Off-Grid Clean, Cozy Log Cabin 4.95 Star Rating 86 Reviews

Welcome to The Hideout, your secluded off-grid log cabin retreat surrounded by the natural beauty of a private forest preserve and wildlife sanctuary. This exceptional property, boasting a remarkable 4.95-star rating with 86 reviews on Airbnb, offers a unique opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Situated on 73+ acres of pristine land adjoining the vast Hiawatha National Forest, The Hideout provides a truly remote experience even by UP (Upper Peninsula) standards. With only a handful of year-round residents in the area, you can expect unparalleled tranquility and privacy during your stay. As you navigate the adventurous road, which spans 2 miles from the nearest pavement, you'll immediately feel a sense of adventure and anticipation.

Nature enthusiasts will be delighted to discover three picturesque lakes—Slowfoot, Dam, and Cranberry—within walking distance of the cabin. Whether you're a fan of fishing, birdwatching, or simply immersing yourself in the serene surroundings, these pristine lakes offer endless opportunities for exploration and connection with nature.

Just a short 7-minute drive from the cabin, you'll find the recently reopened Midway General Store. This incredible establishment stocks all the essentials you may need and more, making it a convenient resource for supplies during your stay. Additionally, you can fuel up your vehicle and treat yourself to a delicious ice cream at their on-site shop.

For those seeking further adventure and local attractions, the town of Munising is a scenic 30-minute drive away. This vibrant destination boasts stunning views of Lake Superior, sandy beach spots, captivating waterfalls, excellent dining options, and charming shops. Nearby, you'll find renowned attractions such as Pictured Rocks, Eben Ice Caves, Kitch-it-Kipi, and a vast network of hiking and snowmobile trails. Snowmobile trail UP7 can be accessed just a few miles down CR 440, adding to the convenience for snowmobiling enthusiasts.

Upon entering the cabin, you'll find a well-equipped kitchen featuring a propane four-burner cook stove with an oven, a propane refrigerator, and a propane-heated water system. With all the necessary supplies at your fingertips, you can effortlessly prepare meals to satisfy your appetite after a day of adventure.

The full bathroom offers modern amenities, including a pedestal sink, a bathtub with a shower, and an indoor toilet. Rest assured; your comfort is of utmost importance.

The living room is a haven of casual comfort, allowing you to unwind and relax after your exciting escapades. During winter months, cozy up by the wood stove nestled in a massive stone hearth while sipping hot cocoa and enjoying the crackling fire. In the warmer months, open the windows to invite the sounds of nature and indulge in birdwatching or immerse yourself in one of the specially curated books provided.

As an off-grid property, The Hideout utilizes an electricity generator, focusing on minimizing its carbon footprint. The generator powers the water pump, enabling you to enjoy hot showers, clean dishes, and a functioning toilet. Please note that generator use is limited to 5 hours per day. The simple push of a button from inside the cabin activates the generator, ensuring easy access.

To truly embrace the outdoor experience, venture to the outdoor fire pit located just a short stroll from the cabin. Roast s'mores under the starry night sky and create lasting memories with your loved ones. You can purchase bundles of wood before your stay.

The owners take great care to ensure your safety and maintain the cleanliness of the cabin. All surfaces are thoroughly sprayed with a disinfectant solution, and necessary precautions are taken to provide a safe environment for your stay.

We love dogs and know how hard it is to find a place that allows them to come on vacation with you! Potty-trained, well-behaved dogs of any size are welcome! Dogs cannot be left in the cabin unattended and are not allowed on the furniture. If you want to leave your pet in the cabin while you're out exploring, you may do so if they are in a crate.

VERY IMPORTANT TO READ BEFORE YOU BOOK:

We will leave you very clear directions on operating the cabin. We also send multiple videos before checking in to watch before arrival.

The cabin is located 2 miles off a paved road. Our road is maintained and plowed by local residents. During the winter months, it will sometimes be snow-packed, icy, slick, or unplowed. During warm months the dirt and sand road could be rocky, soupy, hard-packed, or all of these simultaneously. There may be small water crossings, and there could be loose sand or mud. All types of cars can make it to the cabin, but before booking, please consider whether you are concerned about the abilities of your car or your driving abilities on varying terrain. We can provide up-to-date road conditions before your trip if you have any concerns.

The cabin is off-grid, and the generator uses gasoline to make electricity for the water pump. There will be enough fuel to provide you with a reasonable amount of electricity to use during your stay (about 5 hours per day). The generator is only needed to power the water pump (showers/dishes/toilet). The lights, refrigerator, stove, and water heater are all powered by propane. Bring along lanterns, headlights, or flashlights to help you navigate at night. Lighters are also a good item to have in your pocket for lighting the lights. If you need to have any device that runs off electricity through the night or for long periods of time, you’ll need to bring a battery-powered solution or reach out to discuss your situation before booking.

