Freezing in winter
The house is massive, and would be great for families to stay in the summer. It's been renovated by the owner, who was next door renovating a second house during our stay.
Derby Digs lacks character and warmth, painted stark white, decorated with cheap looking prints on the walls and single light bulbs in the fixtures on the high ceilings. There are no lamps, so if you're sitting around chatting in the evenings you'll be under the full fluro lights.
Our dissatisfaction was with the lack of heating. There are no electric blankets or heaters, only the wood fire. Thankfully, wood was kindly provided. The first night i slept on the lounge in front of the fire, as temperatures were freezing and the bedrooms were like ice boxes. I spoke with the owner who said there were heaters in the closet (which is locked to guests), and he said instructions on where to find heaters was in the info booklet on the kitchen table (which there were not). When we arrived back on day 2, the owner had produced 1 heater in 1 bedroom, and had the fire going. The magical closet of heaters was still locked.
Unfortunately my friends staying in the other rooms suffered a night of freezing temperatures.
The kitchen is full of ants. The coffee pod machine that is mentioned as a selling point in the description was full of dirty empty pods and growing mould. There is no long life milk to go with it, byo.
There is no wifi, (no 3G or 4G internet either) no optus phone reception, no landline.
