antiques and artistic touches. It was the perfect peaceful getaway. The house was well stocked with absolutely everything you could need for a short or longer stay including a kitchen with every cooking appliance you could ever need, a washer, dryer and tons of DVDs full of fantastic movies. The surroundings are amazing. And Lina the owner is an absolute GEM! She was so kind and responsive. We had a special circumstance and she was so incredibly helpful from the moment we inquired about booking. Absolutely the best VRBO stay have ever had. I can't wait to visit the house again.

Sweet and cozy cottage
My husband and I LOVED our time at Fox Cross Cottage--what a special place! We literally felt as though we were staying with friends--that's how comfortable Lina and Robert's attention to detail made us feel. One of my favorite parts of our stay was looking all the little "moments" throughout the cottage--you can tell Lina and Robert are artists by the way the home is curated (my fav painting was the spools of thread). Though we arrived a couple of days after Christmas, I so appreciated having the Christmas tree, as it extended the holiday spirit and offered more little treasures to look at. :) Lina and Robert are super gracious hosts, kindly leaving us a bottle of wine, which we thoroughly enjoyed, and I plan on framing the notecard Lina left us as a sweet reminder of our time at Fox Cross (look closely . The cottage's location is fantastic--quick ride into Marshall for all kinds of great food, very close to Middleburg for shops and more restaurants, lots of breweries and wineries nearby, and only a 25-minute drive to our favorite hiking spot, Sky Meadows Park. We were so sad to leave, but we'll definitely be back again!

Our stay at the cottage was wonderful! It is in a great location close to many wineries and lovely downtown. The owners are wonderful. They had the cottage decorated with lovely Christmas decorations and a beautiful Christmas tree. The sunroom was so cozy and we loved the heated floor. The cottage was very clean. A great bonus that linens and bath towels were provided. We enjoyed visiting the area. Marshall is just a short distance and what a great town. We purchased many delicious baked items at the Red Truck Rural Bakery. A most stop if you are in that area. We also went to Luray Caverns for a special evening with a candle light walk through the caverns with carolers singing at various locations. It was beautiful. The cottage met all our needs and we will definitely visit again.

Charmed Cottage in a splendid setting
There was never a doubt we lucked into a getaway perfectly accessible for our family Thanksgiving reunion and planned scenic area treks! Complementary restorative amenities at Fox Cross Cottage at beginning and end of our days were thoroughly guest-worthy. One could not help admire FXCs personal collection and talented art-full surroundings. Dwelling in our own vintage house, we appreciated the details in restoration updating this picturesque compound. Garden herbs to savor in menus prepared in a complete kitchen; flexible check-in and such generous communications were a special welcome alongside owner treats ! Comfortably furnished in the hospitable manner of Hunt Country style, we recharged as many hours in its cozy setting as we could. Roasting marshmallows under sunsets we wished were longer, parting we vowed return and meantime share with friend -- who MUST stay themselves !

Charming cottage in a great location!
Fox Cross Cottage is a wonderful property for a weekend getaway. Three of us stayed here while visiting a friend who had moved to the area and it felt like home right from the start. The cottage is beautifully decorated and has a fully stocked kitchen with everything you need, whether you're just making coffee in the morning or preparing a complete meal. The bedrooms are very comfortable and the bathrooms look newly renovated but still have the old world charm that makes this home so delightful. The owners were so easy to work with and kind to leave basic toiletries, coffee, and anything else you may need. The welcoming bottle of wine was very thoughtful as well. Lastly, the location is great, with the town of The Plains less than a five minute drive. For such a small town, there are interesting shops and very good restaurants to enjoy. The area also has many wineries that can be reached a short distance away. There are no surprises with this listing; the home is exactly as pictured, but even more charming in person. We would definitely stay again when returning to the area. Thank you to the owners for making it all so easy, from arrival to departure!