The water comes from a drilled well and goes through a water softener system. The system has a pressure tank that is filled, so when the generator is not on, you will still have water to wash your hands, do a few dishes, and flush the potty a couple of times. You'll want to turn the generator on before jumping in the shower.

We do not have wifi. You’ll be able to unplug here, truly. Cell service is generally not available in the area. You will be able to call any number that is in the 906 area code from the landline, and you will be able to receive calls from anywhere.

All well-behaved dogs are welcome! Please help us stay dog friendly by cleaning up after your pet around the cabin.

Dogs may be off-leash if you can maintain control over your dog. This is a remote wilderness area with wild animals, and the safety of your dog and our wildlife friends is important.

Dogs may not be left inside unattended and are not allowed on the furniture. If you want to leave your pet in the cabin while you're out exploring, you may do so if they are in a crate.

The wood stove is only used by people who know how wood stoves work. No liquid flammables or trash are ever to be used in a wood stove. We provide plenty of wood for your stay. Summer is typically way too hot for a wood-burning fire inside.

Campfires are permitted as long as they are properly monitored and extinguished. Clean up your trash around the fire pit before you leave. Do NOT use cabin firewood for a campfire.

This cabin does have one nearby neighbor. Out of respect for them, please limit outdoor noise after 10 pm. No loud music is to be played outside.

Please clean all kitchen items that you use and return them to their place.

No smoking is allowed inside the cabin. A $500 smoke clean-up fee will be charged.

At the end of your stay, please put all linens and towels in the laundry bin and return all items to their original locations.

There have been sightings of coyotes, cougars, bears, turkeys, eagles, hawks, deer, horses, turtles, raccoons, squirrels, mice, and bugs of all types here...please plan accordingly and do not leave food out, or they will come to visit you.

Please only flush toilet paper and natural waste down the toilet. The system is not made to handle feminine products or trash of any type, not even flushable wipes. All food and coffee grounds should be put in the trash, and no food or grease should be put down the drains.

The owners are not responsible for any accidents, injuries, or illness that occurs while on the premises or its facilities. We are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest. By accepting this reservation, it is agreed that all guests are expressly assuming the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises or others they invite to use it.

Peace and quiet
The cabin is very clean and cozy. Everything in place that we could have wanted. We loved escaping to this quiet environment. Plenty of trails to explore on the expansive property and the quiet roads. During our stay (on Labor Day) we had perfect weather and no bugs! Our pups enjoyed running around the property. For being off grid it truly lends itself to comfort and convenience. We are so glad we found it and were able to stay here. Megan was incredibly helpful and quickly answered any questions we had.

Wonderful Retreat
My husband and I had a fantastic stay and this quaint little cabin in the woods. The cabin itself is incredibly clean and well equipped. While I was initially concerned about the lack of electricity, being able to use the generator for five hours per day provided sufficient hot water and electricity when needed. I went for a five mile run and felt safe. I highly recommend this location.

Beautiful cabin in the woods with everything you would need except use a solar powered fan and some of the screens fixed so you could leave the windows open. We enjoy our stay, but it happened to be extremely hot the The days we worked and the lack of communication about the generator use made us feel like we needed to not use it accordingly so we were unable to power the fan to cool off the cabin. There were five very large piles of dog poop right in the yard next to the walkway to get in and out of the cars that made it difficult for kids to explore outside and caring in and out our luggage. Would’ve been nice if The people before us who brought their dog cleaned up their dogs poop. Made it difficult to use the outdoor space not knowing if we’re gonna step on a land mine. Not the owners fault but might want to put that as a reminder to dog owners. I tried cleaning it up for myself just to prevent any accidents, but it was so disgusting and huge that I decided against that option. Don’t forget that you’re in the middle of the woods in the upper peninsula and there are so many mosquitoes that enjoying the campfire was impossible… The cabin is beautifully decorated had everything we needed and was perfect. Stay in the middle of the woods.

So Remote - It Truly is an Oasis
It was so lovely to escape to the forest for a second time this year. The cabin was just the same as it was, and we did not have any issues. Sheri, the local point of contact, was attentive and respectful of our privacy. We stayed for two weeks, and she worked with us to pick up trash and refuel the generator. The dogs had a wonderful time. Thanks, Megan, for making your oasis available!

