Wanted to like it … but just bad

We booked a lake view room for our anniversary, but received a room with a view of the parking lot instead. We were handed a handwritten note for “2 free nights” on a future trip (yes, I have a bridge to sell you) but we weren’t refunded the difference in price for the room we paid for versus what we got. Also: Be aware that the hours of various services stated on the hotel website, Hotels.com and the welcome email are not accurate. All said checkin was open until 9 pm; I got a call at 6:40 pm saying we had 40 minutes before the front desk closed. Breakfast was closed down (and chained off!) well before the stated 10 am cutoff, and the hotel issues a parking pass to every room but does not have spaces for them all, so good luck. This hotel looks nice enough from the street and the location is amazing, but the hotel interior is in dire need of maintenance. Peeling wallpaper, inadequate corridor lighting and some sort of hole in the ceiling (major service issues aside) are enough to steer away. Sad, I usually like a quirky, classic old hotel/motel, but I won’t be back to this one.

As we stated when you checked in, the staff member responsible for the mix up was held accountable. It was unfortunate that all of our lake side rooms were sold out for the dates of your stay. You should have been refunded the difference in price, so I will handle that immediately. Desk staff are required to call all guests by 7 pm to check arrival times and go through the late check in process should you be arriving after 9 pm. We do this so that we aren't calling our late arrival guests at the last minute. It was NOT that the desk was closing at 7. Breakfast was not closed prior to 10 am, as confirmed by our security cameras. As for parking, we have several street parking spots in addition to the parking lot.

Great location right next to the lake

Our room was clean and comfortable. No problems with the room. The outdoor patio area had a fantastic view of the lake. The lake itself was only 20 feet from the patio. The location was perfect for Grand Marais. Close to everything. With that said, the hotel is older (we knew that before we stayed) and could use some updating. The breakfast was simple but sufficient. I am not sure if I would stay again but I am completely satisfied with my 2 night stay this time.

Tried calling and emailing property before hand and no one responded. No one at front desk. Rang the bell three times and no one showed up. The mattress sunk. The electric outlets didnt work in the bathroom and closet. The water backed up in the tub. The plumbing and rooms need to be renovated. The location was good.

You arrived and hour and 20 minutes before for check in time. My front desk agent was away from the desk in order to perform quality checks on clean rooms. She was back with you as soon as she was aware that you had arrived. The mattress in the room you were assigned is new. Perhaps it was too plush for your liking? The electrical issue was addressed during your stay.

Long past dated. Dirty carpet/drapes/tile and grout in bathroom. Unfriendly, disinterested staff. Windows open when arrived allowing numerous mosquitos in room. Leaks in roof and ceiling in hallways. Very worn bedding and towels. Nice location but extremely disappointing in all other areas.

If you could identify the staff member who treated you poorly, that would be most helpful. Generally, my staff are the best part of our hotel. You visited during a time when we were receiving unprecedented amounts of rain, which resulted in a leak on our roof and flooding in much of the area. We apologize for mother nature's fury. Unfortunately, the weather is beyond our control.

The room was in need of an update, but that didn’t even matter because the location of the property was The Best.

Had an absolutely wonderful stay loved the 1950s decor and the steel vault doors on bathroom and closet doors are awesome I loved having the windows open and natural air conditioning blowing in from lake Superior was a real treat so much better than air conditioning the staff here is super friendly and nice and hard-working as well and you get a lovely wake up call from the seagulls in the morning so no need to set an alarm clock. We will certainly be back here it's one of the nicest places I've ever stayed and I love the fact that they're maintaining the original decor keep up the good work.

Hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly! Great location and beautiful lake views. Hotel definitely needs a some work.
