I really want to love the Birchwood! I don’t need extravagance just a clean place to sleep! So I keep this in mind when I look at budget friendly hotels. They really have potential! It looks like they started doing some updating. Painted the walls updated flooring. The bed was nice, newer, with clean linen and comfortable. The bathroom looked like it was clean. These are the pros. Now the cons: First of all there is never staff in the office. Check in is finding doors keys in a mailbox. No one answers either of the numbers written on a piece of paper on the door. There was another guest who sat in her car an hour waiting for someone. We had to tell her to look in the mailbox for a key. This was after 9pm and she was alone. She tried calling phone numbers as well. Husband brought fishing gear and we tried to call the number to locate the fishing pier advertised. Never answered. Went to the dock to fish. Lastly the rooms just need finishing touches and proper cleaning. Tub and shower were clean but the caulk was missing and that space made the shower look dirty. The floor wasn’t updated and needed a good scrub it was dirty. The wall outside of the tub needs drywall repair and paint. All really easy cosmetic fixes. And please get your housekeeper a vacuum. Our floors were not vacuumed when we got there and they were visibly dirty. It’s really a great location in such an awesome town. Would love to see the hotel brought up to its potential.

Clean, comfortable, and peaceful stay.

We enjoyed our late September 2024, 2 night, 3 day stay at Birchwood. The room with amenities was slightly different, but substantially similar to the photos. The bathroom, linens, furniture were very clean and comfortable. The flooring is light brown color and looked clean and nice. We didn't notice that it wasn't well cleaned until we were walking around in our bare feet. We had quiet, peaceful and good nights sleep there. We didn't have anyone in the rooms beside us. Due to the weather we didn't try the pool, but it looked cleaned and well maintained. There are some nice cookout grills and picnic areas which we didn't use. Beautiful rose bushes skirt the parking lot. It's not a luxury motel, but nice, comfortable and clean. We couldn't always contact management. The office was sometimes closed and phone not answered during posted open times. This was our first time to Chincoteague Island. We were really taken by its quaintness. Birchwood Inn is located just on the other side of the street from the Chincoteague Bay waterfront properties, so we were able to enjoy the view of the water. It is right beside the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department's fair ground, which was closed during our stay. One caveat is "The Causeway", Chincoteague Road, from the mainland to the island lays only 1 foot or so above the water. Heavy rains or turbulent weather may cause the road to be closed at short notice blocking entrance and exit to the island. I recommend Birchwood Inn.

Despite our late arrival, the staff was exceptionally communicative and responsive. They arranged to leave our keys outside the office and provided clear instructions over the phone on how to check in. The office was also closed at checkout, but the same helpful staff member guided us through the process by phone. The motel offered great value for the price, though we were surprised by the low occupancy—fewer than five cars in the parking lot on a Saturday night. We had expected a bit more activity, but it was unusually quiet. Not sure why, but it made for a peaceful stay.

Great location however property was dated, rooms has an unpleasant odor, wash clothes and towels had stains, carpet was extremely dirty. With some talc this place could be wonderful!

New smoke detector still has bubble wrap covering it, how would it work? Dead flies on walls and cabinets from occupants swatting them. A/C filter doesn’t look like it’s been cleaned in years. Beds and linens ok. Never seen any staff.

Place needs some love

I don't mind older motels and in fact really enjoy a nice old school vibe as long as they are clean and the bed is comfy and this was. But it did seem like this place was a bit beyond the dated furniture. The kitchenette was really not usable. No pots, pans or utensils were provided and the metal bases under the electric burners on the oven were rusted (one was completely missing). The cosmetic issues with the older appliances were touched up with a different color of paint, giving it a vibe of custodian dealing with lewd graffiti on a middle school locker. The gate to the pool was in need of repair. There were just a number of issues like that that made it feel a bit depressing and rundown vs. just in need of a makeover. Location was great so spent most of the time out of the room anyway.
