This small village owes its name to the abbey of the Madeleine:
High place of pilgrimage since the twelfth century, the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene Vézelay stands atop a high hill overlooking the Cure, bordering the Morvan Regional Park. In 1146, St Bernard of Clairvaux preached there the second crusade, and it was the place where Richard Lionheart and Philip Augustus made an appointment for the departure of the third crusade. Below this building are winding alleys lined with old houses with carved doors, turreted staircases, mullioned windows. The ancient ramparts, which protected the city in the Middle Ages, are flanked by seven round towers and form today an interesting walk that goes up from the fairground, at the foot of the hill, to the esplanade of the castle, behind Basilica.
