We arrived late and property advised that due to water boiler leak the room heating was down. They would put a space heater in the room and leave it unlocked. When we arrived the heater must have tripped the circuit breaker because it was off as were most of the plugs in the room and lights in bedroom, closet, bathroom and lamp. No one returned calls or texts. We stayed in dark room and used our phone flashlights for bathroom, shaving, showering and getting dressed. I don’t think it’s overly safe to leave a room open with an unattended heater, or not have any way to reach the property or front desk after 10PM in case there is a serious issue.
In the morning manager / owner was nice and certainly polite but not too worried about going to see the issues or finding a way to remedy the inconveniences.

Dear Eliza,It is really unfortunate that the ac outlets on one side of the room was not working because the circuit breaker for that side had tripped. Fortunately, there was still power on the other side and you were able to use the lamp there. As soon as you reported the issue we immediately rectified the situation by flipping the circuit breaker back on. There were no further power failures after that, so we do not know what happened to activate the circuit breaker. We are honored to have been able to provide you with a safe, clean and comfortable room for your stay and we thank you for your patronage. PS:(We did not receive a call from you on the office phone that night, but we did see the text message the next day).

The property is owned by a nice family who are very friendly and helpful with information about the area.

The owners were very friendly and the motel was a wonderful mom and pop place! Much better than any of the big chains. I loved the fact that it was older but well cared for. The beds were very comfortable, although they could do with some new pillows.

If you're ever in the Alpena, Michigan area, consider the Big Bear Lodge. The motel is seventy years old, but very well maintained. Clean, quaint, and the owners are all you could ask for, kind and informative! In the lobby there are even paintings made by her! A great experience! The rooms are clean, and the beds are comfy! You're definitely going to want to make reservations as with anyplace that shines in what they do, you don't want to be taking chances that they're full up!

We enjoyed the room. It was clean and provided all our needs. We had planned to stay 3 nights but decided to move on. The owner was very nice about getting with Hotels.com to get my refund for the other two days. It was much appreciated.