Loved this Cabin! Caretaking could use improvement.
We loved this cabin, is a beautiful property. The setting is serene and idyllic, the forest is amazing. The caretaking needs some improvement. Active wasp nest on the porch by the front door, no problem, a trip to the general store for a can of wasp spray. Mouse poop on the counters and tables each morning, trail mix bags chewed into. Understandable, it's the woods, don't leave food out. Dead mouse found in a trap, not ideal to leave set traps or not to have disposed of before guests. Found this under the couch on our last day. Smell of propane constant while all appliances off, not sure why, became slightly nauseating over the days. Mantles on 3 of 5 lights broken or blackened, with instructions not to use broken or blackened mantles. Left us lacking crucial lighting, we used our head lamps at night. Other small caretaking/cleaning issues not worth mentioning, all in all a super beautiful place, but if I'm paying $250+ per night, these things aren't very acceptable.

Visiting the UP with our dog
Cabin is just as described. Great communication with directions and a video describing how to use everything in the home. The propane lights fridge and stove worked great. Bugs were terrible but obviously not controllable by owner. Minor other little issues but owner was very communicative and cooperative. Was a pretty good drive to most major attractions in the area but obviously remote make sure you have a four wheel drive or at least all wheel drive for this one.

Quiet, clean, and comfortable
We stayed at the cabin over the 4th of July weekend. Was looking for a secluded, quiet, comfortable off the grid place to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. This was the PERFECT cabin for it. Set back in a quiet secluded area within a national forest, star gazing, campfire, BBQ, you name it it has it! Internet, computer, TV it does not! Just how we wanted it. The cabin was amazingly clean, free of bugs and critters, generator gave us just enough electricity to not be inconvenienced, and the amenities from the sheets, towels, utensils, bug deterrent, flashlights, etc. we’re carefully thought out to make it a great experience! I am not one of those “hardcore, Extreme” outdoors person, but was able to enjoy comfortable and relaxed! Thanks Meghan! Will definitely be back if we get the chance!

The cabin is very remote which is nice and the generator worked well. We visited at the end of June though and the bugs were very hard to deal with it. It was unenjoyable to be outside even with bug spray. The cabin was also not as close to pictured rocks as we thought it would be, it took us about an hour to get there. Overall it was a good experience but would have been better to visit in the fall or winter I believe.

Perfectly isolated
Personally loved the place. Very secluded, very quiet. Was worried the Off-the Grid aspect would cause issues, but it didn't. Was actually quite enjoyable having that level of quiet. Only complaint was we accidentally set off the Carbon Monoxide alarm our first night because we tried running the heater. Apparently that's a bad idea. Not an issue, though, as we could just use the fireplace instead. The place Does smell like propane, but that's kind of unavoidable, so I don't consider it a negative, just something to be aware of. Will probably book again another year.

Loved the property! Was a little nervous of being so remote but it was obvious the cabin is loved and cleaned. I was a little surprised that the nightly was 249 but our total cost was 502. No reflection on property but the prices on VRBO can be misleading. I obviously did not pay close enough attention. So for price, we paid too much but cabin was nice.

The Perfect Unplugged Getaway
We couldn’t have had a better experience at Hiawatha Hideaway! We were immediately drawn in by the photos, thoroughness of the listing, and the reviews - the real life experience was everything and more! My husband and I brought our 8yo and 2yo for a long weekend and as soon as we arrived we felt how special the cabin was. From the drive in, exploring the nighttime wildlife (frogs and snails), campfires, morning Chess games at the dining table, coffee, and the QUIET, we loved everything about our stay. The cabin is very clean with every needed amenity and detailed instructions for how to use the propane fixtures and generator. There were little touches that made it obvious how much the owner loves the property and sharing it with all of us. We were able to make the easy drive to Munising for a day at Pictured Rocks, a day rock hunting at the mouth of the Two Hearted River and Muskallonge, and another day in Grand Marais, and just as much looked forward to coming back and had some of the most relaxing evenings/nights we’ve ever had. Don’t miss the Midway General Store - we ate breakfast/brunch there twice (local pasties and homemade breakfast burritos). We can’t wait to come back and explore more right around the cabin - there are three nearby lakes. We weren’t really sure where we could access and just ran out of time. You’d be lucky to stay here!

My girlfriend and I absolutely loved our stay here. It a relaxing place off the beaten path with obvious care put in to make you at home. We loved being able to go off the grid and get away from all the distractions, while still being able to sleep in a nice bed, cook your own meals, and play games. And it was very comfortable after long hikes at Pictured Rocks. We will for sure try and book here again next time we come here to hike!
