So pleased Carolyn had a great stay and liked the cottage. I have checked and we do specify that there are no bathrooms upstairs, she must have missed that when reading the details about the accommodation.

Second time
Publié le 26 sept. 2024 sur HomeAwayAs this was the second time, first was 2 years ago, it felt alittle need to TLC. Felt tired needing a lick of paint and maybe change some of the ornaments that equally looked tired now. Overall it serviced its purpose seeing that beautiful view again and making me realise how much I love West Meresa.
Overall it was

Whilst this review is very disappointing, I am not totally surprised and was anxious before reading it. From the outset, when she initially booked her return stay, Sandra made it clear she was going to be comparing it to her first. Her message simply said - "Booking again for a second time - I do hope we are not disappointed!!" - with exclamation marks. I have to say this read as very threatening, so I was on my guard during her stay.
Sandra sent me a personal message after check out with her concerns about some rubbish that had been left behind as she said she didn't want to write it in a review. However she did not raise any of these concerns to me privately, instead she chose to write all this in a public review.
In response, I will accept that after two very busy seasons we have not had time to access the cottage with enough time to do a little touch up painting. With having white walls in the lounge and a wood burner they do need a refresh now and then, and this is now due. However, I do not agree that we should have to change ornaments every year. This is not only highly wasteful and contrary to our personal beliefs, it also goes against the fact that any ornaments at the cottage are things we have gathered over the years and treasure. They are not cheap things bought from Next that are replaced with each year's fashions. This is not a Holiday Let decorated for this specific purpose, but our Second Home that we are sharing with our guests.

Lovely cottage in a great location!
Publié le 16 sept. 2024 sur HomeAwayReally enjoyed our stay in this lovely quirky cottage. Best equipped kitchen of any cottage I’ve ever stayed in - loved the welcome goodies too. Secure garden was perfect for the dogs to run around, and also for us to admire the views, especially as we had good weather. I drew the short straw and had the upstairs room - as described, the stairs are very narrow and steep, so probably not suitable for six footers! All in all a really lovely cottage in a great location.

That's so lovely of Gill to comment on the well equipped kitchen. I always try to ensure it has everything you would need in a fully functioning kitchen, so thanks for noticing.
So pleased to hear they had good weather and could enjoy the outside space, but do be sure to return in the winter and have some cosy evenings inside beside the woodburner. It's such a cosy space in the midst of winter.

Mersea Mick
Publié le 20 août 2024 sur HomeAwayDidn’t know what to expect. Didn’t realise that we had to cross a causeway until we received the tide times via email. However it was not a problem. The cottage was quirky and only for short people…….ha ha ha
The stay was lovely and village very nice, friendly people.

Beautiful cottage in a lovely location
Publié le 26 juill. 2024 sur HomeAwayThis is a property of such individuality and charm... certainly not for those who want a hot-tub and a 60" television, but a treat for anyone who loves the sense of a home that has been restored with great affection and attention to detail. The upper storey, sitting room and stairs are just as they were when the building was constructed, so there is definitely a need for the tall to watch their heads! Downstairs is a good-sized double bedroom with French doors onto the garden, and a very comfortable bed. There is a WC off the room, and a separate shower. A family bathroom on the ground floor also has a bath/shower. The sitting room is beautiful, and down a step is a kitchen which looks out over the estuary. We only had three days here, but enjoyed the sound of waders feeding on the river at low tide, and the lovely view. Both my husband and his grandson enjoyed playing the piano. Unfortunately, the neighbour was having some work done on his home, but was very apologetic about any noise/ issues. Mersea Island is quiet and has not been commercialised ...although there are some splendid places to eat fresh seafood ( The Duke was our favourite). There is a village centre with a Michelin starred restaurant, and a friendly community. There are plenty of places to purchase food and some enjoyable walks in East Mersea. A delight...

