The perfect base camp for a hunting trip (or just a perfect place to unplug and unwind)

Publié le 6 déc. 2021 sur HomeAway
Our stay at The Land was very enjoyable. We stayed in the treehouse with our kids (5 years old and 18 months) and Grandma and Grandpa and used it as our base of operations for my wife’s elk hunt. The place has a great layout inside and the front porch and treehouse made for a the perfect outdoor play area for the kids. The lack of city lights and the front deck made for some beautiful views of the stars and planets through the spotting scope at night. It was located perfectly for hunting and we only had a short drive to our hunting spots each day. The amenities were as advertised and the lack of cell service makes for a good way to unplug from the normal day to day. The Wi-Fi was solid and allowed us to review maps at night and make our plans for the next day without issue. Contact with the owners was easy (we needed to extend our stay by one day) and during our discussion Jonathan asked if we needed anything and offered to drop additional firewood off at our place. He was very accommodating and friendly when we met him. This is a very pretty location and one we are planning to check into again, especially if we need a good base camp for a hunt in the area.

Horror Movie Vibes

I don’t think I can remember a more unpleasant vacation experience in my entire life. The listing was very deceptive (several amenities outlined in the listing were missing from the property, the house was 100 feet away from 2 other guest houses even though the listing said that the homes were specially distanced for privacy). They also failed to mention that it was bear season and that there were several bears spotted on the property. We paid for a 2 night stay, and the electricity went out the first night. It also took us about an hour to lock all of the doors because they gave such poor instructions. The house is very hot without the fans, so not being able to use them made it extremely difficult to sleep. The electricity came back on in the morning for a couple of hours, but then it went out again. There is no cellular service out at the house, so WiFi was the only way to communicate with the owner. While we still had some electricity in the morning, I tried contacting the owner to ask why we didn’t have a key (I didn’t feel comfortable going out and leaving all of our belongings behind). However, I couldn’t reach the owner because the WiFi wouldn’t work at all. I had to drive very far from the house to try and get a signal on my phone, but I had no success. Previously, the owner sent an email out saying that if we couldn’t reach them, we could find them at the main house (which they never specified which one was the “main” house). So I went to each house with no response. The owner has a plethora of cameras on the property, so it felt like they were just watching me wander around. After trying unsuccessfully to find anyone after quite a while, I gave up and went back to the sweltering hot house. When I got back, I discovered that the water stopped working. I eventually found the breaker in a very creepy basement on the side of the house. I reset it several times but still no electricity. We just sat around in the hot house waiting for the electricity to come back for a couple of hours until I finally decided to leave. We heard someone (not in our family) close the door to the basement - electricity eventually came back on shortly after hearing the door. Contacted owner once we got reception and they said they didn’t have any electricity issues (which proves they were just watching me on their cameras). Not one apology from the owner. I asked for a refund and they just told me to deal with Vrbo. Please stay away from this property.

Dear Salim, I’m sorry that you had a bad experience while on The Land. I’m happy to address your concerns specifically. That being said, this review is slanderous and fraudulent. We wholeheartedly reject the advertising of fictitious amenities. Would you be able to list exactly what amenities you were unable to find? We provide a map of the property in the home manual which is located in the home on the dining table. This map would guide you to all the amenities. The fact that we are in bear season is mentioned, once again, in the home manual that is on the dining table in the home. I would also recommend that you take the time to explore what wildlife lives in the area before traveling. As also evident from the listing we live VERY closely to nature and in a rural setting. This is precisely why guests choose to come here. Again, we would very openly suggest that those who do not want to see wildlife not visit our property as we are a sanctuary for a plethora of wildlife (as detailed in our listing). In regards to the electricity, we also mention in the home manual that the electricity goes out occasionally. Again this is common in rural areas in New Mexico. In regard to the key, you received a clear message from VRBO telling you where the key was located (in the lockbox as per standard practice). When you called me (we spoke 3 times on the phone), I explained and walked your wife to the main entrance right next to the kitchen where the lockbox is located. I'm not sure why you choose to not use the key and why you believe that the lockbox being placed next to the kitchen door was not sufficiently accessible. Correct, the wifi as is absolutely normal will go out if the electricity goes out. There was no ill intent by the owner to not be contactable. Once again the Main Home is illustrated in the map on the home manual that is located on the dining room table. I'm sorry you chose to not use it. I am not sure when you went to all the homes but we can not guarantee to be home 24/7, I think that is understandable. And as you did you called us 3 different times and also sent us various messages. Therefore it is fair to say that you were in frequent contact with us. Additionally, we ask all guests (again in the home manual) to not visit other guests' homes. In regard to the water as is common in rural properties all of our homes are connected to wells which are run with electrical pumps. The water will go out when the electricity goes out. I'm sorry that you found the basement creepy, please note it is not listed as part of the rental property there are also off-limits to guests. The last point in regards to our security cameras is fraudulent. We have multiple security cameras throughout the property for the security of ourselves and our guests. Our property is very rural and isolated which those who come to visit love, nonetheless, security and safety are our priority and we have security cameras which honestly most American homes do. This is not used to watch anyone as I imagine you can imagine we have many other things to do with our time. The security cameras are for security. I find your comment about us watching you very confusing as we do not have ANY cameras in the homes. I have proof on both text message and Vrbo that we said we are sorry you had a bad experience please reach out to VRBo’s resolution center. It is common practice for guests to resolve issues via the platform through which they booked. That is the reason that the platform is in place. We love sharing our sacred space with those who share our values and love for nature. The Land is a sanctuary. It is rural and isolated, we prioritize unlimited stargazing and the freshest of air, as the majority of guests we attract. That being said, rural New Mexico is not for everyone and we understand that.
