I usually never write reviews for the hotels I stay in.
But my stay at Son River House in Phong Nha was easily the highlight of my trip to Vietnam.
1. It is located just outside the village, so it's more quiet and private than the other hotels that are all cramped up together in Phong Nha. Situated on the shore of the Song River, featuring a breathtaking view of two limestone peaks, a cemetary and a church tower in the distance.
2. The owners are incredibly helpful, accomodating and friendly. When we got there on the first night, they even invited us to their house for Tet, and we drank and sang karaoke with them, which was truly an unforgettable moment. The homestay is manned by a family of devoted, light-hearted people, who make you feel at home. Lucy the owner, is paricularly kind and very dedicated. She speaks english.
3. The food is good, they offer tours and bikes. The homestay is very well decorated, the rooms are clean/come with AC, showers with hot water... they even burned incense before we came into the room to make it smell good. It is possible to pay with credit card.
Son River House is by far the best hotel in the Phong Nha area. It surpasses expectations and I will absolutely return there for another stay. Thanks to the staff and to Lucy!

Publié le 11 mars 2024 sur HotelsDO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE GOOD REVIEWS: The Son River House is without question the worst place I’ve stayed. There is no staff on site besides a confused old Vietnamese man that sits in the courtyard sometimes. I tried to check in 3 times and nobody was there. Ended up waiting 2 hours to check in.
In my “suite” was 3 beds, 2 of which had dirty sheets and pillows. The bathroom didn’t work. Shower head only had a few “holes” that sprayed water. Toilet was broke and had previous waste in it.
I booked a new place after one day staying there and when I got to a new place and opened my suitcase (which was open at Son River House) 2 cockroaches flew out that must of got stuck in the bag at some point.
I understand that you can’t expect much out of a $20 hotel but it was competitively priced compared to other options and have over 9.0 rating on Expedia. This home stay isn’t worth being paid to stay in let only paying for it.