Oh Linda, you are our ideal guests. To hear that you have understood completely what we hoped to achieve with our "light touch" approach to reviving Crabtree Cottage. I haven't said renovate as that usually entails ripping everything out and starting again, instead we have worked with what we have and tried to bring it up to date sympathetically.
Huge apologies for next door's work (we were not advised in advance, sadly) but I hope it didn't spoil your stay too much?
Reviews like this are so helpful to future guests deciding where to stay - so many thanks again Linda. 🙏

Lovely cottage with a beautiful view
Publié le 21 juill. 2024 sur HomeAwaySunsets from the back garden looking over the water, can’t be beat. The cottage was lovely, private and historic. Very attentive host. A great home to stay in on Mersea Island.

Mersea revisited.
Publié le 16 juill. 2024 sur HomeAwayA really lovely little cottage in an idyllic location tucked away close to the creeks and marsh, quiet and ideal for walking our Working Cocker Spaniel with a dog proof garden he was very happy. Also coast, beach and village amenities all within walking distance and the island can still be circumnavigated on foot.
Can highly recommend the now famous Company Shed, Sea Food at Dawn, and The Coast Inn for seafood and Mersea Barns out at East Mersea for breakfast etc, and fab homewear shop, also the newly revamped White Hart Inn in the centre of the village, now very smart with a Michelin Star, and the excellent Lotus Kitchen Chinese Take Away, still there after many years have passed!
Also a must would be a boat trip around the creeks with the Lady Grace.
Mersea had not lost its magic from memories of being a true ‘Mersea Native’ born and brought up on the island, much had changed but many parts still very much as remembered.
Many thanks Vanessa.

This review makes me so happy Elizabeth, even more so as you used to live on Mersea many years ago. To hear that you still love this special place and that your stay at Crabtree Cottage lived up to expectation is such a joy. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Lots of postive things about property but very low ceilings strairs up to bedrooms very difficult
Publié le 16 mai 2024 sur HomeAwayNice property, good parking& good location for all amenities. Just low ceilings & staircase very difficult as low & steep around a corner & have to hold a rope. We didnt bring anything upstairs as worried to how to bring it down. I normally have tea in bed but this couldn't happen as it wouldn't have been safe so had to had up!! Garden fab & big. Wasn't clear all bathrooms downstairs. Wasn't as clean i would expect. Did enjoy but won't stay again

This is very disappointing since the details about the awkward staircase, the low ceilings and the position of both bathrooms (downstairs) is clearly shown in the listing. It is also mentioned often in reviews, so I am not sure Julia thoroughly researched before booking. So to be be marked down in her review because of this, seems not very fair.
I accept and have said many times, this is a quirky cottage that is almost 600 years old and is Grade II listed so making certain changes is just not possible (upstairs bathrooms for example). The property is not really suitable for people with mobility issues. Julia mentioned bringing a Guide Dog, so I assume someone in her party has certain requirements, but she did not ask me about the cottage's suitability before booking. If I had been asked in advance I would have said Crabtree Cottage would not be suitable in those circumstances.

Beside the sea at Mersea
Publié le 11 avr. 2024 sur HomeAwayThe listing is very accurate, and the cottage is even nicer in real life than the photos suggest. It's a perfect stay if you like older, quirky properties and don't mind wonky floors and low ceilings - my husband is 6'2" but he managed to duck his head and had no problems! The cottage is very well equipped, especially in the kitchen, and we made good use of the piano as well. The outdoor area is quiet and full of birds - a perfect, peaceful getaway. We slept extremely well in the very comfy downstairs bedroom and enjoyed cosy evenings in by the fire. There are plenty of places to eat and buy essentials nearby and lovely walks along the beach. If you like to keep busy with trips to local attractions, you'll need to get in your car, but there is plenty within easy reach if you wan this. We were happy to largely stay put and relax!

So pleased to hear Karen and her husband enjoyed their stay so much at Crabtree Cottage. She describes it perfectly, I couldn't have put it better myself.
There are occasional buses to other attractions, but granted Mersea is an island and if you want to move about a bit more, then a car is a good idea for your trip. However there's plenty to do on and around the Island too.
Karen is welcome back any time.
